I'm not even sure if my.high school had a reunion.... if so I was never told about it.

404

u/PowerSkunk92 Xennial (1983) Jul 12 '26

Same. I went to three different high schools, and not one of them even sent me an invite to any kind of reunion.

417

u/gunsforevery1 Jul 12 '26

Your school doesn’t hold it. Someone from your class chooses to organize it.

413

The valid Victorian.

216

u/PapayaOtherwise3346 Jul 12 '26

Is that the person who takes over the role of valedictorian after the others have been disqualified?

117

u/joeyjoejoeshabado42 Jul 13 '26

Nah they’re supposed to designate someone to organize and then attend reunions dressed in historically accurate (valid) Victorian garb. Our school did a legit renaissance man instead, cause there was some kind of protest amongst the masses for getting rid of the Victorian era inequality or something

It's whoever was student body president for me.

So if any high school kids are reading this. Think long and hard before you're tasked with that life time commitment of planning a party in your home town every decade.

The girl that was our president lives in New York now and all her family moved away. She actually found a bar with a private room in our small Louisiana hometown and organized everything.

I didn't go but saw pictures.

57

u/goodguessiswhatihave Jul 13 '26

You're also allowed to just say "fuck it" and not do it. You aren't actually making a life long commitment by being class president in high school

15

u/Jessness-1859 Jul 13 '26

I’m sponsor of senior officers at my school, and I tell them this. A reunion is organized by whoever wants to do it. You are not making a decades-long commitment seeking an office in 12th grade. As far as I’m concerned, you’re free once you toss your hat at graduation.

Anyways 20 years later, I've done exactly zero planning, hosting, attending of any reunion.

Generally you’d only be invited to the one you graduated from. It’s not an “everyone who passed through the doors” thing.

10

u/PowerSkunk92 Xennial (1983) Jul 12 '26

I didn't get one from there either.

16

u/Sir_Badtard Jul 12 '26

I mean did you join an Alumni group on social media?

That's what mine did.

Sounds unreasonable to expect someone to keep track of 300 addresses and where you moved 10 years after high school if you were waiting for something in the mail.

17

u/lieuwestra Jul 13 '26

Exactly, the reason you don't know is because no one bothered to keep your contact details or look you up on facebook.

6

u/bannedagainomg Jul 13 '26

Or like he said someone actually have to organize it and if no classmate is interested it wont happen, my year didnt have one.

Everyone have social media so you can easily keep in contact with old classmates anyway, reunions are sort of losing their purpose.

244

u/Meizas Jul 12 '26

Very true, but it's not like I catch up with my highschool friends often or ever in person. It'd be cool to see them

227

u/shes_a_gdb Jul 12 '26

I keep in touch with the people I want to keep in touch with. The rest I'm fine with just social media.

127

u/Neveronlyadream Jul 12 '26

I don't even bother with the rest on social media.

Got rid of my Facebook about 10 years ago, but I realized that I had all these people who had literally no interest in interacting with me that I had no interest in interacting with either.

I just keep the people I'm actually interested in talking to around.

109

u/longdrivehome Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

My thesis is that it's not healthy to have high definition memories shoved in our face on a daily basis like Facebook does. Fading memories are the brain's way of making room for new experiences and (at least to me) I like that the bad parts fade and the good parts stay for the highlight reel. It feels really weird that I could go on Facebook if I still had it and relive a college party with high def photos from 2007 when I'm nearly 40 years old.

My highschool friends who are still on Facebook ask me if I saw what happened to some random person we graduated high school with over 20 years ago, then think I'm the crazy one for not being on Facebook for the last 15 years...I just don't think our brains were meant to keep minute-to-minute tabs on the kid who pee'd his pants in 3rd grade.

It also makes bumping into someone from the past a much, much more pleasant experience. Like tell me something, surprise me, literally any story you tell is falling on virgin ears - that part of the human experience goes away when you follow people on facebook for 2 decades after you graduate.

This. the people you want to keep in touch with, you easily can. its not like our parents where reunions where the way to catch up with people. they really arent necessary anymore

24

u/Bugbread Jul 12 '26

For longer than the ages of any redditor's parents, it's been easy to keep in touch with people you want to keep in touch with. Nowadays "writing a letter" sounds like a huge, formal affair and insurmountable obstacle, but it used to be something people did for fun. Same with phone calls.

