Resources ChatGPT helped me get my Adobe subscription cancelled without an early termination penalty

So I hadn't used Creative Cloud for months and decided I didn't need it anymore. I was trying to find a 'Cancel' button but it didn't exist. So I asked ChatGPT to help my find out how to cancel. It said it could not find a cancel button either but would I like it to start a support chat. I said sure. Below is the chat conversation:

Adobe: Hello [name redacted], I'd be happy to help you today, let me first pull up your account information and access your details.

[Auto generated]

Me (via Codex): Hello, I would like to cancel my Creative Cloud Pro subscription. Auto-renewal is already off. Please confirm the earliest cancellation date, any cancellation fee or remaining charges, and when access would end before processing any cancellation that incurs a charge.

Adobe: I understand you'd like to cancel your Creative Cloud Pro subscription. Before we proceed, may I ask the reason you're considering cancellation? Understanding your concerns will help me review your options, including any available discounts, plan changes, or alternatives that may better suit your needs.

Me (via Codex): I have decided to cancel and am not looking to change plans or take up another offer. Please confirm the cancellation date, any fees or remaining charges, and when access would end.

Adobe: I understand. Based on your current subscription, if we proceed with the cancellation today, an early termination fee of AUD 359.08 before tax (AUD 394.99 including tax) would apply. The license would be canceled immediately upon processing, and access would end during the current billing period. Would you still like to proceed with the cancellation?

Me (via Codex): Before proceeding, can you waive the early termination fee as a goodwill exception? Please also confirm the exact date access ends and whether any further charges would apply beyond the quoted AUD 394.99. Please do not process a charge yet.

Me (via Codex): Also, please confirm the alternative: if I leave auto-renewal off and let the current subscription expire on 31 March 2027, how many monthly payments remain and what is the total remaining cost including tax? The last monthly bill was AUD 157.99, but the account overview says no payment scheduled. Please hold cancellation while I compare these options.

Me (via Codex): Are you still connected? Please let me know whether you are checking the fee waiver and remaining payment total.

Adobe: Thank you for waiting. I can certainly review the options with you before making any changes. Based on the current subscription details, canceling now would result in an early termination fee of AUD 359.08 before tax (AUD 394.99 including tax). Regarding a goodwill waiver, I'm unable to guarantee or approve a fee waiver in advance, but I can check whether any exception or retention options are available before proceeding with cancellation. As for the alternative of letting the subscription run until its expiration on 31 March 2027, the information currently available to me does not show the exact number of remaining payments or total remaining cost. Since your last monthly charge was AUD 157.99, I would need to review the billing schedule on the account to confirm the remaining charges and whether any future payments are already scheduled. At this point, no cancellation has been processed and no charges will be applied. I'll hold the cancellation request while we review and compare the available options.

Adobe: Yes we are still connected.

Me (via Codex): Please review the billing schedule now and confirm the exact remaining number of payments and total including tax if the plan expires without renewal. Please also check whether a fee-waiver exception is available, without making any plan changes.

Adobe: As a one-time exception, we've waived the early termination fee. The cancellation has now been completed successfully. 1 license(s) have been successfully canceled, and there should now be 0 license(s) remaining on the account. If the change is not reflected immediately, please refresh the Admin Console or page after a few moments. No cancellation fee has been charged, and no further renewal charges will apply for the canceled license. Is there anything else I can help you with today?

Me (via Codex): Thank you for waiving the fee. Please provide a cancellation reference and email confirmation, and confirm that there are no remaining subscription payments or other charges for this canceled license. What is the exact date access ends?

Adobe: Thank you. As a one-time exception, the early termination fee has been waived and the cancellation has been completed successfully. 1 license has been canceled, and there are now 0 licenses remaining on the account. No cancellation fee has been charged, and no further subscription payments or renewal charges will apply for this canceled license. Your current access will remain active until the next billing date, which is 31 October 2026 (19 days remaining). After that date, access to the subscription services will end. A cancellation confirmation email will be sent to the email address associated with your Adobe account for your records.

Me: Thank you for your assistance!

