Discussion An Indian breed, can anyone guess the breed?
Hint - this is the only dog breed in the entire world to be bred specifically to herd and guard poultry, only found in India.

Also called Kolleti jaagilam ,literally means dog of kolleti and is from Andhra Pradesh. Kolleru is a fresh water lake. anything that is native to kolleru is called Kolleti in telugu.

The Jonangi is a naturally gentle and calm dog shaped by its traditional role of guarding vulnerable domestic birds such as ducks and hens This background has made the breed attentive patient and protective rather than aggressive by default However it shows strong defensive instincts when faced with unfamiliar people or animals perceived as a threat especially within its territory or around the birds it protects
Historically the Jonangi population declined significantly and was close to extinction In recent years dedicated efforts by Aseel chicken breeders and rural enthusiasts have helped revive the breed recognizing its value as a reliable guardian for poultry and livestock Today the Jonangi stands as an example of a functional working dog whose temperament reflects both gentleness and vigilance depending on the situation

These ancient breed has a slightly different digestive system. They can't digest carbs like normal dogs, they need high animal protein diet. They usually eat a mix of beef, fish and chickens. But some farmer avoid giving them chickens as their job is to protect poultry, do that they don't develop a taste for them, so they feed these dogs only red meat.

JONANGI .
it is a breed native to Andhra Pradesh along side the godhavari belt. They are very resilient and protective and very very minimalistic fur , usually a furless breed of dogs found elsewhere have skin issues and needs maintenance. But not our JONANGI. They love mud and slush as it helps them stay cool and regulate body temperatures in the hot and humid areas of Godhavari belt.
They are reared by Duck Farmers to monitor their ducks.

India already has an incredible diversity of native dog breeds, adapted to our climate, resilient, and deeply connected to our ecosystems. Instead of chasing foreign breeds as a status symbol, we should be focusing on adopting, appreciating, and conserving our own desi dogs. It’s not just about preference, it’s about responsibility, sustainability, and breaking out of that colonial mindset that makes us undervalue what’s already ours.

You didn't. I was just venting. I'm frustrated with the amount of huskies people buying whilst ignoring these wonderful indian breeds.

Looks like a hound killer mix
1
u/First_Ad_3642 May 06 '26
It isn't a hound. The closest genetic relative are shepherd dogs. It's a utility farm dog, it'll herd poultry, guard them and be a companion dog as well. This breed is called Jonangi.

u/Fit-Ad968 May 06 '26
Thanks, learnt something new. But it's not yet registered with NBAGR as I know.
1
u/First_Ad_3642 May 06 '26
This is an extremely rare breed, india has over 30 native dog breeds but only 5 is registered with them.