Reunions aren't (weren't) about the Tier 1 folks, the people you actively want to keep in touch with, they're about the Tier 2 folks: the folks who weren't quite your friends, but who you were friendly with. The folks that you enjoyed chatting with while in school but you didn't hang out with after the school day ended. The friends of your friends. You'd spend time with them almost daily back in the day, and you enjoyed their company, but not enough to want to keep in regular touch. But after a decade or two, you wonder what became of them and you hope the best for them and you want to talk to them again. That's what reunions are good for.

13

I'd disagree on the base that we as individuals curate what we want people to see on social media. Actually being in a person's presence and having a one-on-one still does something a screen can't. The more generations going further remember this, the better.

126

u/Catsdrinkingbeer Jul 12 '26

I doubt I'm going to get any deeper than what is seen on my social media 20 years later with a person I barely talked to in high school.

78

u/MattIsLame Jul 12 '26

it just becomes the same old conversation of catch up and the same questions asked from both sides until you run out of questions and theres a brief awkward pause because after getting this person's brief life story from the past 20 years, you realize you dont know them anymore. then you fumble around from the pre-recorded questions into improv territory. thats when you either find a common interest or walk away to engage in this entire process all over again with a new, old friend.

81

u/NotTooDeep Jul 12 '26

At my 25th reunion, I arrived with some friends and some old enemies, and I left with more friends. So there's that.

One enemy sought me out to apologize for bullying me for three years. He had two teenage sons that were being bullied and realized what a dick he'd been, and wanted to apologize to me. He cried. I forgave him. We never mentioned if either of us "made it" or not.

17

u/MattIsLame Jul 12 '26

thats the power of human interaction and a triumph of the good in people that is seldom represented through social media. I know my reunion would have been a lot of fun. but It just wasn't something I felt strongly about either way. maybe in 10 years.

I think they meant it more in the sense that high school reunions used to be a good way to reconnect with people you'd lost track of after high school. But now that we have social media, that happens less. People still delete their social media accounts, stop using them, or never had them to begin with but it's an edge case now.

10

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '26

I think they meant that a connection on social media is not the same as a connection in real life.

62

u/Askew_2016 Jul 12 '26

I wasn’t invited to my 10 year. Yes my class was still that cliquey 10 years post high school

77

u/Crunchy_Lunch Jul 12 '26

My grandmother ended up settling down in her hometown and went to all the reunions. She said it finally stopped being cliquey at the 50th, but only because so many people had died that the cliques were broken up.

40

u/Askew_2016 Jul 12 '26

Holy cow that is depressing

5

u/alias213 Jul 13 '26

Try working in senior care. They're like 70% widowed grandmas because men die earlier.

7

u/AntikytheraMachines Jul 13 '26

I had a WWII veteran regular customer.

His commando squad / regiment had met before the ANZAC day parade under the same tree every year.

One year he was the only one there waiting.

5

u/HulkSMASHley_23 Jul 12 '26

The 50th is when I plan to start attending. I told my peers that significantly less than a year after graduation.

The kind of person who would organise a 10 year high school reunion, would definitely strike me as the type of person who would still have that high school mentality.

24

u/Ordinarily_Claim Jul 12 '26

Same here. We had our 20th reunion two years ago. The co-organizer is a close friend and didn't even mention it to me. I was like “Dude, you play golf with my husband and we have a yearly end-of-summer BBQ at my house, how did that slip your mind?”

11

u/haggynaggytwit Jul 12 '26

Maybe because you see each other so often now, they no longer associate you with high school and forgot you went there.

Towards the end of my Senior Year, the school put out a "Senior Video" that was supposed to commemorate our graduating class of 500 or so students. The video probably had about thirty people max. The same ten or so people throughout the montage. Lots of folks were annoyed, but whatever.

Our high school reunions always consist of the same thirty or so folks. They don't invite anybody else. At least they post the reunions to Facebook I guess.

18

u/HumanPea1140 Jul 12 '26

That's how my yearbook was. There was a section that was supposed to commemorate the senior class, with pages and pages of candid photos of all of us. Most of the pictures ended up being the same ~20 seniors and their friends that took yearbook class that year.

Yes, we had a yearbook class. It was supposed to be for aspiring editors and designers to get experience with releasing a publication, but every year, it was usually a bunch of more popular kids taking it as one of their last blow off classes and to ensure they showed up in the yearbook a lot.

