Discussion Why is nobody talking about EndeavourOS?

Honestly, EndeavourOS is one of the smoothest and fastest Linux distros I’ve ever used.

I’m surprised I don’t see more people talking about it on YouTube.

Is there a reason it’s not as popular as other distros? Or am I just looking in the wrong places?

What do you guys think?

cause there is a million linux distros

I too really like EndeavourOS. I think some of the issue is that it's a small group running it, who have lives, and things have slowed down on updates and releases. I'm always wondering if EOS is going to be the next distro to stop being supported.

I really hope not as there is a great community around it.

I currently use a small-ish distro with a small developer group too, when the main dev disapearred years ago the other devs & community did a takeover lol, as long as there's a loyal community behind a FOSS project it will live.

u/linux_rox 9h ago

Endeavour is a rebrand of Antergos after the main dev for Antergos decided to retire it. So mods and community members continued it on as EndeavourOS.

I liked EndeavourOS too, but for this same reason I ended up back on Ubuntu. For smoothest, that’s the only one.

There's not much to talk about; it's simple in a good way.

EOS is very good for what it is, but it occupies a weird niche where I don't think there are a lot of users, so I think it's always going to be pretty small.

Just because it's easy to install doesn't mean it's a good choice for beginners. Once it's installed, you're still expected to maintain an arch-based distro that is nearly identical to arch with a few things pre-configured. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone scared of using the terminal.

CachyOS is very similar, has stronger branding as a gaming distro, and I think ships with some quality of life software that makes things a little easier for beginners. It's hard to see EOS being recommended as a gaming distro, even though gaming on EOS works pretty well as far as Linux gaming goes.

People who wanna feel self-important about using Arch are probably just gonna use Arch, even though EOS is pretty similar post-installation. "I use EndeavourOS btw" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

So who's left? People who feel comfortable using Arch, or something like it, but just want an easier installation process (and don't care that it isn't vanilla Arch). Doesn't seem like a very broad appeal, and some of those users will be transient because they're here to dip their toe into the Arch-based distros, and may either move on to vanilla Arch or away to something like Debian or Fedora.

Exactly my case. A office worker, with a old notebook and a new PS5.

I just want a fast distro that runs some Excell sheets, some automations, and 15 Firefox tabs smoothly.

No gaming needed. Knowing how Terminal works. Breaking things sometimes because want to improve. But don't have time to deal with Arch every reinstall process.

And EOS is perfect for that.

A few years ago EndeavourOS was the popular Arch based distro on "linuxtube" and everyone talked about it, just like Manjaro used to be in the late 2010's before it literally ddossed the whole AUR. Nowadays the top (as in more popular) Arch based distros are slopmarchy and Cachy.

Everything is a fad up there, whatever brings 1000+ bullshit features everyday will get more views and likes, if something's stable and simple it won't sell there.

This subreddit and the forum are examples of how this distro is still used.

1

u/proderis 1d ago

What is telling you that Omarchy and Cachy are the top Arch distros?

4

u/Runt1m3_ 1d ago

Fixed my comment lol, i mean they are the most popular nowadays.

Omarchy is currently being sponsored by major companies and getting huge advertising on youtube linux channels, Cachy is getting very popular as a gaming distro and it's a fine distro.

I switched to Cachy for the better Nvidia support. EOS has all the same drivers of course but there was little glitches all over the place that always stemmed back to some NVidia s#!t it was either migrate, or spend ALL my time squashing bugs.

It's not anything particularly earthshattering compared to EOS or Arch, obv gamescope is as broken as ever, but my login screen is no longer trying to give me a seizure. Plus little things like hosting precompiled drivers on their server so updates don't take an eternity.

Maybe when I can afford to upgrade to a better AMD card and driver compatibility becomes a thing of the past I'll move back to EoS. There's a few things they do that I don't like and EoS has a way better color scheme.

u/KnightFallVader2 1d ago

It's not that majorly different from Arch. Some people say it's not really necessary anymore since archinstall exists and has gotten a lot better, but I still think EndeavourOS has some use cases like with ARM64 devices (Stock Arch is only AMD64)

u/sparky5dn1l 1d ago

I have been using EOS for over 3 years as my daily driver. The advantage of EOS is its cleanliness. It is stable and close to the original Arch repo. No bull shit out of the box. Maybe that's why it is not much to talk about.

8

u/OhHaiMarc 1d ago

No idea I don’t follow YouTubers. I feel like it’s a well known distro. Maybe not sponsored by your favorite YouTuber ?

8

u/His_Turdness 1d ago

Terminal-centric. That's probably the biggest thing. Cachy is probably the better option for a new Linux user and for a more experienced user the distro doesn't really matter.

