Flooring Is there a way to remove 15+ year old nail polish from wooden floors.

Hello. I'm visiting my parents apartment where I grew up for the week. They are older and I'm enjoying cleaning up what I can. Come across this stain. When I was a teenager I angrily threw a burgundy nail polish bottle at the floor and it's looked like this. I feel bad for my mom because she likes keeping house clean but both parents have difficulty asking building to replace floor or make other necessary repairs. All I can do is clean what I can. She places this exercise bike to cover the stain. It is hardwood, and some coating. Is there any way to clean this old stain up without more damage or floor replacement. Thanks.

I want to help them declutter their house and this may be a first step. To get the bike out of the way of this hallway. It looks ugly and in the way.

The parallel wall is a linen closet so it can't go there.

Last frame is what "clean' floor looks like

Tools/Equipment Finally stopped using canned air on my keyboard

Got sick of just blowing pet hair and crumbs deeper under my keys or making a dust storm that just lands back on my monitors anyway.

Decided to try vacuuming instead and grabbed a k&f concept mini vac to test out. Honestly... way better. The little brush knocks the dust loose and it actually sucks it up instead of just moving it around And the led light on the front its completely exposes how gross the dark gaps between the keys actually are lol😅

What do you guys use to clean out the tight spaces on your boards?

Laundry Give me all your laundry hacks/tips!

I have severe adhd, and am now unmedicated. I went through a little episode and fell wayyy behind on laundry besides for washing what we immediately need. We’re a larger family with small children. I have 4 large baskets of laundry to fold, and about 10 loads to do. 4 baskets of mostly small kids clothes (lots of outgrown ones) feels like a massive obstacle but it’s gotta get done because I’m tired of not being able to find anything since school has started lol

Discussion How often do you guys clean your windows to keep them looking nice?

I recently moved into a house with floor-to-ceiling windows and they take a bit more upkeep than I expected. I'm trying to figure out how often I should clean them to keep them looking nice without having to wipe them down all the time.

For those of you with large windows, how often do you clean them? Once a month, every few months, or just whenever they start looking dirty?

Flooring Need some floor cleaning tips or product recommendations

So we’ve been living in this apartment for about a year and a half now. It is an old basement apartment (I think it was built in the 40s) and when we moved in, it wasn’t the cleanest place in the world (but hey it’s only $800/mo). For the first while we lived here, I would mop and assume the floors were clean. I had no signs of them being gross otherwise. We now have a crawling baby and whenever she crawls on the kitchen floor, her hands and knees are stained almost black. I was disgusted and have been trying harder to get these floors fully clean but nothing I do seems to work. I’ve been mopping and sweeping more frequently. I tried using less fabuloso in my mop bucket. I tried using a vinegar solution my grandma recommended. Nothing really seems to fix it.

I’ve mopped twice this week with vinegar and fabuloso, on top of making sure my bucket and mop were fully rinsed clean. I then went over it with a swiffer just to see how it looked and this is how it came away looking (after only half the hall/kitchen too!) I have no idea what else to try. Any tips or products I should try? I don’t want my baby to get all dirty and/or sick from crawling into the kitchen on occasion.

Laundry PSA: Don’t use clarifying shampoo for stains

Friend staying over had a small stain on 2 of her shirts. I’d asked her to use shout (think she forgot) and she used my clarifying shampoo to wash the stains out before throwing the shirts in the washer. As a curly hair girl, I use my clarifying shampoo around once a month- it’s made to completely strip your hair of products and buildup

She took them out the dryer to see that both shirts had a dull blue stain exactly where she had used the clarifying shampoo. No other clothes had any stains. I knew that once the dryer heat sets a stain it’s a lost cause but decided as a last ditch effort to use shout on the dull blue areas. Sadly didn’t work :(

TLDR: don’t use clarifying shampoo to remove stains cause you risk stripping the fabric and leaving it open to other colors in the wash. Also, don’t throw any stained clothes in the dryer before you’ve fully washed it out cause the dryer sets stains

Laundry Vintage oilcloth purse stained from inside. I thought the back was unleashed cotton!

