General Advice Grad Admissions Director Here - Ask Me (almost) Anything

Hi Everyone - long time no see! For those who may not recognize my handle, I’m a graduate admissions director at an R1 university. I won’t reveal the school, as I know many of my applicants are here.

I’m here to help answer your questions about the grad admissions process. I know this is a stressful time, and I’m happy to provide to provide insight from an insider’s perspective if it’ll help you.

A few ground rules: Check my old posts—I may have already answered your question. Keep questions general rather than school-specific when possible. I won’t be able to “chance” you or assess your likelihood of admission. Every application is reviewed holistically, and I don’t have the ability (or desire) to predict outcomes.

Looking forward to helping where I can! Drop your questions below.

Edit: I’m not a professor, so no need to call me one. Also, please include a general description of the type of program you’re applying to when asking a question (ie MS in STEM, PhD in Humanities, etc).

General Advice Cold email to a potential PhD supervisor (US, Fall 2027). Feedback/Criticism before I send?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m applying to US PhD programs for Fall 2027 and drafted a cold email to a PI whose lab I’d love to join. I’d really appreciate honest feedback on tone, length, structure, and whether it shows enough fit without sounding generic. Being first gen this process has made me so anxious and overwhelmed.

Specific questions:
Should i keep name and brief introduction or Not?
Is it too long or about right?
Does the research fit come across clearly, or does it read as flattery?
Is asking for a virtual meeting too forward for a first email?
Anything that would make you, as a PI or current PhD student, skip it?

Thanks in advance!

General Advice Is career advancement a GOOD enough reason for PhD, or should it MAINLY be lifelong PASSION for discovering new knowledeg etc?

• Upvotes

Many jobs are not available if you only have a bachelor's (or even a master's) in pure sciences like biology. A specialization, pivoting to an MBA/sales, or a higher degree, like a PhD, is needed either to enter, OR if you want to climb the career ladder or get senior scientific positions. Can one mention career advancement as the primary reason for getting a PhD in Biology/Biolmedical sciences, since their career growth plateaued because of not having a PhD?

Computational Sciences Master vs PhD?

• Upvotes

Received CMU ECE master offer half a year ago for 27 Spring. Therefore I got half of a year for gap when I promoted my ideas to the prospective advisor at GMU. We have collaborated for 5 months already, and he just gave me oral PhD offer.
I told this news to my parents. Both of them LOVE CMU so much and prefer master offer. My dad even said that it’s acceptable for pursuing ANY PhD with master degree while unacceptable for finishing CMU master program after finishing PhD.

Well I will not change my mind for them.

Biological Sciences Rockefeller faculty - is this the sob section? What exactly is expected here?

• Upvotes

SOP Prompt #3: Share how your background and experiences would enrich the Rockefeller community. (Limit: 250 words)

What kind of background information is expected, since the full CV and research interests are already shared elsewhere in the application?

Also, how can an incoming student, who is the most inexperienced member of the Rockefeller University community, enrich others? Are we expected to write some unique technical skills we have (like having worked with Cryo-EM, or X-ray crystallography, etc, which will be useful to labs, or what? Please help/

General Advice Yale SOM Silver Scholars R1: anyone received an interview invite yet?

Hi all! I applied to the Yale SOM Silver Scholars Program in Round 1 and am still waiting to hear back about interviews. I’ve seen a few people mention R1 invites for the regular MBA, but I haven’t come across many posts from Silver Scholars applicants specifically.

A couple of questions for anyone in the same boat:

  1. Has anyone applying through the Silver Scholars pool received an R1 interview invite? If so, roughly when did it arrive?
  2. For those who have already interviewed, how did it go? What kinds of questions came up, and did the interviewer ask anything specific about applying straight from undergrad or with limited work experience?

Would also love to hear any general tips on preparing. Good luck to everyone waiting this round!

Physical Sciences Chances of Getting a Fully Funded Applied Mathematics PhD in the USA with a 3.26 GPA?

Hi everyone!

I am planning to apply for a fully funded PhD in Applied Mathematics in the USA.

My profile:

Degree: BS Mathematics

CGPA: 3.26/4.00 (80.27%)

Graduation: 2023

Research areas: Applied mathematics, fluid dynamics, differential equations, and numerical methods.

Teaching experience: Calculus, PDEs, Linear Algebra, Mathematical Statistics, Operations Research, and Discrete Mathematics.