I stick with EOS because of the helpful community.

u/ApplicationMaximum84 1d ago

Still 10th most searched for on distrowatch, so it's still doing pretty well in the grand scheme of things.

u/sumguypookie 22h ago

In short, people who are using EndeavourOS are using it and many aren't content creators. Understand, content creators have to keep trying the latest and greatest to keep the content coming into their channel. And because there are rarely any major upgrades to EOS, because they have a smoother upgrade path that you really don't need to reinstall the software, for many creators it's not much news, so it doesn't get as wide coverage.

9

u/ConsiderationRare217 1d ago

Because it's just boring as it just works. People like exciting stuff that breaks 😕

6

u/atlasraven 1d ago

It's a hidden secret. It's not pushed like Cachy or Mint because it's not as specialized. It just works well in general. For people with a little expertise and a little patience.

u/CZTachyonsVN KDE Plasma 1d ago

EOS walked so CachyOS can run. I was on EOS until CachyOS was mature enough to replace it as an easy Arch distro that works out-of-the-box.

3

u/enomad51 1d ago

Well, it's quite popular in this subreddit :)

3

u/SuAlfons 17h ago

EOS is a well-known distro with those in search for Arch derivates.

Between here and the EndeavorOS forums, there is a lot of talk.

Currently it's CachyOS that gets recommended to freshmen a lot. Before it was Manjaro. EndeavorOS was there all the time.

u/driftless 1d ago

YouTube isn’t the real world. Based on YouTube and social media, cachy or bazzite runs the world, when in reality most folks are on Ubuntu, Debian, fedora and arch.

These alternative distros are a dime a dozen, but there are decent “based on” distros that make Linux really fun, and because they work without issue (mint and endeavouros) we don’t really hear much about them.

2

u/Brilliant_Estate_967 1d ago

The it just works slogan is to little

2

u/elijuicyjones 1d ago

It’s too rough for beginners to be popular with YouTube listicles.

Its too practical to be exciting for YouTube listicles.

See the theme here?

2

u/Solid_Guess_7154 1d ago

Because it doesn't really have much to offer against other distros that already did the same thing for a long while now? it's just a niche sidegrade

2

u/StandardAd1864 1d ago

Is it EOS that's fast, or just Arch? Since the arrival of archinstall, I don't see the point of EOS it just adds another dependency. But I might be wrong

2

u/npc_housecat 1d ago

Arch. EOS is just arch with a GUI installer and a few qol tools.

2

u/Bob4Not 1d ago

I used it a couple years ago. Its role is to give people an easy Arch install, right? Most people who want an easy arch install go to CachyOS, plus they contributes a few additional tools and tweaks. People who want to do their own arch will build Arch. That leaves us here that like EOS to have an easy vanilla Arch.

Bro you need to get some cooler friends. All my friends talk about EndeavourOS.

What's that? I forgot to take my meds again? Oh yeah, I don't have friends.

1

u/Lonely-Scarcity-3387 1d ago

I’d like to answer your question with another question.

As an outsider, all I know about EndeavorOS, is that “it’s Arch with an easy installer”.

So is that accurate? Or is there more to the distro? I’m genuinely asking because that’s all I ever heard, and that wasn’t enough to entice me to look any further.

1

u/linux_rox 9h ago

It's arch with an installer and some QOL tools like firewall, ssh, yay and a couple other small programs that most people using arch would install anyway. It also had some systems timers pre-set like fstrim, paccache.timer and some others. And of course theming.

1

u/Both_Cup8417 1d ago

Too "boring" for a YouTuber (although I think Juxtopposed used it in a video once)

1

u/tekjunkie28 1d ago

It’s a great distro.

1

u/dosenscheisser 1d ago

Nothing special about it really or is there? I mean i can also just install arch with archinstall and get the same experience no?

1

u/Synthetic451 1d ago

Heh? Pretty sure its one of THE definitive Arch-derivatives at this point, so its talked about plenty. Youtube creators just move on pretty fast to whatever is "trendy" so they're not exactly a good measure of things.

In the Linux subreddit, anytime someone mentions Arch on easy mode, it's either CachyOS (the trendy one) or EndeavourOS (whenever people want to stick as close as they can to Arch). Endeavour itself got a big boost of attention after the death of Antergos.

1

u/No_Intention_5895 1d ago

i am also a distrohopper until i used EOS. currently running on my both work and personal machines.

1

u/xarop_pa_toss 1d ago

I've wondered this myself. I always see Cachy or other gaming focused distros, and stuff like Mint or just Arch recommended all the time in posts around reddit but I'm usually the only one recommending Endeavour.

