Not a fan of the egor Keon starting pair
Egor has looked ok to me this preseason he’s been more aggressive than last yr but he’s not getting enough consistent paint touches to justify still calling him a point guard. I’ve heard people say the nets are considering bringing Mikel off the bench to start as a ramp up. Whether that’s true or not I think one of Mikel or Nolan needs to be in that starting lineup come opening night. The offense is going to struggle if it becomes too much of Julius Randle being the only true creator to keep the defense honest. You need another guy to be able to breakdown the defense especially in the half court and egor nor keon is doing that consistently

Minnesota also had no pure point guard with randle. And they got to the conf finals. Its a feature not a bug. Randle playstyle rather stacks well with players like egor.
Our offense been killing it in this games with a very good flow and people are dooming that its not working 😂

People want egor to put up big numbers basically. He is not shooting well from 3 or at the rim but his improved ball handling and strength imo is showing up in his passing. 14 assists and 4 turnovers is great.

No I want him to be aggressive. Simply looking at the box score is overshadow the issue. He disappears from possessions and becomes too passive. He needs to be cutting and moving and finding spots to help move the offense more

Guys, for a team like the Nets where it is about growth first, then wins, the starting lineup at start of season needs to follow some rules. First, rookies should earn the starting position. Second, give the new vet some love and respect to start the season. You are probably going to cut their minutes later for the young guys. So Keon and Egor makes a ton of sense. Then Mikel takes the role from Keon after proving it in regular season games.

No it doesn’t bc if we’re talking about warning spots Nolan has been better

I wouldn’t over react to three pre season games where Brown wasn’t even available. Plus if Traore keeps balling out then this will all fix itself

Stop. It’s not an overreaction. Egor hasn’t been consistently aggressive since his rookie yr it’s a valid criticism and concern

I’ll say it again. I’m hoping future starting/finishing lineup consists of Nolan/MBJ/Egor
I think nets FO envision this too.

I’d rather have Nolan if Mikel is out. He’s one of the 5 rookies we invested in last season. Plus we already know what Keon has to offer and for this team. That’s a Bruce Brown style of bench role

This point guard stuff isn't that important offensively I think. The offense is centered around Randle and Sharpe/Wagner's DHO. Dëmin needs those reps with the ball to be better. It's not like Jordi is giving him full green light to play spread pick and rolls.

I think it’s actually a good fit because Keon helps to compensate for the defensive deficiencies of the other players in the lineup.
Also, within the Randle-led offense, Ellis’ job is to get him the ball in the mid-to-high post and work the perimeter for open looks from 3. There was a play last night where he did exactly this, and since Randle drew a double team, he was able to get a nice catch and shoot opportunity from three.
I think it’s worth noting that none of the guard minutes are set in stone, and that Jordi will use the competition to get the best out of Nolan/Mikel/Egor/Ellis.

You cannot have one person on the team that’s able to create advantages in the starting lineup that makes your offensive game plan far too predictable

I don’t think it’s the worst thing to be predictable. Most teams are like that anyway.
I could see the lack of advantage creation being an issue for sure, so hopefully NT and Mikel are able to absorb a good amount of the guard minutes eventually since they seem to be able to get paint touches and create advantages for the players around them.

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted in this thread but you’re absolutely right. I bought into the hype of Egor offseason improvements. He made some but last night was an eye opener to what he was the majority of his rookie season and if Kyshawn George defense made him revert back to being the player that just waits for a Kickout what does that say when he sees real defenders?

Just take a deep breath. He is getting downhill a lot better. He has 13 assists and 4 turnovers in his 3 games. He’s had some nice dimes as well.
Reminder that he’s the same age as Mikel brown and also 20. I’ve seen very solid improvement in his ball handling even if he still struggles with ball pressure. Let’s give him some more time to continue working.

I dont think it's even Keon who's him having issues with, I think it's the pairing of MPJ and Randle because both are ball-dominant/end of the possession players that once you give it to them you likely won't get the ball back.
This team needs a really good facilitator that MPJ and Randle don't need to ISO. Someone like a Jokic that knows where his teammates are.

u/No_Engineer2203 20h ago
What? MPJ isn’t ball dominant at all. If he gets the ball he’s either driving or launching a 3. Randle has held the ball more bc ever cannot create. Egor has to be more aggressive

Even if it doesn’t stay with him long, the possession ends with him when swinging it around might lead to a better percentage shot. Right now it’s fine because he’s scoring at a decent clip but later when the season starts and teams start taking defense seriously, he’s gonna get trapped and doubled.

I don’t see it that way, I actually think Egor fits well with Randle who’s shown to be a willing passer and is the hub this season instead of Clax, and MPJ who barely dribbles but his shotmaking demands attention from opposing defenses. Egor is gonna get a lot of open looks this season, he’s just missing shots right now and he needs to be more aggressive. I do think he will benefit more from playing next to MBJ or Nolan rather than Ellis.

Even if we had mikel or Nolan it would be a similar situation... Like we knew this was going to happen when we traded for Randal he averaged 5 assist last season lol...

Nolan has more of a future at point than Egor. Egor doesn't or won't pass great.

u/airstevejobs 19h ago
Letting Egor be the 6 man and be the alpha in the second unit would do wonders.

This is why I think the nets made a mistake not bringing in a veteran point guard

If they opt not to start the season with Mikel in the starting lineup, I'd prefer they give Egor a chance and let him fail rather then immediately take away his point guard reps.
