Questions Anyone else intentionally mispronounce things for your own amusement?

For example: Chipotle. I pronounce it CHUH-pot-tee, because the first time I had a burrito there, it gave me food poisoning! And for some reason, people get so worked up and always correct me! 😄

Any weirdos like me? What words are your favs to mispronounce?

When did being unreachable for a few hours become something we had to explain?

I find it kind of strange how being available all the time has become the default.

Someone texts you, you don't reply for a few hours, and suddenly there's this feeling that you owe them an explanation.

Not even talking about emergencies. Just ordinary messages.

We used to be able to disappear for an afternoon and nobody thought twice about it. Now your phone can basically testify against you. "You were online 17 minutes ago."

I'm not saying instant messaging is bad. It's just funny how we invented something to make communication easier and somehow made silence more complicated.

Do you think we've become too accessible, or is this just what being considerate looks like now?

Life Stories The time I decided to be more social and randomly tell 2 people they looked cute together

So, I went to a concert in Alberta a couple of months ago as part of my ongoing effort to force myself out of the house into events in which I may not usually feel comfortable.

Long story short, I was probably the only person there solo in a pretty cozy venue. A couple chatted me up a little and were very nice.

Now, the whole time, I was seeing 2 people standing together and chatting, enjoying the music, etc. The girl was very cute - like out of this world. The guy was handsome and dressed to impress.

I would normally have left them alone - I'm deathly afraid of approaching strangers. However, in line with my goal to be more social, I spent ~1 hour talking myself into walking up to them and being like, "Just wanted to say you two look so cute together!" I was like, "What is there to lose? Just be more social. Make people feel special. Get yourself out of your shell."

So I did it. There was a 5-second pause, and then they were like, "Sorry, what?" I felt uncomfortable but doubled down and repeated myself. They looked at each other, looked at me, tensed up, and stayed silent for a few seconds. She then looked at me (annoyed) and said, "We're coworkers." I was like, ".... Oh..... Uhhmm... Well, sorry about that." I then hurriedly scurried away.

I wanted to die.

Just Chatting I finally found a friend

• Upvotes

I moved to my uni from out of country and struggled with English for a while, feeling alienated.

I was different to the other girls and didn't really fit in.

But I adapted, studied hard, and learned the language. So yesterday, after classes were done, im talking to this girl in my class, and she invited me over to her dorm for drinks.

I'm going there tonight, and im so excited it feels so good not to be alone. So yeah, it made me smile. I hope it made you smile, too ❤️

I'm from Bayelsa, Nigeria and we call Batman "Ebewezy" - what does Batman mean in Ohio/Texas/California?

Hello everyone,

I'm from Bayelsa in Nigeria. In my Ijaw language, we call Batman "Ebewezy".

In Bayelsa we sometimes have no light at night, and no good roads. So for us, Ebewezy is not just a movie character. He is the idea that someone will bring justice when everywhere is dark.

I saw a comment from someone in Ohio today who said there are still many Batman fans there. That made me happy.

So my question: What does Batman mean where you live? Is it different in Ohio vs Texas vs California?

I have never been outside Nigeria, but I would love to understand how you see him in America.

Thank you for reading my story about Ebewezy.

Just Chatting I thought I'd outgrow fast food as an adult

• Upvotes

When I was a kid, I was so sure that grown-ups just naturally stopped craving things like burgers and fries, But as an adult, I'm still loving it. I go to Burger King or McDonald's, get my burger, fries and shake, and inhale them in minutes. Maybe my tongue refuses to grow up.

Life Stories Have you ever seen an old friend after a long time and it wasn't quite right anymore?

Apologies if this is "too serious", I'm unsure if the subreddit's rules allow this or not.

I briefly saw an old friend recently who I hadn't seen in a long, long time. It was good to see this friend again. But interestingly (or maybe not) it kind of felt like the old friendship was no longer alive. That's not for lack of trying, we talked and it was just fine. But it just kind of felt sort of "friendly casual" rather than any sort of deep friendship anymore. I could even tell my friend really wanted to dive back in, so I feel bad about not being able to. The issue is just that those days feel like a lifetime ago. In some ways I'm such a different person than I was back then, my life has taken many different paths, I've gone through different challenges, met various people, made totally new friends... I think who I was back in those days probably shaped a lot of our friendship, and it's harder for me to hold up my end now. At least, that's my suspicion. We're just further apart now in terms of where we're at in life than we were back then.

Anyway, this absolutely isn't meant to be a negative story, I do truly value that old friendship, but I just thought it was interesting how things can change over time and you can't necessarily just jump back into it. Has this ever happened to you?

Just Chatting anyone else find the weight of a heavy blanket oddly reassuring at night

sometimes when i cannot sleep i end up noticing the way a thick blanket presses down evenly on my legs and shoulders. it is not exactly warm or cool, just present, like a quiet reminder that the bed is still there. the slight resistance when i shift my feet feels steady instead of startling. i do not need the blanket to move or make any noise, just the way it sits there is enough. some nights the texture alone makes everything else seem farther away without me having to do anything special. not sure if that is common or just a habit i picked up, but i catch myself reaching for that same blanket whenever the evening starts to feel long.

Just Chatting Truly, how are you holding up today?

Often in everyday life, we don't really ask each other how we're truly doing or feeling. I wanted to put this post here as a safe space just to check in.