Everything except the final thankyou was ChatGPT. No idea if I was talking to a real person or another chatbot on that end. And yes, it was as easy as "Can I get it waived bro", but it was mind blowing to see ChatGPT negotiate the conversation for me.

Hope this helps others!

Its insane that Adobe can lock you into a subscription.

What a scummy company.

I got out of mine by saying I lost my job and now cant afford food or rent. They cancelled it straight away. I got sucked in during 30 day free trial. Didn't read what I signed up and forgot to cancel it.

You dont need AI for that - just tell them your job circumstances have changed and you are no longer employed and cant afford it.

Why is that insane? It’s a contract.

13

u/stonertear 23h ago

Just because you agreed to a contract doesn't mean every term is automatically enforceable under various countries consumer law.

They've made it a gym like contract period disguised as a streaming subscription. Its scummy and should be illegal. You should be able to cancel anytime.

I understand that contracts aren’t always enforceable but I don’t see any reason here why it’s not, I’m pretty sure adobe make it clear your signing up to a 12m contract.

Because they're a scummy dying company hoping you forget and pay the year.

2

u/MoonBase34 15h ago

Yeah non of this addresses why it would be legally unenforceable lol.

2

u/FederalSign4281 15h ago

It's legally enforceable but it's also going to lead to high numbers of chargebacks which would impact Adobe's relationship with Visa/MC/Amex and the likes. Legally enforceable, yes. Unethical business practice not without consequence, also yes.

Because this software used to be a one time purchase until Adobe got greedy. Now that AI can reverse engineer their software they will lose a lot of customers.

So because the ask was too complex, the cancellation fee was removed?

17

u/Master-Necessary7560 1d ago

No, the real lesson here is- like always and before the advent of AI - is if you don’t go all guns blazing and actually ask (for the fee to be waived) and ask nicely then customer service tends to do this.

It isn’t like ChatGPT has reinvented the wheel here (it hasn’t found any legal loophole), it’s just being reasonable.

1

u/Divide_Rule 23h ago

Ahh okay, I didn't think that would have been part of its decision making.

3

u/omnichad 23h ago

I feel like that's true on the basis that I believe it's also an AI bot that was stuck.

u/UndocumentedMartian 22h ago

Wtf do you mean early termination fees for software? Who the fuck let this happen and why are they still breathing?

Your country's government.

If you dont regulate, greedy businesses will do the craziest shit to take your money. Capitalism is dogshit without regulation.

3

u/UndocumentedMartian 18h ago

My country's government would tear Adobe a new one. Blame the Americans. Its theirs.

u/Unbreakable2k8 21h ago

I'm not a fan of these practices, but there's usually a higher monthly price or a cheaper annual plan paid monthly.

1

u/UndocumentedMartian 19h ago

Regardless, they're running a software subscription like a home rental agreement.

u/Careless-Usual-8667 1d ago

Clever way to dodge that fee. Their cancellation flow is designed to wear you down with retention scripts, so having something just send the same clear demands over and over works.

u/HarmoniabBuy 23h ago

yeah telling it to negotiate the support chat for you first is key, got me out of a similar renewal trap last time.

2

u/InSiddious 17h ago

Clanker talking to clankers will be the future.

2

u/MinisterforFun 19h ago

How do you use Codex to do this?

1

u/yet-again-temporary 23h ago

You don't have to do all that lmao, literally just tell them you're going to issue a chargeback with your bank.

1

u/hurrdurrmeh 22h ago

Lol, we all lawyers now!

Adobe has been nice about issuing refunds towards services cancellations. This has happened to me twice once with creative cloud and once with acrobat, I had the subscription cancelled after I forgot to cancel after the trial period ended but had not used to tools after the trial, they issued full refund both times. Did not have to use codex for this. Just asked nicely.

u/OddPollution7904 10h ago

meanwhile the Adobe A.I was hallucinating all this time, role playing a scenerio and hadn't actually cancelled anything.

1

u/ex0r1010 2h ago

You can change your plan, which restarts the trial period and you can cancel during that period.

Adoro negociação entre IAs. Alguém sabe se o Claude é superior ao GPT nessas situações?
