I didnโt know until I actually had several laying hens (Rhode Island Reds) how lovely they are.
They have a lot of personality and are curious and silly and fun if you engage with them regularly and treat them like pets.
I fell in love with my chickens.
But they are not super bright.

I find their stupidity charming, it's very reptillian and I love reptiles.

I have raised many broiler chickens. This is typical behavior. They are sweet and affectionate. This makes it very difficult to dispatch them. Also, this one is at most 48 days old

Iโll forgive you for thinking this but after having hens for eggs for a couple of years now after I inherited them; they are so fucking stupid itโs ridiculous. Like every morning I let them out of the coop to peck around for 30m while I do chores. One of the chores is to refill their water. So they go out to get food but they are thirsty and will see the water trough from the outside of the coop area and will just run into the chicken wire over and over again to try to get to the water after having literally walked around the there 20s earlier. They are so competitive itโs frustrating, I will give them string cheese and split off a string for each hen and throw them around and all four will run and fight over one of them at a time. This is also fucking wild behavior from a hen after being around for 1 day? Are you kidding me? Iโve had my hens for a couple years and they wonโt even let me touch them. Idk think itโs Bs.

To counter this anecdote we raised our hens from eggs, they dont run into their chicken wire, recognize sounds like us coming out of the house to see them, and dont mind being picked up or held. They are not intelligent by any means but they aren't mean or stupid either, other than when it comes to food.

When I was a kid we had a pet chicken, she loved cuddling with me on the sofa while watching movies, and she was smart enough to leave the sofa to poop. She also recognized the different people in the house and treated each one differently.
Good girl, eventually she went to a friends farm and lived there.
