Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Show and Tell Vintage NAD still has it

I recently posted a similar image of my newly 'upgraded' set-up consisting of a an Arcam FMJ A19 and Dali Sonik 3s which replaced my NAD 3020 series 20 and Monitor Audio BX2s respectively - After (too) many A/B tests - I had to return to the almost 50 year old NAD. it just has a sense of character the Arcam doesn't. Thank goodness I didn't get rid of it! Undoubtedly the best hifi conponent I've ever bought, and the cheapest at only £74 10 years ago. If only my arm could reach the volume from my couch...

Tech Support Removing speakers from wall

Post image
60 Upvotes

Hi all, I have these built-in wall speakers that were installed in the late 90’s or early 2000’s. They are 9”x14” and have no visible badging. I can’t seem to remove them. I can slide a thin shim between the wall and the plastic housing but don’t see any clips or anything.
Anyone recognize them or have any tips of getting them out? The former owner of the house was a bit of an audiophile so thinking they are higher end consumer stuff.

Purchasing USA Wiim Pro best option for connecting TV and Spotify Connect to old amp, or other options?

Post image
4 Upvotes

My dad upgraded his setup, so he gave me his old equipment that I just set up. Paradigm Studio 40 v.3s and a Linn Majik-I. Very excited to ditch the soundbar and start using it, but unfortunately the Majik only has RCA inputs, so I’ll need a DAC to hook my TV up to it. I’d also like to be able to stream Spotify Connect lossless through it and connect through Bluetooth. I see a lot of people talking about the Wiim Pro, is that the best option or does anyone have other suggestions? Thanks!

Review/Discussion My budget audiophile setup — thoughts?

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hey everyone! Here’s my current system:

Streamer: WiiM Mini (optical)
DAC: SMSL SU-1
Preamp: AIYIMA T20 with Mullard Reissue 12AX7 Short Plate tubes
Amps: 2× Fosi ZA3 in mono mode (48V/5A each)
Speakers: Pioneer SP-FS52

I listen exclusively to Qobuz and don’t use a subwoofer.

I’m really enjoying this setup, especially its natural, forward vocals, smooth presentation, and lack of listening fatigue. The sound has good body and musicality, making it easy to enjoy music for long listening sessions.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this system and any suggestions for meaningful improvements.

Thanks!

Purchasing USA Needing help attaching LARGE bookshelf speakers to ceiling

So we have a mixed media room in our basement. I snagged a denon AVR 6500x for 800 this weekend and am coming from a denon s730h. First just to hear surround behind was everything I've been missing. I have 4 ceiling speakers and now I'm using those as atmos. Originally the back ceilings I had to use as the rears and it was very underwhelming.

I picked these immaculate elac ub51 at goodwill a little while back for 8.99 each 😱

Just to play with the rears I ran cable and set them on a table we have behind our sectional. Above that table and behind the sectional is a bulk head. Ideally I'd like to mount these sideways in the far right corner of this picture and a little more left above the table. That way when kids eat snacks it's there no obstruction to the view and people don't have to worry about hitting their head on the speaker if their really tall.

I don't want the speakers hanging down a lot and just want them behind the listening area and tilted down. That way I can have a 5.2.4.

Any help is greatly appreciated on ideas for mounts. Or an idea to make one. The problem I'm running into is the size, weight and many mounts want to be mounted on the wall and not the ceiling.

Current set up:

Receiver: Denon AVR-X6500H

Front Left: Paradigm Monitor 9 v7

Front Right: Paradigm Monitor 9 v7

Center: Paradigm Monitor Center 1 v7

Surround Left: ELAC Uni-Fi UB5

Surround Right: ELAC Uni-Fi UB5

Atmos: 4 × Jamo 8.5CS in-ceiling speakers

Front Subwoofer: SVS PC-2000 Pro

Rear Subwoofer: Paradigm Monitor SUB 12 Series 7

Media Player: Nvidia Shield TV Pro

Projector: Vidda C3 Ultra

Don't know the specific model, any insight is welcome. The amp is an RXV-467.

