Doing this shit on the same day they decided to raise their own salaries

u/rifwasbetter0 Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26
I'd do that too if i get to decide when to raise my salary haha

u/TVRoomRaccoon Jun 18 '26
For the record, three parties (Rødt, SV and MDG) voted against that. So PLEASE give the others well-deserved shit for it, but know that not everyone in parliament supported it!
28
u/ImpactVirtual1695 Jun 18 '26
Also for the record. I would vote not to raise my own salary to pretend like it matters to me - especially when I know it'll pass

u/TVRoomRaccoon Jun 18 '26
That’s kind of a catch-22, no?
Politician votes for something bad: “I knew it, they’re evil”
Politician votes for something good: “Virtue signalling, they only voted that way because they knew it wouldn’t pass”
There are idealists in politics, just as you’ll find idealists everywhere else. Not saying they’re the majority, but they do exist.

Welcome to talking politics with an American who is skeptical any politician doesn't have their own self-interest in mind. So instead of actually choosing one with ideals. We choose one that is so blatantly self-interested, he is building himself a golden ballroom.

u/ImpactVirtual1695 Jun 18 '26
Yeah, how often did Obama's Whitehouse basketball court get used btw?
Better to be a realist than an idealist.

u/prosocialbehavior Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26
Are you talking about the tennis courts that were already there that they converted a part of into a basketball court? They literally just repainted some lines and rolled in some temporary basketball hoops my guy.
Edit: Here is a picture of the $600 million dollar golden basketball court. /s

u/Bigote_de_Swann Jun 18 '26
You are literally what he meant
-7
u/ImpactVirtual1695 Jun 18 '26
Obviously.
What, do I need to play victim? Should I dive?
Should I lie to the public? Should I pretend to be an emotionally stunted rock?
How dense did you think I (or any Republican) had to be to make that statement?
I tell you what, you come here and hold my hand and tell me the world will be a better place. We just have to trust the people voting to raise their own wages while they increase taxes on the people who need it.
All while people who have religious and political differences, decapitate and rape the innocent and those who want so bad to be saviors keep acting like you.

Yes. Now, welcome to the minds of American politics.
To say, there are idealists.
Yes there are.
But what are the odds that they're all idealists?
In my terrible opinion, every country is ran by a bunch of greedy mitwits, significantly more likely than they are by a bunch of idealists.
The truth is, even if the idealist manage to pass a bill, they neglect the potential of abuse from someone else down the line.
An example of this is pretty simple. You tell the 5 year old do not play video games in bed past 9pm. It's time for bed. The 5 year old is playing video games lying on the floor beside the bed at 10.
Oh! But you clearly said, not IN bed.
If you assume everyone will act in self interest, you prevent abuse and dumb catch-22 scenarios like this. Better to be a realist in an idyllic scenario than an idealist in a realistic scenario.
At least then you can't be called the jester.

How immature.
You pursue what cannot even be proven to be true. There is no empirical evidence that anything is in fact noble or ideal. That's why we call them idealistic. It's very hedonistic of you, to chase what must be good because it makes someone feel good and fuzzy.
Then you call me defeated?
We've been arguing over qualifiers of good and bad for 2000 years reproductive rights good, lopping off reproductive organs bad, unless you're pursuing happiness and doing it to yourself then it's also good.
Murder babies bad, abortion good because selfish necessity. Its hedonism masquerading under the guise of the pursuit of noble things.
You praise democracy yet, there is no true democracy in the world.
In fact the very thing we're both here to celebrate is the epitome of Meritocracy. We are here to enjoy and test the best of the best together and rate the values of each individual towards a common goal of their teams. The more merit towards that stance and the more those players become valued.
Democracy could never.
Edit: feel free to make your closing arguments if you like. Upon reviewing it seems we are talking past each other. For me the best political structures are those that fuse the best of both. But let's not pretend this wasn't a healthy dialogue - we have a fundamental difference in what should be strived for. And that's okay, we are different people who see a need for different things.

I'm not sure about the other parties but I believe Rødt politicians donate a portion of their salary above a certain number directly to the party.
So they're not getting a pay raise regardless.
3
u/sqq Jun 18 '26
its percentage i believe so the get a pay rise. But Rødt has always voted against this shit, and you know atleast they mean it. Probably SV and MDG too knowing their politics.
1
u/themarxian Jun 19 '26
SV does percentage of the Parliament wage.
Rødts rule is that everything above median wage+20% i donated. So it doesn't follow the MP salary, it follows the median salary of the population.

hot take- politicans should be paid more. It shouldn't be only for people who are already rich or people who are looking to trade favors for money.

Northern Europe as whole as the worst chants I've ever seen, there's got to be a correlation between the climate and the coolness level of the chants

I disagree, Norrköping for example even has some chants in a minor key, not major like most other chants. That's pretty cool if you're a musician

Sure kind of cringe but I get the feeling not many countries government/senates/parliaments etc could be unified long enough to do their version of this.
I respect it.

u/EvenMoreCoconuts Jun 18 '26
Was my first thought, having been all too well acquainted with the idiocy and divisiveness of American politics.

Football 'unifies' every country, no party would say "we hate our boys and hope they lose" and refuse to celebrate
3
u/ArbitraryOrder Jun 18 '26
We had Republican members of Congress saying that about the USWNT, so yes they absolutely can.

u/Zone_Amazing Jun 18 '26
You clearly have never seen switzerlands right wing party.
They despise the nationalteam for the most part because players like Xhaka because they don't sing the anthem and because of the eaglesign in the serbia matches.

u/worker-parasite Jun 18 '26
No party would say 'we hate outr electorate and we're out to fuck a large part of it' and yet...

u/ADarwinAward Jun 18 '26
The only example I can think of a national team dividing a nation was in South Africa before the team integrated in 1991.

Me thinking this was cool, a government showing support for its team but the comments assure me it’s actually horrible.

Vuvuzelas surely

u/Qiluk Jun 18 '26
I kinda liked the Vuvuzelas :$ Mostly for the fact that it became so associated with a great WC so my nostalgia kicks in immediately to summer and football vibes

u/gnaixnaid Jun 18 '26
For me, it was fun for the first half hour but started to wear down after that. I feel like the tv broadcasts helped by reducing the volume, but I don't have any evidence.
(I just realised my club flair is gone 😞)

Surprised by the negative reactions here. Let people have fun and be proud.

Well if they’re doing this after giving themselves a salary raise, I don’t think it’s cool anymore

u/PensiveinNJ Jun 18 '26
Why doesn’t the American senate pull out some six shooters and start firing into the ceiling? Are they not patriotic?
1
u/AffectionateRush2620 Jun 18 '26
Why is everyone in comments saying this is uncool and cringe, where it just shows how showing off the culture of their country and showing that they care. I know you have your own opinions, but still. I don’t what what with thing, other then the fact that “politicians are doing it”
13
u/QuietMath3290 Jun 18 '26
Because it's not the culture of their country lol.
I want to root for Norway, but this viking-larp has to stop. It's like if Italy, on their inevitable return to the world cup, were to use fucking roman numerals on their shirts, and all the supporters were to be dressed in togas.

Has nothing to do with Norwegian culture, it’s a thing made up for this tournament. And most Norwegians have only ever «rowed» in a gym.

u/AffectionateRush2620 Jun 18 '26
Yeah, it’s Reddit, buts it’s kinda sad. People hate their own lives so they just go on Reddit and hate anything that even reeks positivity. Might not be that deep, but still lol
