SOLVED Current Drivers Not Working with Radeon RX 7900 XT in KDE

Hi everyone,

Not sure what's going on and hoping to find some help. I've tried searching the Arch Wiki and elsewhere and haven't found anyone else having this issue.

About a month ago, I booted into EOS and did an update (eos-update). I'm running KDE and have a Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card, and using Wayland.

After the update, I could get to the login screen, but after entering my credentials, the screen went blank. I was able to get to a TTY and reboot, but couldn't resolve the issue.

I tried a variety of things I could think of like downgrading Mesa drivers, but nothing helped.

Eventually, I just gave up and reinstalled EOS. While I could launch EOS from the boot drive and everything seemed to look fine there, after installation, the login screen wouldn't even load. I could again get to a TTY, but couldn't force KDE to launch. I tried using the EOS LTS kernel as well, but no dice.

Finally after messing around with that, I installed CachyOS, just to have *something* I can use. In the latest update, CachyOS encounters the exact same issue, but the CachyOS LTS kernel gets me into KDE. I haven't tried any other DEs.

Is this a known issue for the current kernel in Arch? Is it likely this will be fixed in a future update? I'm just at a loss as to where to go from here other than just wait for a new driver update. Thanks for any help!

Edit: Solved. Just needed to wait for an update. I updated today and everything is working fine, at least in CachyOS. I'll probably go back to EOS soon with the updated drivers and such, and I'll be sure to use Timeshift so this doesn't happen again.

I'm running EOS and I'm 100% up-to-date. I've got no such issues. Not much help, I know.

I have a Sapphire 7900 XTX Vapor-X, it's working fine. I would look at the journalctl logs and whatnot and see if something stands out.

Do you happen to use any sddm theme other than breeze? No joke, I had a similar issue just the other day and for some reason my sddm theme was the culprit. If you can, change the sddm theme to standard breeze and see if that helps.

I imagine the hours of frustrating troubleshooting to find that one...

The fact I found the cause to begin with still boggles my mind, because it shouldn't have anything to do with that, but somehow that (seemingly) fixed it

I now wonder what the breeze theme has that the others don't, or vice versa! Do the other teams maybe have a dependency of some sort that Breeze doesn't? How would that even break the DE though

my issues were SO weird, too - like, I have my TV hooked up to the PC, right? Obviously, my TV isn't always on at the same time as my PC is, but every now and again I like to kick back on the couch and play a game on the big screen, so I just mirror my main monitor on it. So far so good, never been an issue. Then one day, after an eos-update, my daughter was watching something on the TV and when she turned it off, my entire PC crashed and rebooted. Same behaviour when I turned the TV back on, only it occasionally had issues even loading into sddm, at one point it showed up with the vanilla theme, which luckily pointed me towards the theme I was using at the time being a possible culprit (granted, I did not expect it to be, but I was running out of ideas), and LO AND BEHOLD .... I still have no clue how that's possibly connected, but after that one update I didn't change anything else, and I haven't had any of those issues since. It's really bizzarre, because as you said, how would that even break the DE?

And yet here we are.

I didn't change it at all. Do EOS and CachyOS change the standard SDDM theme? It would be the same with both the current and LTS kernels right?

To my understanding, neither change the standard SDDM theme, but I'm not sure about that. And yes, obviously the kernel doesn't change either.

Welp, I'm out of ideas sadly - I was just chucking an idea out there since I had a similar issue very recently, also on an all AMD build. Sorry that I couldn't be of more help =/

No worries, thanks for weighing in!

I actually faced the same and had Claude troubleshoot it. On my case it seemed to be HDR that was the culprit. Disabling it lead to me being able to login again. Couple of updates later and HDR is working just fine.

If I recall correctly Claude even identified it as being a know bug in a certain KDE/kernel constellation.

Maybe this helps you, maybe your problem is completely different. But I am using EOS and a 7900XT as well.

Tbh that sounds like a DE problem since your login screen works fine. What do the journalctl logs say?