I was good at sports and friends with a lot of them, so I had a good mix of pictures, but even back then, I thought the whole thing was super shitty.

I didn't go to my 10-year in 2019, but saw pictures. Out of our class of ~200, about 30-40 people showed up. It was a lot of those same cliquey popular kids.

Ours was an open invitation/RSVP type thing. Bonus points if you could point to your picture in our senior class yearbook, though that was mostly a gag.
We are the senior class that chose "Photograph" by Nickelback as our class song thinking it a joke 🙃

Graduated 26 years ago, never once looked back. I had 900 kids in my class and have no interest in keeping in touch with 99% of them. I didn't choose them as classmates.

The few good friends I had in high school I am still in touch with almost daily. Three of them were groomsmen at my wedding four years ago.

Even though my hometown is a great place to grow up and raise a family (always ranked in the top-3 best places to live in the country), I feel sorry for those who never ventured out after high school or college. Granted I'm no globetrotter, but man their world is so small.

6

u/Icy_Secret_2909 Jul 12 '26

Mine never had our 10-year. But, everyone I cared about I am friends with on facebook. And at this point we are just minor aquaintences. So, I see no point in going even if a 20-year was going to happen.

4

u/MavisBeacons_Sextape Jul 12 '26

Mine too, apparently the “Save the Date! 9/11” emails and letters for ours went out last week. I didn’t receive any, but I keep in touch with plenty of my classmates just fine - via text, or meeting up when we’re in the same city - so handful of them sent me the screenshots.

Deleted my Facebook in 2012 and it’s really not hard to make the time to keep up with the people you actually care about. I had the type of high school experience you see depicted as being ideal (or the ideal cliche) in media, had a great time…and I still don’t give a single fancy fuck about attending mine. Zero desire. Most of my friends feel the same.

20

u/NoxTempus Jul 13 '26

Eh, that's just because the people that organise this shit peaked in highschool.

Like, think about. Imagine genuinely thinking that being "fun" in highschool is a measure of an adult's worth (or even just their ability to entertain).

Is there anything more pathetic than exalting your highschool social ladder a whole 15 years later?

Honestly, social media killed the high school reunion. I don't need to pay money for a ticket to see who’s thriving and who’s stuck in the past. I’ve been passively keeping tabs on that for 15 years via Facebook. The 'reveal' factor is completely gone.

177

u/ELIte8niner Jul 12 '26

Yeah, class of 06, and we just flat out haven't had any.

60

u/Gatorade_Nut_Punch Millennial Jul 12 '26

29

u/Geno0wl Jul 12 '26

My class didn't even have a 20 year reunion. I even messaged people double checking and they also said there wasn't one.

Guess we picked a shitty class president

5

u/katerineia Jul 13 '26

I wasn't even student counsel. But I knew a lot of people and got asked to help plan the 20th. I live out of state, i talk to one person from my class, gtfo here. I declined helping for numerous reasons. But ultimately because I have zero responsibility, care, or interest in traveling home to see people who were part of my life for barely 10% of my life.

u/ClosetCrossfitter Jul 12 '26

Also ‘06 from a small town. The class president actually reached out to a smaller group in the spring to try to get something set up but we all just floundered for ideas and it seems like nothing’s happening. I do like to go, but I live states away, so I can’t hit n impromptu thing usually.

From what I saw from class of ‘05, it seems like at least two people / groups threw informal reunions. Was funny to watch different Facebook posts about them.

7

u/kamasutures Jul 12 '26

There is a neglected Facebook group for my graduating class that would talk about the 20 year every couple months but I don't think anyone cares enough. I went to school in a far out suburb of DC (military, government workers etc) so I think everyone was just too transitory to put down roots like that.

Class of '07 here, too. I was like you had a first one? But I guess we had a 10 year one too. The fact that it's been almost 20 years is inane. I feel like it was just a few years ago lol.

35

u/Krunkenbrux Jul 12 '26

My 10th feels like it was 5 years ago. It was 14. That’s 24 years since graduating. That can’t be.

24

u/thatguy_art Jul 12 '26

Threw out my back while reading this comment...can time stop??

8

u/Automatic_Zebra_1099 Jul 12 '26

I’m 07 and there was a 10 year one, my group of friends chose not to go and went to our local watering hole instead.

Cut to 11pm and most of the people who went to the reunion showed up at the watering hole.