Help please! My oilcloth purse is stained from the inside. Water got in and it looks as though a dye ran. I thought it was unbleached cotton! To confirm I tried dabbing at it with a barely damp cloth and the water spread a faint stain.

Is there any way to fix it? A magically gentle bleach that won’t lighten the paint on the other side? Am willing to put in work.

A catch: I can’t turn it inside out.

Thank you!

i’ve had adhesive residue stuck on my floor for months after moving a dresser with felt footpads that peeled off while sliding it. recently used alcohol wipes to clean adhesive off a ceramic surface and thought i found the solution to my floor problem. tried it and ended up with these white stains. then tried using water just to wipe this away and it didn’t work. is there anything else i can try or am i looking at a more expensive issue now?

General Cleaning How to clean the room to remove smell of ?gas/chemicals

Hi

I have posted here previously. Finally found out where the smell is coming from thats making the house uninhabitable. 2 rooms are absolutely awful. Engineer came and said the radiators been corroded and needs changing and there is leakage below it.

The floor around it js terrible and there is leakage thar smells of chemical and is making me sick with headaches, eye irritation etc. Seems to have worsened since I used a steam mop to steam clean it.

Does anyone know how or what to clean jt with without making it worse?

Im not sure why the second room js so bad but the steaming has made it worse too. I dont wish to mask the smell with air freshener.. I would like advice on how to remove any leakages/chemicals from the air/floor etc.

Have used an air purifier about 2 hours a day in each room and kept the windows open

Tia

Before you ask- yes we bathe the dog regularly and yes we should never have gotten white furniture with kids and pets but here we are none the less. Our dog loves to rub against this footboard and over time he has left his mark. We’ve tried the little green machine, vacuuming, it doesn’t come out. Any tips welcome and appreciated!!

General Cleaning I need to clean today — how can I turn a four hour job into two?

I’m looking around my house and I see children’s books that are in good condition but don’t fit in the small bookshelf, and I don’t want more bookshelves. I see a toy basket that’s overflowing that the kids never use but won’t let me throw anything away. I see clothes that don’t fit in the drawers. I see stuff everywhere, and I want to have empty space, I think I read somewhere that it’s called the margin rule, so like everything should have a margin around it. I feel defeated and I haven’t even started.

Furniture How to whiten/brighten sherpa furniture?

Hello! I recently purchased a white sherpa accent chair on facebook marketplace, only to find that. it has a lot more stains/discoloration than what the pictures showed. I got it for cheap, so I really want to brighten/whiten it myself instead of getting something else. I have gone over it with my Little Green Machine a few times, which extracted a lot of dirt, but I still feel like there are a lot of spots that look darker and dirty. How can I clean this best? Can it be bleached? Any tips are appreciated!

I have this green on the handles of the door within the house, tried using lime + salt and rubbed one side, though it seems to get it darkened.

Photos are of one side who's the one I treated and got darkened and the other, untreated, side.

I'm not sure about the material of the handle, though it might be Nickel.

Organization Quick tip for packing away your summer duvet/comforter: Use dryer sheets to prevent that musty storage smell

Now that autumn is here, it’s time to swap out the summer duvet for the winter one. If you want yours to actually smell fresh when spring rolls around, here’s a quick checklist for storing it properly:

  1. Spot clean first: Hit any visible stains with a standard fabric stain remover before washing.
  2. Don't cram it in your home machine: Most domestic washers can't handle a double, king, or super king duvet without straining the motor or failing to rinse properly. Head to a laundrette for the big commercial machines and follow the care label.
  3. Make sure it’s 100% bone dry: Seriously, even a hint of residual moisture will turn into mildew or mold over a few months.
  4. The dryer sheet trick: Before sealing the storage bag, drop two dryer sheets inside. It keeps the fabric from developing that stale, stagnant storage scent so it’s ready to use straight out of the bag next season.

Super simple, cheap, and makes a huge difference.
