Etsy Do people actually buy expensive patterns?

Post image

I do embroidery and I'm pretty skilled at this technique called thread painting and I want to make patterns of it.

There are 3 issues I'm thinking about:

-It takes waaaay too long to make a pattern.

- I'm afraid that when people see that they would think they can't do it.

- AI patterns taking over embroidery.

I'm in many embroidery groups on fb and I see most people using the cheapest kits.

Do people buy expensive patterns? especially in this economy (I'm in the US) when I say expensive digital patter I mean above 15$.

Disclaimer: the piece in the picture is not mine.

I do, but it needs to be something I know I can't already do myself. I need the sample images to show me enough that I know I can actually do the finished object from it too. Too many embroidery patterns now are just the outline and colour suggestions. If it's intricate and thread painting designed for learners, more is needed imo. Not just "Trace this and then figure it out" which I see a lot of now. Bought too many patterns that ended up being so bare bones they were useless ie. showed specific stitches on the piece but don't mention any of them in the instructions, no technique terminology to look up, no suggested colour order to achieve certain looks.

Yea I agree and that's exactly my intention. When I was learning the technique the books I read always felt they were skipping steps (and very crucial ones somehow).

I've bought books that are just one pattern for crochet for upwards of $30.00. If I think I'll make it more than once, it's definitely worth it.

Yep. I sell quilting patterns at around 45aud (detailed fpp designs) and people buy them and sometimes buy a bunch at once.

Omg your patterns are phenomenalllll! I've always disliked quilting because all I ever saw in my life was ugly granny square quilts.

Thank you so much. I was the same with quilting then I found fpp by accident and fell down the rabbit hole lol.

Honestly if you have the time do the patterns you never know where it’ll lead you. And keep me updated id love to see your work ❤️

I dont embroider, but i do other thread based crafts - if im aware the pattern is clear + good quality and its not something I'm able to do myself or otherwise, I might! It would also have to be something I intend to make multiple times though, because if I only make it once it likely wouldnt be worth the price

I would not pay $15+ for a pattern

Yes, some people do. You'd want a marketing plan that can successfully put your advertisements directly in the hands of those buyers.

Yes I wrote a very comprehensive 3D embroidery pattern and it worked out all right.

Your art is so beautiful! I don't think it was just luck.

Thank you I appreciate it! But lots of amazing art goes unnoticed too, sometimes it’s how the internet goes unfortunately
