Old like pre 2000’s or 1970’s or 90BC. As I miss the pre 00’s was a lot more cool. These days feels like Dallas

I miss the 1994 Austin when I first moved here. It was glorious then.
6
u/thisisntinstagram Feb 20 '26
Pfft. I was here in 93. Way better then.
2
u/usinjin Feb 20 '26
My dad says 70 was even better!

Same. My parents moved in 91 I think I grew up here. Remember them building 183 at Anderson mill. The special city it once was is no longer.

Late 1970’s- early 80’s. What a lovely place it was then. So fun. So cheap.

Back when Austin was still cool.

Not to be that guy but you don't really find ammonites in the Glen Rose for the most part. Yes, i'm miserable at parties.

Most central austin creeks cut through other limestone members that are not the glen rose.

u/ShesFunnyThatWay Feb 20 '26
This might prove your point, but there's a large ammonite embedded in a boulder on a popular trail running along Hamilton Creek (more visible to foot traffic heading towards the Pedernales river from Hamilton pool). Was super psyched to see it, making me think there were more around.

Would you be able to identify a possible formation from a conglomerate of fossils?
I'm up in Georgetown, and the USGS map shows the whole area as just "Cretaceous" though there are some cool fossil formations around the lake.
I pulled a basketball size chunk of limestone/fossil conglomerate out of my yard with lots of different fossils that I can't name but don't resemble what I've seen around the lake. Curious if it's local and was just construction fill when the house was built, or if it was something a previous owner brought from elsewhere and left on the porch as decor.

No unfortunately i wouldn't..when you take geology at acc/UT theres a hard focus on central texas with field trips etc. three years of that but a decade later it's super fuzzy...i just know what's generally in the Glen Rose because i lived on a creek in westlake and collected probably hundreds of fossils but not a single ammonite; i go to walnut creek the first time ever and find two broken ammonites. There are SO many people in austin who would love to take a crack at your rock..if Blodgett is still at ACC rio grande i bet he'd love to help.

u/entoaggie Feb 20 '26
Check out the app ROCKD. It shows 3 or 4 formations in the greater Gtown area.

u/Capnmolasses Feb 20 '26
I remember that my dead found a few in some of the creeks in Austin.
How dead was he?

I have found many in the Georgetown formation (shoal creek) but nowhere else in town. I’ve found a Porocystis Globularis in Glen Rose which was exciting.

Is "the Glen Rose" something other than the city called Glen Rose that's next to Granbury? I'm confused.

u/partysandwich Feb 20 '26
What would you actually find?
8
u/pifermeister Feb 20 '26
Pretty much the whole thing is made of granocardium, a bivalve that you'll definitely recognize if you google it.
5
u/partysandwich Feb 20 '26
after conducting a search I’ll stick with the Ammonites canon because those granocardiums are boring as hell

https://webapps.usgs.gov/txgeology/ probably the best place to hunt GRF is the cuts on 360 and 2222 but I haven’t gone that far, I’ve just found stuff on trails. The algal bodies are kinda cool and I think there are echinoids too.

I'd rather talk to you about that at parties than the latest sports ball result or whatever dumb reality show is streaming. Oh wait I don't get invited to parties

u/pifermeister Feb 20 '26
I found out last year that if i smoke even the tiniest bit of weed i start uncontrollably rolling my eyes and frowning when people bring up stuff i give zero shits about (basically the same topics you listed). Such a buzzkill for me that my face can't hold back. Sports is the worst fucking conversation..like just standing there and talking about what happened on tv last week and blurting out statistics..i know we're in the minority but oof.

u/AustinGondola Feb 20 '26
You could get anything you wanted at the ole Ammonite World Headquarters.

u/kwixta Feb 19 '26
I bet each and every one has a story about the time they smoked out with Willie

u/NomadStar45 Feb 20 '26
True story, in 2008 I was dating a girl for a few months, things started getting weird. Caught her cheating on me with his great grandson. A willie story none the less.

u/rawmerow Feb 20 '26
I remember talking to to some old fart at the spider house around 1999 or so and him telling me how Austin sucked then and how it was so much better in the ‘70s… lol 😂

Makes you wonder what color our layer will be. There are probably people who can tell us but we won’t listen.

u/partysandwich Feb 20 '26
It’s striking how sudden the changes are in some layers. What does that mean?

u/Juan_Connery Feb 20 '26
We have begun to find strata that is less than 50 years old where the pressure has formed a mineral made of iron oxide and old scrap. You can see cans and shit in it very interesting. https://www.geologyin.com/2025/06/new-rock-type-made-from-human-trash.html?m=1

Here we can see where one Ammonite is complaining about another Ammonite bringing their pet single cell organism to the communal feeding center. And not even with a leash! WTF, am I right!?

Ages from now:
“Look, this is when the software sales techies first migrated into Austin.”
“And over here is the start of the Millenial period. You can tell by the first heavy traces of microplastics.”

Ugh, I miss the Austin of 110 million BCE. That’s when Austin was truly Austin.
