I cannot wait to show my godson this tomorrow.
He and his sister were very young during the women's world cup And I taught the the Spanish "Gooooooaaaaaallllllllllllll" hands held above your held.
We are not Norwegian, so this isn't one of ours, but they are going to love it still
Also obsessed with the Mexican -south korean song.
The world cup is amazing when watching with kids. I bought them a globe years ago to show where countries were coming from.

Expect to see this at a Minnesota Vikings game this season.

u/Zhuemann Jun 22 '26
I agree, it was a pretty popular chant/activity at high school basketball games in MN (and probably many places) in the early 2000s.

The US is very behind in crowd chants. We are still stuck on "DE-FENCE" that's the most complex we got.

u/QUINNFLORE Jun 22 '26
Crazy that norway didn’t play a game at us bank stadium this year. One of the best stadiums in the NFL and its viking themed already

yeah, i like the NBA but the fans are so lame compared to football. DEFENSE!! DEFENSE!!
24
u/Legitimate_Steak_522 Jun 19 '26
I remember one world cup being at a pub and seeing some American fans and their chant was "I believe that we will win" over and over again.
1
u/i3lueDevil23 Jun 19 '26
I love this chant. Gets me jacked up even though, yes, we know that we won’t win at soccer
6
u/Legitimate_Steak_522 Jun 19 '26
Football chants should be more about insulting players, managers, fans or your own team
1
u/i3lueDevil23 Jun 19 '26
I mean. It is kind of insulting considering we know very well that it’s not true
4
u/eVictoriann Jun 21 '26
Has absolutely nothing on British chants such as:
🎶🎶
Your sister is your mother
Your father is your brother
You all f**k one another
The kiddly family
De de de 🎶🎶21
u/rafael403 Jun 18 '26
-> our sports fans are lame as hell compared to other countries
Are the Knicks fans rampaging trough NYC trying to overcompensate for that??
7
u/theaviationhistorian Jun 19 '26
At least the stadium chants don't destroy people's livelihoods or personal property, like that guy's taxicab on the news.
13
u/Tafsern Jun 19 '26
I mainly watch golf, and american fans are either drunk as shit or shouts "USA USA" or "GET IN THE HOLE". Or all three combined. That's all I know.
1
15
u/MItrwaway Jun 18 '26
There are pockets in North America that can get close. Montreal Canadiens fans in the playoffs come to mind.
3
u/AbleCryptographer317 Jun 21 '26
During the last European Cup England fans sang "You're shit... but your birds are fit" at Swedish fans to the tune of Pet Shop Boys "Go West".
The Swedes replied with "Go home... to your ugly wives" to the same tune. 😂
9
u/hkohne Jun 18 '26
Come visit us in Portland for a Timbers match. The Timbers Army never stops drumming & singing except during halftime, and all the chant words are available online. Granted, this video is epic.
5
u/WhiteRussian90 Jun 19 '26
Plus, a lumberjack will saw a slice off a tree with a giant chainsaw! It’s awesome!
1
1
u/theaviationhistorian Jun 19 '26
Seriously, In Mexico they start chanting folk songs like Cielito Lindo. Having an entire stadium echo it invigorates a lot of Mexican players and fans alike. Or when they all started singing El Rey after the team won against South Korea when the stadium played Vicente "El Chente" Fernandez' version.

u/TheBaconHasLanded Jun 23 '26
College football bands hard-carry the culture
That said, I am PRAYING that this makes it to the NFL

Please, I live in Minnesota and my ancestors immigrated here 150 Years ago from Denmark. So I can clearly say that those are not real Vikings unlike me and my Ancestors
61
u/Whitechapelkiller Jun 18 '26
It is widely acknowledged in historical circles that the true viking age ended at the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066.
31
u/ingrimsch95 Jun 18 '26
These so called "historical circles" obviously don't know jack. Everybody knows that Washington only won the civil war thanks to Vikings intervention. I mean come on you can even see that he used Viking Longboats to cross the Delaware river

As a Norwegian historian, I feel as if I have to agree with you on everything you have written in this thread.

u/theaviationhistorian Jun 19 '26
Good lord, the Tottenham strikers were Harry Kane and Son Heung-min! Both still taking effect today. While struggling to pronounce it right, the Telemundo staff kept bringing up Son's name many times while he tried to score one against Mexico yesterday.
2
2
u/Caliterra Jun 19 '26
nah, historians agree that the Viking age ended in 1977 in their last Super Bowl appearance in a loss against the Raiders. They've never reached those heights again
1
1
u/fresan123 Jun 19 '26
That is such a stupid and English centred take. Harald Hardrada wasn't even a "viking". He was a christian king and a legitimate claimant to the English throne. And even if we consider it a viking invasion(it was not), then Norwegians continued to pillage the british isles up to the late 1100s
1
u/Whitechapelkiller Jun 19 '26
I said widely acknowledged because historians use that as what draws a line under what had an effect and what didnt. Yes vikings may have continued the occasional raid but it had fuck all effect on England after Stamford Bridge because the Norman conquest occured the same year and the politics of England was not affected by Viking incursions after that. Maybe Scotland i dont know or care.
1
u/fresan123 Jun 19 '26
My point is Harald Hardrada wasnt even in England to raid. He was a proper king with a claim to the English throne. Just like the other 2 kings.
And England was affected by a big raid by King Øystein II in the 1100s. And king Magnus barefoot conquered and raided parts of scotland and Ireland where he eventually died in the late 1000s.
I care about this lol
1
u/Whitechapelkiller Jun 19 '26
Never heard of Oystein II. Sorry..and I love British history. That's maybe why. I will have a look.
14
u/NacresR Jun 18 '26
From cutthroat warriors to passing down how to make salads with Mayo and marshmallows. 😂
Edit: this isn’t an insult the salads are good, just don’t worry about how they look.