This will be my first actual 240v sound system, I have been using a YTS71 with my computer which has actually been pretty nice. Should I expect a big improvement? The best sound I've ever had is my Audison Prima split and sub system in the car.

They will be going in my small loungeroom, hooked up with an optical cable from the TV and another from the loungeroom computer, or should I just use ARC?

Can't wait to set it all up, drop a tab of Lucy and listen for hours. 🤤

Purchasing Asia Creative SBS E2500 vs Fifine Ampligame A22

• Upvotes

I'm going to mainly use them for PC/PS5 speaker audio so I don't have to always wear headphones, will connect them to my monitor's 3.5mm audio jack so connectivity isn't an issue. I don't care about RGB or size, and they're about the same price in my area.

My other options are Creative Pebble Plus 2.1, Edifier XM2PF, Edifier M1360, Logitech Z313.

What do you think?

Show and Tell Music Monday

Post image

Work systems down mean I had nothing on, so took day off short notice for Music Monday.

Speaker stands just finished today.

Been wanting a stereo system for years. Never had space until a couple years ago. Was supposed to have some Kef Calindas that were in the house I grew up in, but they are gone (don't ask. It has been years and I am still upset). Gradually built this out in the last year.

Floor stands not an option, because while there's space there too much of a knock over risk, so diy shelf mounts have had to do.

There's iso feet between speaker and stand and felt pads between feet and side-board. I realise spikes theoretically couple, but practically optics were why I picked them.

It's early days, but this certainly doesn't sound worse than the foam blocks I had before. Possibly better (possible placebo), possibly just because tweeters are closer to ear height at listening too, possibly about the same.

- Wiim ultra, douk a5, Montior Audio silver 50 7g, DIY 'rack' and stands. Sony cdp-xe270

Streaming: Haken - The Mountain via qobuz

(Cambridge minx sub not in picture)

Purchasing USA Help me out please

• Upvotes

I got my first car recently, a 2006 stock CRV. I'm using a cigarette port Bluetooth transmitter for now, which kinda sounds shitty. I need some crazy shit for my dnb and dubstep, anywhere from 1.2k to 2.4k watts. I found a sub with amp setup that I really like, I just don't know what I need to do. Im thinking of getting Skar 12" 2.4k watt, which my friend has the singular 1.2k one which sounded sick. I need help knowing what to I need to buy electricity-wise and all that since I have no clue. I am going to buy a stereo, so I need to know which one is compatible with this sub or any yall recomend for a setup. My max budget is 800 for all the stuff concerning the sub and 170 concerning the stereo stuff.

Purchasing CAN Want to get a decent-ish turntable setup for around $500 CAD

So yeah I've been getting into Vinyls recently and have been building a collection over the last 3-4 years but the problem is I only have a Crosley player that was gifted to be a while back (Really appreciate it as a gift obviously but I do want to upgrade now).

So I've been looking into various guides, threads and websites on how to get a setup and it's all just a bit overwhelming. I'd really appreciate if someone could give a breakdown of the different components I'd need to get and the best way to fit it into my budget.

Fine with getting new or used, and don't need the setup to work with anything besides music really and playing vinyls. My ultimate goal is to get a decent starting point with this budget and then upgrade that over time.

Edit: Just an update on what I have found used for a turntable are Technics SL-D2 for 200 CAD and a Pioneer PL-520 for 275 CAD. They seem solid to be but would love a second opinion on how they regarded.

Purchasing USA Recommendation for Budget Speakers for Macbook/PC setup

Hello everyone!

I’m currently looking to setup a Macbook/PC Setup but I do not have idea what a good budget speakers would be for this kind of setup.

