Sadly this is an endangered artform now that wood was invented. Jokes aside this is just not amazing

u/Mistravels 27d ago
I think it has a LOT of potential. But need a "less is more" approach.
Wood grain is not that defined.

And every board shouldn’t have a giant knot area. Needs more variety to look organic

Stained or oiled wood can definitely look very similar to this depending on both the type of wood and product used.

Fun theory about wood: the microorganisms that break down lingin (wood polymer) hadn't evolved during the Carboniferous period while forests spread everywhere, so when trees died, they fell but didnt rot. Accumulative layer over millions of yesrs led to the formation of some types of coal deposi

think about how long it took to develop microbes for lignin, millions of years
think about how long it will take to develop microbes for plastics
(^ trick thought because ASI is going to invent that shit in the next like 2 years)

Usually about 8-9 feet. But this coved shaped ceiling looks particularly high and far away from the eyes.
5
u/NoAdsDude 27d ago
You're phrasing that in such a way that people might think you're implying that all ceilings are the same height.
Put it this way, that guy is standing on top of some kind of scaffolding, so it's probably pretty high up there.

I'm about to stain one tomorrow and am not too worried because you can never get close enough to see deficiencies. The walls are 8 feet and the vaulted part tops out at just over 11.

Depends on who is doing it. A lot of high end boats are switching to faux teak because it is more durable and requires a lot less maintenance. There are some artists who can make it look nearly identical to the real thing. Once it gets a bunch of clear coats on top, it’s absolutely beautiful.

u/More_Shoulder5634 27d ago
Me and my uncle did something similar to a bunch of rich peoples (well rich for siloam springs AR) houses on a golf course. Textured drywall, textured and a standard paint roller, slightly different color on each, then rubbed wood stain on the walls with a rag. Looked freaking amazing we did the ladys house who owned a fairly big regional pizza chain. Ended up doing like 4 more houses. He had a paint business, and was a big stoner, i think he got real high and thought of it. Looked like an old mexican village or something
12
u/AirshipEngineer 27d ago
Which is why it's a great idea for a cealing! Cheap and nobody will get close enough to see it in detail.
17
u/Megaledon17 27d ago
I mean yea that's why it's on the ceiling and not anywhere you'd get up close and personal
5
u/BeautifulCuriousLiar 27d ago
yeah… my dad did this for his friend once. they used pvc pipe filled with concrete as pillars and my dad painted them to imitate wood. he didn’t use his hands though
he used his feet
no im kidding he used normal paint brushes. of course up close it wasn’t perfect but gave much more life to the area as opposed to simple white pvc pipe. rip old man.

It's called painting faux bois. It's an old technique. Usually the crafts person uses special tools for creating wood grain.

u/Low-Grab-8225 27d ago

u/UndercoverPotato 27d ago
This looks like it could be in India. In India houses are usually made with materials that stay cooler to the touch due to the heat (wood gets hot too quick). So since wood paneling/flooring is impractical/rare there, it's fashionable to fake it.
On the contrary in cold countries you can sometimes find floors made of wood or other more easily heated materials but made to look like marble/stone (which would be too cold to walk on in the winter).
3
u/radiationshield 27d ago edited 27d ago
Regarding floors: as a norwegian i can say with pretty high confidence that there is no such things as making floors of wood that looks like stone. Sure you can paint or lacquer floors, but it's not to make them look like marble.
5
u/TeaSharp3154 27d ago
Concrete is cheaper, and resistant to termites and water damage which are much bigger considerations in many parts of India as well
2
u/spacenb 26d ago edited 26d ago
I live in Canada and I’ve never seen nor heard in my life of wood being used to imitate stone floors, this is just not a thing. Rich people put heating coils hidden under ceramic or porcelain tiles to heat it. Regular people just know and accept that tile is cold and wear slippers inside the house.
Wood is still expensive. Many cheap apartments or homes don’t even have wood flooring, they use vinyl or other composite materials to imitate wood. We don’t use wood for its thermal properties, we use it because it looks good, but wood that looks good enough for floors or kitchen cabinets is quite pricy. We use insulation inside the walls to keep our houses and buildings warm.

10
u/lnTheGrimDarkness 27d ago
I was about to say. Sorry to break it for y'all but in person from up close, which is surely the standpoint of whoever's gonna live there, that definitely doesn't even look close to actual wood grain. You can see it's wonky from the video too.
However the guy does undeniably have some kind of talent.
4
u/hoserb2k 27d ago
It's the ceiling, no visitor is ever going to see it as closely as in this video. That said, I agree if you are looking, you can tell it's not real.
That said said, almost nobody is going to notice. Think about inspecting a new apartment or house for the first time. Even though you inspect everything closely, without fail after six months you will discover some flaw that seems obvious after you notice it.
Most people are going to walk in the room and see "wood" on the ceiling out of the corner of their eye and never think about it again.

I don't think it's super awesome, but I do think it's great that people attempt creative stuff like this. It would've raken a while to figure out how to do this.
Shame about the chemicals and stuff.

Yeah...don't do that. Not wearing gloves...staining in basically an upside down bowl...probably an oil-based stain. And he probably does this quite often. The damage he's doing to his lungs and skin will likely shorten his life.

English narrowboat cabins used to be "painted" using a trick not entirely unlike this to simulate the grain of higher quality wood than the cheap stuff they were actually using; they'd apply a thick layer of dark brown varnish and then run a comb through it to leave thinner troughs that showed the lighter wood underneath.

I feel like this might be more expensive than buying actual wood? Like surely it takes a hell of a lot of practice to make paint look exactly like wood and I doubt that's cheap.

Nice technique. With a little more variety it would be more convincing, because these knotholes all have the same pattern.
