i really hope i will live to see an age of AI being used to make actual video game AI better. imagine strategy games where the computer does not play with cheats and with basic scripted logic but using actual AI.

AI in video games is dumb by design not due to technical constraints so you have simple rules to play around

Bro has never played a Paradox Grand Strategy Game. The AI in those games is generally terrible because the systems are so complex.

Yes that’s the point. It’s so complex that without forcing the AI into rigid defined meta choices the AI sucks at the game. They could make it so the AI always chooses the meta option when deciding things but that isn’t fun and the whole point is that sometimes the Ai will do something wild and unexpected.

Or Civilization

Yea. Ai so bad that the only way to give the Ai a fighting chance is to just give them boost to their empires. they get fucking double resource production, naval cap and -40% ship upkeep on grand admiral.

Nah man. In the Civilization games for example, the AI is bad at lower difficulties. At higher ones the AI is also dumb but it gets a head start and you are handicapped

Uh. It’s often dumb because simpler strategies are easier to implement.

Take poker for example. There are bots that play near perfect games (and have ruined online poker).

Most popular single player poker games don’t use good AI for the computer players. They just alter the odds when drawing cards and “advanced” opponents are just “luckier.” No strategy required, when the computer player is always dealt unbeatable hands.

So many games in every genre use similar tricks to simulate skilled gameplay. Whenever you can just change a knob and tweak chance, there’s no AI.

We could absolutely be using LLMs in games, I've made a few prototypes with this concept but I'm just 1 dev with little time, I'm honestly shocked that nothing great has already been released utilizing one well, I've been messing around with this concept since tensorflow days.

> AI in video games is dumb by design

that is absolutely omega untrue and i cant even think of how you arrive at that conclusion. unless you mean "dumb by design" as in, the devs try their best to not make the bots have wallhacks and insta headshot you because they obviously could - but that has nothing to do with intelligence, thats just the AI having data it shouldnt have

What? You can't imagine why, in game design, the goal is not to make the hardest possible game? If enemies were able to dodge all of your attacks or something, a game could very easily become extremely frustrating.

i missunderstood you i think, it sounded to me like you were saying that the reason why AI in strategy games sucks is intentional design, which is absolutely not true - there simply is no way to make a "good" AI in most genres like shooters as well. a "good" AI in this case not meaning flawless execution and being unbeatable, but believable and humanlike

That wasnt me originally but I agree with them. Game AI very often, but not always sucks intentionally. I feel it would be very easy to give bots in shooters perfect aim. But they don't.
