I'm curious if anyone will agree with me, although I assume a lot will disagree. Californication is one of only two pieces of media I consider guilty pleasures (the other is Entourage,) as in I'm actually ashamed to admit I watch it regularly. I watched Californication when it came out and I was in my early 30's, a wannabe writer doing lots of drugs and slutting around, and I thought I'd found a show I could relate to. Even then it was obvious to me that the show was a fantasy for certain types of men (I was trying to be a man as well as a writer, neither worked out) and I assumed it was a fantasy for Kapanos as well.
The thing is, even then I thought it was an incredibly immature show that failed to live up to a great premise, and the fault lies in the writing. Kapanos et al didn't have the courage to actually make Hank an interesting and compelling person. There's plenty of "offensive" shit that doesn't bother me at all, but the show failed by constantly making Hank's politics not current with the times. The biggest failure is how the show approaches LGBTQ issues. To me Hank's character wouldn't have been so chicken shit when it came to sex with men. It would have been cool if he was a true libertine, and was Bi, but even if he was mainly straight, he didn't need to act like a teenager when ever sex between men was brought up. The "ooh gross, lol NOT GAY" shit was stupid and retrograde for both him and Charlie. Mr "holes is holes" Runkle should have actually given his gay actor a blowjob. The amount of humiliating bullshit they made Runkle do, and simply fucking another guy was too much? To my mind this is a huge failure of the show.
In addition, Hank presented as better than the other shitty men in the show, but honestly he was just an old fashioned sexist underneath it all. And I don't mean because he had sex with lots of people he shouldn't have, I mean things like his attitude toward Becca having sex. All his "I hope she's a lesbian" and "get my shotgun" bullshit was straight out off the 50's, and not the 50s of Burroughs and Ginsberg that Hank would have worshipped (except of course he would prefer Kerouac probably, cause you know, no homo.)When it came to pleasure and vice, he was really just a typical old fashioned man like his dad underneath all the talk. I get that his whole shtick was "let's get back to the good old days of Rock N Roll" but it's hard to read his dismissal of hip hop as anything but racist, something the 5th season didn't fix. Make him go to a rave and take X. Make him get down to disco with some drag queens one night. As a fellow Gen Xer I found the "in my day" old man attitude to be the only truly offensive thing about the show. Even Hank's beloved Kurt wore a dress and stood up for gay and trans rights. Hank was, I hate to say it, a pussy.
And don't get me started on the female characters. Marcy was the only woman who had real agency in the show. Say what you will about Madeleine Martin, Becca was a cardboard cut out, and Karen wasn't much better. Hank's insistence on the purity of "his" girls was straight out off the toxic masculinity handbook. Karen should have fucked Lew Ashby and liked it.
