My wife watched the bodycam of this and I saw some of it. The mother’s cries are harrowing. If I remember rightly she was in treatment for the trauma from the first child’s death and it was her therapist that suggested to allow the grandma to look after the younger child. I don’t know how I’d be able to live after that. Your own mother killing both kids, your therapist pushing you to allow her access to the second one. Fuck that.
My cousin died young and I remember waiting in the lobby of the funeral home before they let all of us family in. The funeral director told us that we could go in to see my cousin in the open casket before the wake started.
I will NEVER ever forget my aunt turning to my grandma (her mom) and yelling out “I don’t want to do this mom” as she broke down in tears and collapsed into her mothers arms. It was heartbreaking and something that came from her soul. Hard to describe that kind of pain. We all lost it crying of course. No parent should ever have to bury their child. As a dad now too, it hurts even more to imagine.
When I told my mom I had slit my wrists and was in the hospital she was calmed in the phone but after I came back I learned that after the call she wailed so hard that his coworkers in the first floor (she was in the second in her office) heard her and found her crying in the floor.
I was very very close to doing the same a long time ago but didn't follow through because as I was sitting there about to, I happened to get a notification that my mom was online on skype and on an impulse I called her instead. She was totally calm on the phone, immediately said she was booking flights to come to me (I was in college a continent away).
When she got there she was also acting normal and cheerful and as we were packing up my dorm room so I could go home on medical leave, she asked me to take some boxes down to the recycling. I will never ever forget getting back to the room after dealing with the boxes and seeing her sitting on my bed just absolutely sobbing. She'd held it together to be strong for me, but the second she had a moment alone she absolutely fell apart.
(The story ends happily this was like 12 years ago, I'm doing well now and so is my mom)
I'll never forget the sound my mother made when she found my brother dead. We were a thousand miles apart and on the phone but it is still forever burned into my memory.
I was in the hospital one night in college and a woman was brought in screaming and sobbing. It was the most gut wrenching sound; I could immediately tell it was emotionally fueled, not from physical pain or something.
A few hours later some nurses were talking at the nurses station about her right outside my room. Apparently, a couple years prior, she had her first ever seizure while driving and crashed, and her twin girls were in the back and did not survive. And on this night, she had received news that her surviving child had accidentally drowned while staying at the child's father's house.
I will never be able to get the sound of that woman's cries out of my head. It was absolutely heartbreaking.