Wasn’t ide but if I’m forced Into it there’s worse ways.

I like that you added in that last part. Comments bashing their whole graduating class are giving off that they were the problem.

I won’t be going to mine because I don’t care enough to catch up with anyone I’m not already in touch with. But my classmates were nice people for the most part.

17

u/zaeya4maya Jul 12 '26

Yeah because that was so long ago. And I’m not perfect either so who am I to judge? Just wishing everyone the best from a distance.

10

u/HaveYouEver21 Jul 12 '26

Agreed. Not planning on going to mine but I was also just a major introvert. That's not anyone else's fault but mine lol. Most people were cool.

Facebook ruined the ability to bump into someone you haven’t seen in 10 years and genuinely want to know what they have been up to.

‘07 as well. We did a 5 year that I attended, it was silly. Skipped the 10 year which was sad since we had 2 of out of our 135 that had passed in between. Not sure if we are doing a 20 or not.

4

u/DancingTVs Jul 12 '26

You didn’t miss anything. Loner here too and I was immediately sidelined at my reunion even though I had come out of my shell a LOT and discovered my inner extrovert ever since I went to college and subsequently got married. But yeah the reunion put me right back into my loner headspace and I felt very unwelcome and uncared about just like I did in high school. So. Yeah.

I went to my ten year and it was so much fun. Maybe it was a small town thing? I didn’t like high school and I didn’t like everyone there, but I had friends and many friends by proximity who I would likely have never seen again otherwise.

72

u/labtiger2 Jul 12 '26

Same! Our 20 year is in October, and I'm excited. I enjoyed seeing people I was friends with but haven't kept in touch with.

34

u/TurnMeIn4ANewModel Jul 12 '26

Just had our 20 year. It was a blast. Saw a bunch of people that I had seen in years and a bunch of buddies I’m still really close with. Did a golf outing with some of the ones I’m still close with the day before. The whole thing was super fun.

Same here with my 20 year. There were plenty of people who I got along with in HS, but just never kept in touch with over the years so it was great to party and catch up with them over a weekend. A lot of people seemed to have gotten a lot friendlier since high school too (no surprise).

Seems like kind of a badge of honor for people to talk about how much they hated their classmates, but I'm glad to see that there's literally dozens of us who feel otherwise.

12

u/SBGuy043 Jul 13 '26

Millennials: Social media is ruining socialization and third places!

Also Millennials: Social media tells me all I need to know about these people. What reason would I ever want to meet with them in person???

Fwiw my wife and I are high school sweethearts from the same year. Skipped the 10 year because we thought it would be a waste of time but decided to go to the 20 this year. Went with 0 expectations and it was way more fun than expected. Talked to a bunch of people we really never hung out with in high school but everyone was just genuinely interested to catch up and hear what people were up to. Wife took a shot to her ego when the super popular golf team guy asked her where she went to high school LOL.

17

u/coopstow Jul 12 '26

Guess I'm one of the dozens who actually liked their classmates lol

5

u/nautical_nonsense_ Jul 13 '26

lol yeah same, I loved my high school

17

u/coopstow Jul 12 '26

I just organized and attended my 10 year and had a blast! About half the total class showed up and we had a great time catching up. Granted we went to a small high school but we all got along for the most part.

27

u/DeepWaffleCA Jul 12 '26

My 10 year reunion was like 5 years of therapy in a few hours. The few close friends I'm still in contact with couldn't make it at the last minute, so I nearly skipped it. I had drinks with some of the old douchebag/bully crowd and it turns out they were good guys that were just going through shit. They'd grown a lot in those 10 years.

4

u/frallet Jul 13 '26

Good for you to be able to see that. My class had like 23 people that all grew up together and the idea of seeing 1 of them was enough for me not to go see any of them

4

u/MostLikelyMakinPoopy Jul 12 '26

I went to my 20 and had a blast. Class of about 500 and maybe 50 showed. It was a mix of realizing some of the people I socialized most with actually suck, and also realizing how much I missed some others.

I went to an urban high school with a huge student body. For some reason our ten year reunion was $150 a head and hosted at a golf course?? Only a couple of people bought tickets (out of a grad class of 700 or so) and I heard it got cancelled the week of. I remember a friend who stayed in the same city telling me about a bunch of them meeting at a bar instead.  I live 900 miles away from there now, so nooo chance. I deleted facebook like seven or eight years ago and I think I’m set for life knowing I never have to see a lot of those people ever again.