I’ll be using a TESmart KVM (Teksmart PKS0802A10) to switch between this Macbook (Work/ Personal PC). I am hoping I am doing things correct, and if a good budget speaker would fit what I am looking for. I do not like very big speakers if that makes any difference. Something small-mid size yet still worth the price.

Thank you in advance and sorry for the stupid ask! 🙏🏽

Tech Support Looking for new stylus

Post image
1 Upvotes

The stylus on my first turntable finally broke and im looking to purchase a new one what would yall recommend? Im looking for all around good sound im not focused on an specific genre (I play the quietest jazz to the loudest nosie). Want something durable (longer than 300 hours) and that cuts deep and picks up everything. I have an victrola model VPRO-2000 with an audio technicia cartridge (willing to buy a new cartridge if needed). The table plays though 2 Sony SS-CS5s (the speakers pictured below them are out of commission. if anyone knows someone who repairs speakers in the west Georgia area let me know). My price range is around 200-300 dollars.

Tech Support SMSL AL400 and grounding issues, or shall I just get a Wiim Amp Pro

I'm considering buying an SMSL AL400 amp, but I read here https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/smsl’s-tpa3255-all-in-one-dac-amplifier-al400.67952/page-4 that it's not grounded. One of the users makes it sound as if it might explode at any time.
I know that it's not that linear, but I wonder what are the implications.

I was going to get the AL400 and a Wiim Amp Mini, but now I'm considering the Amp pro in case this with the SMSL is really an issue.

Review/Discussion Dedicated CD player or DVD player with an external DAC?

Post image
36 Upvotes

Which one is currently in your setup? I had the latter for a while then my DVD player broke and found the Arcam CDS27 Sacd player at Cash Converters in great condition for £120. The thing is built like a tank and seems like it'll out last me. I am not going to lie and say it sounds miles better than my DVD player with external DAC. The built in DAC is respectable, so I just use that, especially for the few SACDs I own.

Tech Support In ceiling speaker installation

Post image
2 Upvotes

I am looking for advice on installing in ceiling speaker position in multiple bedrooms. This is a retrofit DIY project. This space above the ceiling is an attic with blow-in in insulation. All wiring can be connected to a utility closet via the attic where the streamer and amplifier will be.

The bedrooms are all of similar size approximately 11' x 12' except for the master bedroom which is 14' x 16'.

I was planning on putting 2 6.5" speakers (Kef Ci I 60ER) in the ceilings for background music. No one is really an audiophile in the household but I wanted the experience/advice of experts so that I avoid making an obvious mistake in speaker placement.

So...is the idea to get L R positioned equal distance from the bed, centered along the length of the "side" walls and at least 18" from the wall? If there is an obstacle with that placement, would you:

Option A (Red): move the speakers closer together (ie. Closer to the dead center of the room)?

Option B (Green): move the speakers along the "side" walls closer to the bed/listener?

Option C (Blue): move the speakers along the "side" walls farther from the listener?

Option D: Somewhere better than A, B or C.

Purchasing USA Need Help Narrowing Down Speaker Options

Post image

Managed to snag this Nikko TRM-600 at a sidewalk sale for $20, brought it home and it works perfectly. Looking to swap my Technics SB-CR55 out with some better speakers that can show off this amp a bit more.

Some budget options on the used market in my area around $100:

Polk RTA 8t

Klipsch SF1

KLH Model 24

Advent Prodigy

KLH Model 17

Fried Q/4

Polk Monitor 10

JBL J2060

Are any of these decent options? Open to critiques and recommendations

Review/Discussion Question about speaker feet/isolation pads

Post image
8 Upvotes

I just bought a pair of ELAC dfr52 off marketplace. Attached you will see what the bottoms look like. I live in a second floor apartment with vinyl flooring. Obviously can’t have the spikes on them. My question: Do I remove the spikes and put the speakers on isolation pads like this or do I just find speaker feet for the spikes like this? Does it matter which one I choose?

Open to suggestions or recommendations. Thanks for the help.