I love it because it's so clean. It's Arch, has some nice amenities pre installed that I'd install anyway, and it's not "in my face" pushing it's own shit like Omarchy for example.

I always recommend endeavour as the "here's a great starting point, go have fun". And the community is legit helpful

1

u/spekxo 1d ago

I used it briefly after switching from Manjaro.

Liked the experience until two fatal crashes on the same machine with reinstall (Lenovo SFF i7, no special hardware and very linux compatible). I'd never go back. Ruined Arch for me forever.

1

u/RunRunRunRunFaster 1d ago

I settled on EndeavourOS last summer for all of my computers. Some hiccups (AUR hacked, kernel update kills broadcom wifi, really hard to install on a 12" 2015 macbook retina) along the way, but I'm still using it.

1

u/Ok_Farm_1026 23h ago

It hiccupped on me during an upgrade. Switched to MX Linux over 2 years ago.Still dual boot it occasionally. It is 10 seconds slower to boot on my T460 than MX. Both distros running on KDE. MX just works better

1

u/Puzzled_Hamster58 23h ago

I liked it but switch to cachyOS mostly because I had to redo my laptop and cachyOS includes fixes made by Asus Linux org, so I had less setup work after install .

u/moendopi2 20h ago edited 20h ago

My guess is exactly for all the reasons you mentioned. The internet and YouTube are an attention economy. When was the last time you heard much about Fedora? Or Tuxedo?

I've been running Endeavour for a while now and I basically have no complaints. It's done basically nothing weird, everything basically works, aside from that "scare" over the AUR a while back, there's nothing to talk about.

My laptop runs Fedora KDE (Nvidia GPU + Intel) and my desktop Endeavour with KDE (all AMD). They both just work, and that's boring. You can't make engagement bait or rage bait around boring things that just work. No one gets exciting about a Toyota Corolla or an old Ford Focus, but I think most of us can appreciate their reliability and lack of stupid/weird/persistent problems. It works when you need it. Not much else to say.

My desktop ran OpenSuse Tumbleweed for a while and I got weird update issues, got update lock outs, had to do rollbacks because of weird kernel issues. Moved to Ultramarine, which is nice, but it was basically Fedora but bluer. Eh. So, I decided to go back to Endeavour, but no Nvidia bullshit, and it's given me no issues.

Also, since the installer streamlines things, you don't to flex and Lord over everyone in the comments section. It is a thing I lament everyday, but, c'est la vie.

1

u/Signalrunn3r 17h ago

Because it exist this thing called CachyOS, that does roughly the same, and then some.

1

u/mapmd1234 16h ago

Personally speaking I tried it per the recommendation of a friend of mine, Absolutely loved it, but then came to realize it physically did not have drivers that I needed for networking for a hundred gig project so I ended up having to move to Ubuntu, really freaking liked it, but if it doesn't have drivers, it doesn't have drivers, and trying to make them from source code did not work because apparently the source code is woefully out of date and requires sub requirements that just don't exist in the version that they need to be able to compile it from source, there was no work around other than switching to different distro

1

u/xiloxilox 11h ago

Isn’t EndeavourOS just Arch with some nice themes, GUI installer, and some QOL tools? My understanding is that EOS is still pulling from Arch repos without any “middleman” so no holding packages or whatever.

Based on that, there’s probably a point where there isn’t much to do except update themes and maybe address whatever issues there are in the install scripts.

I use EOS personally since after the nth arch install you kinda get the point and the novelty wears off a bit, but I’ve always had it as “arch Linux install fast” in my head. Maybe I’m wrong thinking this way and need to jump back to Arch lol (I know they have a GUI installer but I haven’t used it)

1

u/Ambivert_Guy_28 11h ago

I used to use EndeavourOS alot before CachyOS.

1

u/rnmissionrun 9h ago

It's great. I used it on my desktop for a while before the computer finally died. I replaced the desktop with a laptop, so I decided to go with a more lightweight distro. To be honest I'm not sure that Fedora Plasma is in any way lighter, but it's what I'm using now.

1

u/Ok-Network-4239 4h ago

On YouTube the Linux reviewers only care about gaming and video editing.

1

u/hsuyucheng-tw 2h ago

I use EndeavourOS, which means I can get help from the Arch Linux community when troubleshooting issues. However, for any questions related to CachyOS, the Arch Linux team directs users to the CachyOS forums.

1

u/BrockLV 1d ago

I have been distro hopping since the 90's and I stopped when I found Endeavour last year. I like it so much I even removed the dual boot windows and only run Endeavour now.

0

u/keepcalmandmoomore 1d ago

It's just arch Linux with extra flavour and compatibility checks.

I run archinstall, then copy some hyprland dotfiles and good to go.
