Christians worship an invisible sky daddy, natives worshiped a visible ball of burning gas that brings life.

605

u/BluePotatoSlayer 3h ago

Hey! Sun is not burning nor is it (just) gas. It almost completely plasma and is fusing hydrogen

299

u/Objective-Internal52 3h ago

Also it's actively trying to kill you.

That would imply intent. The Sun is not alive nor trying to do anything. That would be like saying your fireplace is trying to kill you.

  1. Do not look directly at Sun.

  2. Hydrate regularly.

  3. Use Sun creams.

  4. Don't paint your roof in black.

  5. When crossing a desert, carry enough water.

  6. Water your crops.

  7. Sacrifice your enemies to Sun.

  8. Have a rest in a shade.

  9. Hide magnifying glasses.

  10. Do not go to Mars.

4

u/Haunter52300 1h ago

No? This is a pagan practise, even if a lot of layman worshippers need this simplification to understand the faith. Sophisticated Christian theology expressly denies this notion. The Romans accused Christians of being atheists for denying this type of God, and for more modern theology it is pretty established God is supposedly incorporeal, timeless and omnipotent

5

u/Belz_Zebuth 1h ago

The point is that he's indetectable, unlike the sun.

4

u/Royal_Radish_3069 40m ago

to borrow some vernacular from magic the gathering: reading the meme explains the meme

92

u/MarMacPL 3h ago

The Sun is real and we know it.

The God is 'real' because of faith but we can't be sure of that.

15

u/Lighthades 2h ago

So if you have enough faith in ghosts they will be real?

31

u/MarMacPL 2h ago

Then you will believe they are real. That is the definition of faith - something that we believe is real but we can not proof it and do not need to proof it.

22

u/skr_replicator 2h ago edited 2h ago

You should need to prove something that you're allowing to take over life to that much extent.

It is far more reasonable to worship the Sun that actually is there and giving us life and we know it, even though it doesn't need or want worship. Then just worship something completely made up that nobody has ever seen, and stories about do not follow any laws of physics to the point of being unbelievable to any rational person.

→ More replies (18)

7

u/Wait_ItGetsWorse 2h ago

'faith' is the excuse someone gives when they don't have a good reason to believe. Why would you believe in something you do not have sufficient evidence for. You are definitialy irrational.

3

u/AminiumB 1h ago

Some people confuse the lack of empirical evidence of a metaphysical claim as irrationality, that is simply just a categorical misunderstanding of the fact these are two seperate fields of knowledge.

2

u/Baldazar666 1h ago

Because it is irrationality. We are talking about believing things that go against the laws of physics.

2

u/AminiumB 1h ago

The laws of physics are a property of the universe, why would the necessary being that justifies the existence of our reality be bound by the laws or have the same properties of his contingent creation?

I don't think you understand what constitutes irrationality in this subject.

3

u/Baldazar666 1h ago

You seem to be under the impression that you are providing some sort of logical argument. You aren't. You are working under the assumption that something that doesn't obey the laws of physics already exists and you try to explain why it wouldn't obey those laws, while providing zero proof to support your theory. There is this thing called the scientific process. This isn't it.

4

u/AminiumB 59m ago

It seems you don't understand the difference between empirical evidence and logical reasoning in general, though they overlap at times which I assume where your misunderstanding comes from.

The idea is entirely logical in the metaphysical sense and doesn't make an empirical claim.

This is in particular a distinction between contingent or dependent reality and a necessary reality, God in this sense is the necessary reality that justifies the existence of our contingent reality and thus he can't have the properties of contingency that the universe has.

You should actually learn about these concepts instead of confusing the category of knowledge that's being discussed here.

The joke is Colonialism and Catholicism. White man believes white man did good by introducing god to primitive people. God not real sun real sun tangible object Catholicism god not that

5

u/Ayuditya 2h ago edited 2h ago

You joke, but missionaries had a huge positive impact in my tribe back in the day. Before Catholicism, it was headhunting other tribe's people to plant skulls on cornerstone just to build houses and bridges, animal sacrifices to decode a hunt, and lots of human skull worshipping. Somehow our tribe missed the memo of "kill people, bad".