6

u/meganmun0z Jul 12 '26

I’m curious, are reunions more common at schools with smaller student bodies? It makes sense that they would be, I also went to a school with a huge student body, was one of 1000 grads in 2011 and I don’t think we had a reunion at all.

I still have some of the same friends from high school so I think I would have heard if one happened? I feel like all I remember from 2021 was figuring out COVID stuff and being worried that it would get bad again. I worked for a doctor so I didn’t get to stay home during lockdown. Working for a doctor during the pandemic gave me PTSD 😭

11

u/LowerSuccotash8160 Jul 12 '26

I think you’re onto something. The logistics of tracking down and finding that many people a decade or more after would be brutal . I believe my reunion sent out facebook invites and my grad class had a facebook group but pretty much everyone I am still in contact with dumped facebook a long time ago.

Might also be a Gen X/Boomer thing? I’m a bartender and we’ve had a great deal of 40 year reunions with big turnouts in my current city.

u/SuddenAvocado Jul 12 '26

I also went to HS in a large urban area, class had 500 grads, and our reunion is all classes every year at the school. The school organizes it and puts it on annually, the culinary program caters it and they get someone to do the linens. Our class prez sends out a reminder for the milestone ones, it would be insane to put that kind of planning on a student, even a grown up one.

I think it comes down to the type of class you had. Weirdly ours was very inclusive for 2006. We would have farm parties where the whole school would show up Nerds and all.

weirdly I had zero desire to hang out with the for a night. Hope they’re doing good though.

And never chose to be around either. The state forced me to hang out with these weirdos and I’m sure the feeling is mutual toward me too.

Much prefer the people I found after.

43

u/FINE_WiTH_It Jul 12 '26

I went. Loved it. Great to see everyone and catch up.

6

u/Dawnzarelli Jul 12 '26

I’m no longer friends with any of them but I would have felt the same. One of my classmates asked my mom why I didn’t go to the 20th, and that they missed me. My mom asked me and I was all “uh, I wasn’t invited” 🤣 I would have totally gone and enjoyed it but it would be partial schadenfreude. Like they all shat our babies and lots of them super young and I’ve been leading a pretty interesting life.

I would definitely commend and enjoy hearing about their accomplishments and good things in general.

4

u/FINE_WiTH_It Jul 12 '26

I would say about 1/3 of my class showed up. I actually think it was great to see people in person. We talked a lot about old times and just general life. It really wasn't any "look at me, look at what I have done" type of things.

It was actually really awesome and now a lot of us are talking about making it a thing more often.

Edit: Also, Facebook really doesn't give you a lot of details on how someone is actually doing; not like in person conversation does.

Either way, I don't care. I live out of state now, and I doubt I would have gone anyway.

Graduation day was one of the happiest days of my life. I have no desire to re-open high school memories outside of the few people I keep in touch with

4

u/schwing710 Jul 12 '26

My high school didn’t even have a reunion. Most people who went to my school probably got the fuck out and never looked back.

6

8

u/High-Speed-1 Jul 12 '26

I wasn’t popular in school. No real enemies, just never felt like I fit into any group. I have run into a few people that I knew in HS. Most of them were struggling to make it in life.

I learned about 1-2 girls I liked that would have been interested in me. That would have been nice to know back then. No biggie though.

One girl showed up in the news like 10+ years ago for putting her infant in the trash can. A neighbor thankfully heard the crying and saved the baby and notified police. I use her as a clear indication that I could be doing a lot worse in life.

I haven’t talked to anyone from high school since high school, and for good reason.

14

u/Kennikend Millennial 85 Jul 12 '26

I went to one.

I neither loved nor hated high school. By the time I graduated though, I had a couple groups of friends that were top tier.

Still, I surprised myself by going to my 20th. Wouldn’t normally be my thing but a friend wanted to go and not go alone. I wound up having a blast and the after party was lit. Since then, about 20 of us got together the year after and we are planning another hang this year.

Low expectations served me well.

5

u/QueenAlpaca Jul 12 '26

Nah and I don’t even know if one was held. Too big of a school and I only knew like 3-4 people. Had it been at the tiny school I made most of my childhood friends at (K-12, most knew each other their whole school career) I’d been more likely to go. Moving so much was my biggest hate.

3