Feel free to use this to share whatever is on your mind. It can be good, it can be bad, a win, a failure, a happy memory, or just a quiet thought.

Truly, how are you holding up? Because I care :)

Thoughts & Ideas Would this be weird... Friendship business cards?

As an introvert, I've been trying hard to be more social when I'm out in public. My partner and I go out to places like concerts, festivals, etc often and meet people who could end up being friends... But it's hard and awkward to bring up the topic of "hey, want to exchange info and keep in touch?"

I was thinking about making little business cards that said something like...."hey, I think we might get along. If you'd like to chat more, hit me up!" I'd put my first name, and phone number or SnapChat handle on it. Maybe even my pic so they can remember who it was that gave it to them.

Would it be weird if someone you chatted with casually gave you one of these? Would you be turned off, or interested?

Life Stories It's weird growing up seeing two beauty standards

I don't know if this is an inmigrant thing or not, but as a female chinese inmigrant that grew up in Europe, I find myself feeling conflicted from time to time by the beauty standards I've been exposed to.

On one hand, I have the Asian, specifically chinese beauty standard. Think China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam... Pale skin, big eyes, small face, young appearance, slim body... That's what I grew up with in my household. I love watching cdramas and chinese celebrities, and frankly speaking, this is the beauty standard I gravitate more towards to.

But, because I grew up in Europe, specifically Spain, I've also been exposed to a more different kind of beauty standards; Sun-kissed skin, curves, sexy clothes that show off the skin, grown-up and more mature women...

It's a stark contrast against the asian beauty standards and whilst the asian ones are more appealing to me, I also see how the Spanish ones would be more preferable for some people.

So, where does the weird part come in? Well, it boils down to the comparison of these two beauty standards. For instance, there have been a couple times where I've heard non-asian people critique others who choose partners with a younger appearance (mostly directed to men, but could also be applied for women), saying that it feels wrong because they might as well be with a child.

I've also heard asian people (mostly aunties and the older generation) critique strangers for their choice of clothing. For example, if they have a huge breasts and are wearing something super tight and revealing, they'll just straight up say "Why is she wearing that, looks like she's about to flash everyone if she moves too much" or something fat-shaming (unfortunately, it's not uncommon).

I've listened to both sides and while I try my best to stay neutral and just understand both points of view, there are times when I feel conflicted. I mean, I prefer a more youthful face, so does that make me a bad person? If someone wants to wear revealing pieces, so long as it isn't public nudity, why should I care? Can't we just look the other way? But, I guess if there's really A TON of skin showing, then a tiny piece of fabric also doesn't really matter...? Idk.

I feel like I'm stuck in a weird tug of war between two sides that I can't choose. Pls, does anyone else understand the struggle? :(

Questions Does Anyone Else Have A Nostalgia Addiction?

• Upvotes

I feel like every chapter of my life is full of nostalgia for the previous one, I'm trying to be better about it but even now I still reminisce a lot. I take it well though, it just means I've had a life worth remembering and loving :)

What's something you thought was a weird personal quirk until you found out loads of people do it?

I recently found out that a surprising number of people rehearse phone calls before making them.

It got me wondering: what's something you've always thought was just a "you thing" until you mentioned it to someone and realised loads of people do it?

Those moments always make me question how many of my other habits are secretly normal.

Just Chatting Who is your helping hand and the most supportive person in your life?

I just wanted to know because I'm really tired about my life. I'm only 16, but the lack of love hurts.

Yaar, I feel like my own family doesn't love me. Sometimes my mom does, but my dad never does. He never talks to me or asks me how I'm doing. He just expects me to be a result-producing machine. He wants me to stay at home all day, locked in my room, barely use my phone, and keep studying.

And I just can't do this anymore.

I wanted to attend a simple dandiya fest at my school.

But I'm a girl living in India, so I can't just go alone. My parents never even let me learn how to ride a two-wheeler. My dad's exact words were, "Will you learn to ride a scooty, or will you study? Where will you go, and what will you even do after learning?"

At my age, my friends are already independent enough to go places and make their own decisions.

But I was never even given the chance to learn. And now, I've lost the desire to go there at all.

There's no one else in my family I can turn to, so I have to keep begging them, folding my hands in front of them, just to get a little freedom.

They never make any efforts for me.

They never have, and I don't think they ever will.

I just want to live.

Technology Why are EVs so ugly

I just saw the new Citroën 2CV and I don't understand why EVs are so much uglier than their normal version.

The Fiat 500 as an example removed their iconic logo to put a text block with 500 there. And the EV Mustang.... so ugly. I'd be so hapöy if they wojld just have the EV version of the iconic cars instead of whatever they Re doing right now.

Am I the only one triggered by this?

Questions What was the “exotic” animal of the early 2000’s ?

idk if this makes sense but i feel like every couple of years, there’s a new “trendy” animal that is popular with kids. Gen Alpha has axolotls, highland cows, capybaras. Late Gen Z had llamas, unicorns, narwhals etc. What animals do you think were popular in the gens before that ?

Questions Did you ever grow up thinking something was normal, only to find out other families did things differently?

Growing up, whenever my parents said we'd leave in 5 minutes, it actually meant another 30 minutes 😂 I thought that was normal until I went to a friend's house and they actually left on time lol.

What’s something your family did that you thought everyone else did too?
