I had a helmet stolen at 11 years old, this was right when we implemented a law for bicycle helmets. I was given a ticket that day and my parents expected me to go door to door asking if I could do lawn work for money. Anyway I had to pay like 300$ since it just sat and accrued for 5 years when I wanted my drivers license. They fucked me bad.

The original ticket was like 45$

The law and your parents are assholes for not paying that for you and at least having you pay them back

How the fuck can an 11 year old be fined? What state was this insanity in?

Yep I worked on a farm as a farmhand. Shoveling shit from stalls, feeding down sawdust from the holding room (great way to ruin shoes), and feeding the cows/horses/sheep.

Great experience in hindsight, but it was fucking work. I was getting paid $2.50/hr btw.

Oh, if we're counting those types of jobs, I've been working since I was like 10.

Started babysitting at 12. I almost said the only break I had was with a full time schedule in college but actually I was a student worker part time during the semester and full time in the summer. sigh

Wow... I forgot about babysitting. I keep thinking I started working at 14. I started babysitting at 12 also.

Oh, god, I remember being a student worker on campus. That was considered "financial aid" so we didn't even get minimum wage.

I didn't have a car (even though I worked 2 jobs the summer before college) so I was kind of stuck with the campus job.

And then when you're stuck on campus you end up using all your money ON CAMPUS!!

Yup. I remember being hard capped to 5 hours per week as a TA and grader when it def took more than 5 fucken hours...

So the $10 an hour ended up being less than minimum wage.

I had a lawn cutting business at 12. $20 each for an acre apiece. Wish I had spent that time doing kid stuff.

It's why I won't let mine work until 16

Good idea. Mine was kind of forced, my dad had hip surgery and I had to take over the lawn duties at 12 so I tried to make a little money with it. Not worth it.

Gotta do what you gotta do. We can only try to give them a better starting hand than we were dealt

I was helping my dad clean his apartments starting at age 10. I had some money to spend on things, but I regret working. I wish I could have spent that time making friends instead so I'd have fun memories to look back on. By the time I graduated high school I was so burnt out from school and from working for the past 8 years that I didn't feel like doing anything, and I got payed so little from cleaning the apartments that I didn't even really have much to show for all my work. If I can ever afford to have kids they're not going to spend their childhood working.

Me too. I cleaned horse corals and spread it in a field with a tiny tractor for 3 years

Same here. De-tasseling all summer starting at 14, and I had a part-time job at my HS during the school year starting Freshman year and going through my Senior year.

15 for me, my job didn't follow any of the states labor laws so basically I was closing the store every school night.

Same here friend. 14 was my first payroll job, did babysitting/pet sitting from between 11-13.
