Discussion A stray dogs reaction to getting petted. How many of us pet stray dogs ! I do ๐
Be kind to them. They are also first time living this life.

I do but after accessing their body language. I'd say I pet over 90% dogs for the first time after confirming their body language. But if I am not sure and if the dig doesn't respond to my verbal clues, then I refrain from petting them.
I also carry handwash and sanitizer in my bike dicky and if after petting I have to eat, I wash my hands well.

That's right. I don't pet dogs until they too are okay with human interaction. Also nothing very firm but with soft hands, as I have heard that street dogs get injured easily and may have pain points so should be careful...

Once a dog starts to love you, it wonโt leave you.

I wish I could but, I do get a bit scared.. but I offer them some food if I have.

u/Confident-Profile143 Mar 13 '26
Until I got my own dog, I was also the same. No hate towards dogs but maintained distance. Now, haha, I have to pet every dog I encounter. Such cuties.

u/organictamarind Mar 13 '26
Actually, strays in my area are really good. Better behaved than humans. But they are nervous if we go too close, so I get a bit scared to pet . But I always give some leftover food (if it's edible to them) when I come from restaurants to them. I wish they could all get loving homess..

Nobody dares confront me on streets I go to regularly because if they did the whole dog gang I play with and give food to in passing would guard me like a little guardian angels they are.
1
u/Confident-Profile143 Mar 13 '26
Hahaha so adorable ๐๐๐ฆฎ๐โ๐ฆบ You have a dog gang, wowww. I'm so jealous
2
u/Hollow-_-Tree Mar 13 '26
My mom used to do it then I picked up her routine we don't do anything special just some food and things we can spare there were time's where people had problems so we do in specific locations now where nobody has objected yet. Didn't know the effect until one day a some rude guy made a move one day and became an example.

All the damn time ๐ญ๐
Which had become an issue because my roommate HATES IT. And she makes gagging sounds whenever I pet stray doggos when she's with me so I don't do it in front of her.

There is a busy road stretch with gang of dogs in Chennai, located near Blue cross. I see some of those men returning from office work spending time with them playing and feeding.
1
u/Confident-Profile143 Mar 17 '26
I too do that with my on route streeties. There used to be a gang of puppies who used to stay on a big vacant plot. Everyday after office I used to get milk and bread and give them. They all grew up and scattered around further. But whenever I pass from there now and see some adult dogs playing, i always tell them in my mind "I used to feed you cutie pie and see how strong you became"...

Nope.
Rabies is literally incurable past a certain point. Not gonna happen.
Fleas, ticks, mites, worms, skin infections.
You're insane to pet a stray dog without seeking treatment afterwards. Especially if you're sitting there eating food. You have no idea what it has, or its temperament.
I love watching the rescue videos where they pick them up, but they alway skip the part where they have to deflea THEMSELVES after de-fleaing / bathing the dogs. You'll notice they often wear gloves too.
People's pets, dogs on leashes - still not "100% safe" but it wouldn't be a concern for me if the dog was friendly and looked after.
But stray animals? No.
I work in schools and just from the school field, we have kids come back with ticks, tick-borne diseases, worms, etc.
I'm by no means a germophobe (precisely the opposite) but no way I'd be petting a stray.
2
u/Confident-Profile143 Mar 13 '26
Hmm good for you, if it works that way !! My streeties are absolutely cuties... Those pets are not stopping anytime soon haha !!!

I'm too damn hygienic to touch strays that roam around our trashy cities and eat whatever the heck people throw outside. The only ones I pet are my friends dogs after which I thoroughly wash my hands with soap.
-2
u/SuperHumanHere Mar 13 '26
I tried once and it tried to bite me. Luckily I am not hurt. I will not do it again. I recommend not to do it. Not all stray dogs are friendly
-4
u/PinkTruck555 Mar 13 '26
oh ffs, do NOT pet stray dogs. google Brijesh Solanki.
6
u/Confident-Profile143 Mar 13 '26
Awareness is important. All strays are not rabid dogs. If a bite or scratch by any dog, pls take preventive vaccine and rabies is 100% preventable.
Pls don't spread misinformation. Even docile, happy dogs suffer because PPL like you spread such hate and misinformation. You seem educated and on reddit. Pls be responsible ๐

u/PinkTruck555 Mar 13 '26
Where is the misinformation in my comment? Itโs factual. And what do you mean by โppl meโ? Where is the hate in what I said? I never said anyone should hate stray dogs.
There have even been alerts about fake rabies vaccines in India as recently as this last January. Petting stray dogs isnโt real compassion. Real compassion is getting them vaccinated, tagged, and sterilized. Petting a stray for a few seconds doesnโt help them.it can actually leave them vulnerable to diseases, accidents, aggression and it creates risks for both the dogs and humans. Letโs use some common sense here. no one is hating strays0
u/Confident-Profile143 Mar 13 '26
Also, this is a dog lovers group. Why are you here in the first place to spew venom and spread hate. There are enough pages across Reddit and X who will applaud your stance, make you feel special. Why not try there dud.
Sorry misspelt dude.

u/PinkTruck555 Mar 13 '26
This is weird. I am actually advocating stray love. I literally want you to point out the venom and hate you are seeing in what I am saying. If anything you are constantly doing personal attack on me . Talk about hate. You do you man. Leave me alone.
-1
Mar 13 '26
I mean. India does have one of the highest rate of contracting and deaths from rabies. its not a bad idea to not touch strays. lol
3
u/Confident-Profile143 Mar 13 '26
To each his own.
We are informed literate and know what will be harmful and are aware of the precautions. If bitten or scratched, we know vaccine should be taken.
Rabies is 100% preventable when vaccine is taken within the stipulated timeframe.
-1
u/ledow Mar 13 '26
Preventable but not treatable/curable past a point (i.e. lethal).
And you know the best method of prevention? Staying the hell away from possibly infected animals.

Get ready to be downvoted. People donโt realize that even a minor scratch, onee that might not even be noticeable can expose you to so many other infections other than rabies.

All the time. Even have one at home for convenience lol.
You do need to exercise caution and shouldn't just force it on a dog. My son's been taught this since he was a baby. Some dogs in my area are extremely fond of him and will walk with him in a protective circle.