I have a few questions:

Have applicants with similar GPAs received fully funded PhD offers?

Which universities should I consider?

Should I apply directly for a PhD or pursue a master's first?

I'd appreciate advice from current PhD students and applicants with similar profiles. Thank you!

Education Feeling exhausted and alone

I’m applying for PhD programs for the second time right now because I was rejected from all of my schools last cycle. For reference, I’m applying to PhD in Higher Education programs, and before anyone says “this is a tough political time, it’s not personal”, please know that I have heard that from everyone I know😭 One of my schools offered me a spot in the 1 year masters program, which I am doing right now, but I’m feeling so overwhelmed and exhausted because I just recovered from getting rejected from all of my schools earlier this year, and now I have to repeat the application process all over again. I’m tired of everyone saying “it’ll be alright”, because it doesn’t feel like it will be, and I’ve never felt more drained. I’ve wanted to pursue the PhD for so long now, and it’s so demoralizing getting rejected from every program. I’m very lucky to have help from a great advisor here in my masters program, but other than her, I feel like no one really understands how exhausting and demoralizing this all feels. I feel bad complaining about this, but I just feel so alone right now, and wanted to know if anyone else is going through this or has gone through this that could offer advice on how to get through it.

Engineering Research Topic Guidance

Hi everyone, I'm planning to email professors for an acceptance letter for ANSO scholarship. I know that relevancy of your background with the professor's research interest is a key. But I have a concern about one thing. Could anyone please tell me which one is better:

  1. Proposing a specific research topic for your master's that is relevant to professor's research area

  2. Proposing a broad and general research area for your master’s that is already part of the professor’s research group

Any suggestions regarding this query or any other suggestions regarding email for getting acceptance would be a great help ❤️

Education Possible to get into Northern Arizona University’s grad school with a 2.64 undergrad GPA?

Hi,

I graduated from Oregon State University with a bachelor‘s in supply chain. My GPA was only 2.64. Admittedly I have bipolar and autism. At the time college was a very rough journey for me. I went through a lot with my mental and physical health. But now I’m more stable than I’ve ever been and I think I can do well in this grad program. The program I want to get into is the educational leadership - community college/higher education, masters of education.

I want to work in higher education as an academic advisor or in student success. During my time at OSU I held positions as a finance/accounting tutor, TA, and my last position there was in student success. I had more of a passion for helping students than my own major. Honestly I don’t want a job in supply chain anymore. It’s in my trash.

Do you think I have a shot at a conditional admission? I really want to get into this program but I’m very doubtful I’ll get in. I emailed the department today asking if it’s even possible before I bother applying.

Please let me know what you think.

Biological Sciences Is it okay to have a non-research faculty LOR for PhD applications? Is it really that bad?

I'm applying to PhD programs(biosciences) in the US and currently have two letters of recommendation from PIs I conducted research with. One of them is also the director of the lab.

For my third letter, my main option is a professor from my master's program whose courses I took.
He knows me to some extent, but I haven't done research with him, so his letter would mainly be based on my academic performance and interactions in class.

I also tried reaching out to a professor I TA'd for in lab classes, but he hasn't been responsive. In any case, that letter wouldn't necessarily be research-focused either..

So, realistically, the professor from my master's program seems to be my only viable option for a third letter.

I've heard from several people that academic LORs that aren't research-based aren't very helpful for PhD applications and could even hurt your chances.
Would a letter from a professor who knows me reasonably well through coursework be better than having only two letters, assuming the programs require three? Or could the third letter actually weaken my application?

I'm starting to worry that my only option for the third letter could hurt my chances.

Engineering BS CS, MS EE, PhD ??

long story short I did BS in Math and Computer Science and "research" MS with thesis in electrical engineering all at the same large state school, USA. I can't help but feel like I'm so close to a PhD in the grand scheme of life. I wrote "research" because I feel like I am not great at research tbh I have a few conference papers at meh conferences. So I am just wondering do I try to continue at the same institution? Switch advisors? do I switch back to CS or Math for PhD instead of EE? different institution? Just wondering what the least painful option is. In an ideal world, I switch institutions to a more prestigious uni for a change of scenery (and name recognition), they count my masters towards the PhD at the new uni and I finish in an additional 2-3 years but I know that isn't really how it works. Just wondering if anyone had any advice. I'm assuming people will say something like "do whatever you want to do for work (just stop at masters instead of PhD for industry)" or "don't do a PhD for the prestige, do it for the love of research" which I already have heard many times and I know that. In addition, I worked with 1 PI yet every school wants like 3 LOR so like who else do you ask? just another prof you had a class with isn't that good from what I've heard. So yeah feeling a little lost and unsure of what the best move is.

