I'm not trying to pick here, but this level of self awareness generally doesn't accompany a real asshole..

Have you considered that being an asshole is a changable quality? Awareness is probably the hardest part.

No it definitely can. But generally the assholishness comes more from being uncompromising in what you want. Which is a perfectly valid way to live, but harder for maintaining relationships.