And Christian art depicts holiness by putting a sun around heads. Go figure.

9

u/Err0c0d3 2h ago

That's not a sun that's a halo

9

u/LowIqKunt 1h ago

That iconography originates with sol invictvs, the unconquerable sun. 'halo' also just straight up refers to the apperent disk around the sun.

Also, this is not the only pagan connection Christianity has. The trinity itself comes from church authorities trying to fit Neo platonic metaphysics into christianity. They uplift Jesus to status of godhood, which contradicts Yahweh's assertion that there is only one god so they invent this logically impossible metaphysics to fix it.

The father is straight up just zeus in his depictions lol.

Christmas is the winter soltice. Santa (st Nicholas) is Odin.

Basically, christianity is an eclectic religion between European paganism and Messianic Judaism.

2

u/Fearless_Owl_2172 58m ago

Reddit moment

2

u/XxRuStEd 30m ago

You really need to back up your claims rather than thinking you've got some sort of defeating argument. Let's go over it one by one, shall we.

  1. The earliest Christian iconography was meant to depict Christ as the divine Logos, and the halo was and still is meant to depict the uncreated light/grace of God. I don't know where and how you've managed to connect that to the roman sun god simply because the "halo represents the halo of the sun."

  2. Neoplatonism didn't influence Trinity theology until St Augustine. The Trinity was already fixed doctrine by then after the Council of Nicaea. In fact, it was Arius who used Neoplatonic ideas about the absolute oneness and transcendence of the Divine into his sub-ordinationist view of Christ.

  3. Depicting the father is heresy. You're basing that claim on modern artwork that depicts him as an old man.

  4. You do realise St Nicholas was real, right? He was present at the Council of Nicaea and was the Bishop of Myra at the time. Only secular traditions made Santa Claus into who he is today, so how the hell did you identify him as Odin??? And Christmas day isn't winter solstice, if you're using the Georgian or the revised Julian calander it's a few days after it and if you're using the Julian calendar it's nearly an entire month after.

  5. I need to point out that the liturgy of the Church and tradition work in synergy together. We have all examples of such in the Orthodox church, from Greek culture, all the way to Alaskan culture. Liturgical traditions anchor worship in ancient roots, creating a living tradition that continually makes the past acts of Christ present, active and unchanging in the lives of the faithful.

5

u/CouldNotAffordOne 2h ago

Hmmm. I just found out: I'm a fellow sun worshipper.

My solar panels lower my energy bill pretty well.

3

u/Alt123Acct 3h ago

4

u/Unique-Charity7024 1h ago

The maker of this meme lacks any deeper understanding. The picture is a mashup. The priest is taken from the painting "Père Marquette and the Indians". Marquette was preaching in North America, in particular to the Odawa tribes. They did not worship the sun, but the manitouk spirits, the most important of which were the four winds, the underwater serpents, and the thunderbirds. The natives in this mashup are clearly identifiably as Hindu, in particular Dothi ascetics. In Hinduism, the sun is indeed venerated as Surya, as a principle of spiritual enlightenment. In this way they are still worshipping the sun, which makes the whole dialogue pointless.

Congratulations, this abomination manages to be insulting to four different groups at once.

The joke is that the natives, like many pre-abrahamic cultures, worshipped nature, which actually has a real impact on the world, while christians through the bible put more emphasis on the worship of an invisible deity

There was a sentiment from hardcore vhristians that the natives were uncivilized before they were conquered, masking their colonialism as a benevolent act that modern natives should be thankful of, when in reality it was probably the worst thing that could've happened to the natives as their entire culture and wellbeing was erased almost completely

1

u/EconArc_2 20m ago

In the certain spots in Kings & Samuel I recall the author having a particular hatred for sun worshipers. Enough that it's given some credence to the idea that someone familiar with the Aten or Akenaten was trying to restart that sun religion in the area around Israel. I don't think it holds too much weight though as there were plenty of local pagan religions in the area that worshiped the sun.