Computer Sciences Funded PhD in USA vs. Thesis-Based Master's at University of Alberta (Canada) — Which Would You Choose for Career and PR?

I'm an international student from Nepal currently living in the USA. I've received two graduate admission offers, and I'm having a hard time deciding which one to choose.

Option 1: University of Alberta (Canada)

  • Thesis-based Master's in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE).
  • Opportunity to work with a highly reputed and experienced professor.
  • Top-ranked Canadian university with a strong research reputation.
  • Funding: CAD $22K/year, but around $13K goes toward tuition and fees, leaving only $8K–$9K for living expenses.
  • Approximately 2-year program, with opportunities to work part-time.
  • Potentially a more straightforward pathway to Canadian PR.

Option 2: University of South Carolina (USA)

  • PhD admission with tuition waiver and stipend.
  • Approximately 4–5+ years to complete.
  • Better financial support, but limited opportunities for outside employment.
  • Larger job market and potentially better salaries, especially in software engineering and AI/ML.
  • US green card process is much more uncertain.

My dilemma:

My ultimate goal is to obtain permanent residency in either country, although I would prefer a US green card. I've already completed my bachelor's degree in the USA and have around 3 years of professional experience in software engineering.

I'm leaning toward the USA because of its job market and career opportunities. However, spending another 5 years on a PhD without a clear immigration pathway concerns me.

Canada seems more promising for PR, and UAlberta offers an excellent research environment, but I'm worried about the limited funding and Canadian tech job market.

My questions:

  1. Which option would you choose considering PR, career opportunities, and financial stability?
  2. How difficult is it to find software engineering or AI/ML jobs in Canada after graduating from UAlberta?
  3. Is Canadian PR realistically easier than a US green card under current immigration policies?
  4. Would moving to Canada make it harder to return to the USA for work later?

I'd really appreciate advice from anyone who has faced a similar decision or has experience studying and working in either country.

Thanks!

General Advice rec letter writers

i am currently scoping out why to have write my third recommendation letter, as most programs i am applying to (information science phd & similar programs) require/request 3 letters. my first 2 letters will be from the 2 PIs i had as an undergrad.

during my senior year, i took a rather small, tight-knit course for students writing an honors thesis. i had the same professor the whole year, and she saw my project from inception to final write up, as well as the many steps in between. although she didn’t formally advise my thesis, she can definitely speak to my experience and potential as a researcher.

is this somebody i could/should consider for a recommendation, or should i consider finding a different recommendation for my third who has more formally advised me?

additionally, i spent some time working in the corporate sphere (in data consulting, a field tangentially related to what i will be pursing research on in graduate school) for 2 (maybe 3 pending on what cycle i actually end up submitting apps) years between my undergrad and when i will begin a phd. would a recommendation from someone at mr company be useful, or should i look strictly for academic writers?

Engineering MS vs PhD advice for Mech Eng

Hello, I am currently an undergraduate student at a US T5 engineering school majoring in Mechanical Engineering and I am conflicted between applying to MS and PhD. I ultimately want to pursue a PhD, but I feel like my profile is not strong enough and that I will need to strengthen it through an MS.

My main field is robotics, and my GPA is 3.5/4.0, which is not the most competitive. But I do have extensive research experience so far at 4 different labs, each for at least one year. I currently have a 2 first author papers and one co-author paper under review at flagship journals in my field.

What would you advise?

Physical Sciences Chemistry Grad Admissions

Hello!

I will be applying to Chemistry PhD programs this coming fall. I have a weak GPA (3.4 from a top 50 private university in the US), but I have been working in industry for 2.5 years now in a research role and have received a promotion from associate to full chemist. I am currently working on a grant-funded project and have made several faculty connections through networking opportunities, but I currently have no publications. There are multiple that are expected to come out of this project, but it is still in its early stages.

My GPA is weak, and I do not have any pubs, and I know that will hold me back in some places. I am wondering if I would be better served by applying direct entry to PhD programs, or if I should still go the masters route, despite my industry experience. Looking for anecdotes or experience from professors and past applicants.

Thank you!