..... did they forget their sail?
→ More replies (2)2
u/theaviationhistorian Jun 19 '26
You see, Hägar the Horrible forgot to bring the longboat cat. So the rats ate the rations and the crew sacrificed the sail to make an impromptu net. But some dickish white whale just stole it!

u/Late-Ad-2845 Jun 20 '26
I bet every single one of Them would cry. But hey Look at us WE are cool Vikings.
11
u/laserdiods Jun 18 '26
I wonder what the structure was like underneath. That’s a lot of momentum!!
7
u/zermatus Jun 18 '26
I know bridges are now consider possible this synchronous motion on them, but stadiums…. Maybe someone else can clear this for us.
3
u/theaviationhistorian Jun 19 '26
Technically, stadiums are designed to surpass fan resonance. But some have failed like in the Netherlands in 2021.

It’s cool when it happens in concerts (usually metal or adjacent like King Gizzard). I assume it started with Norwegian metal fans.
55
u/77slevin Jun 18 '26
It started on the boats, mate, rowing in unison.
20
18
u/AzathothBlindgod Jun 18 '26
Yep, look up live shows from Amon Amarth. One tour they had an entire Viking boat on stage and it was rad.
11
u/Vestus65 Jun 18 '26
Amon Amarth has a song called Put Your Back into the Oar. During this song the crowd usually does the rowing thing. It's fun.

u/MrMiddelthon Jun 18 '26
I think it’s heavily inspired by Icelands chant from the World Cup in 2016.

1
u/Haestein_the_Naughty Jun 21 '26
Idk how it started, but it's a pan-Norwegian chant by this point. Even the parliament did it while in session. Cool af to care for our own history and heritage like this
6
u/Rude-Revolution-8687 Jun 18 '26
That looks like a very organised orgy.

they were actually demonstrating their new middle out method of jerking off every guy in the stadium.

Just like in a heavy metal pit. Amon Amarth has this happen all the time at their concerts.

This is much more satisfying speeding up/slowing down the video and going back and forth.

This reminds me of at high school basketball games where our student fan section did a “rollercoaster” thing

We did this at football games at my college. It’s was Grand Valley State University 2001. They had a historically good year and we’d row our total points after every touchdown. I think we averaged 50pts a game that year. Total blast.
1
u/Lpfanatic05 Jun 19 '26
I would be more happy to be singing "a dozen virgins" from Beowulf's movie with them.

Imagine hearing that in a quiet fishing village at the british shore. Dragon headed ships racing towards you on the horizon.

u/theaviationhistorian Jun 19 '26
NGL, it is quite intimidating watching it on live TV. I can imagine it being a psychological factor in person!

In Sweden, Norway and in Denmark, we say "Ro i land" translated it means row to land, and it is an expresion for we are going to pull this off, or carry off.

u/Arylus54773 Jun 21 '26
Imagine standing on the prow of a ship, seeing Viking vessels coming at you and hearing that.
That’s just terrifying.

Minnesota Vikings fans, you guys need to get on doing this. You can keep doing the Skol chants, just add this to your repertoire.

u/RoyalPerSe Jun 19 '26
Idc, it's so cringe. The Norwegians aren't a lively bunch in general so this looks like forced participation

As a Norwegian, I find this extremely awkward. Also, it’s really bad rowing technique.

u/SaigonDisko Jun 19 '26
More engagement AI - like almost everything on be amazed.
A guy over on the right going to his seat passes right though a couple of people rowing.
Use your senses! Even the end just feels synthetic. A sea of dead human emotion either side of it, nothing happening on the pitch but nobody in the sea is swiveled round watching. That's not what happenes when chants take place.

The same Vikings who looted and plundered and pillaged and graped.
19
u/ReApEr01807 Jun 18 '26
Do you make the same comment about the Romans when Italy plays a match and has a fun, interactive fan chant?
-16
u/Pantherist Jun 18 '26
Italians cheer Italian culture, not the Roman Empire. If they do, that's effed up too.
13
u/ReApEr01807 Jun 18 '26
AS Roma absolutely uses Roman Legion imagery and some scoring from the movie Gladiator during their games
-6

u/Bessie_Ackee Jun 18 '26
Roman culture is part of Italian culture, they have been spreading their culture for the past 2.7k years
