Discussion Engagement bait titles

Maybe I’m just turning into an angry old man shouting at clouds who is way behind the times but I’m getting a bit fed up of the massive increase in engagement bait titles on this sub over the past few months. It’s usually always one of the following:

  1. ‘first month in wildlife photography, here are my favourites please tell me I’m amazing even though I’ve just started’
  2. ‘I’m an x year old young photographer, look at how great I am’
  3. ‘Here are some wildlife photos, which is your favourite and also tell me how brilliant they are’

  4. ‘Which one of these photos should I enter into a competition but let’s be honest they’re all fantastic’

These posts always end up being the most popular and the ones I get push notifications about, but to me it’s a cynical way to drive engagement over other posts. I’d much rather know where they’re taken and/or what they are of but maybe that’s just me. If not, maybe the mods could consider updating the community rules to change to only allow locations and/or animal names in the title. This would allow people to find out the key information first (often people don’t even bother including it, again is that for engagement so they get people asking about location?) and would allow it to be a more level playing field on what posts become popular, making the key determinant being the quality of photos rather than the title.

Rant over!

Discussion Reminder: all posts must be OC. Posting a photo which you did not take will get you a PERMANENT ban.

I've noticed a significant uptick in stolen images lately. This subreddit is OC only, no exceptions.

Please make sure to report any posts which you think break this rule. Even if you're not positive, it's better to submit a report than not. We always review all reports to make sure that we aren't erroneously banning people.

I've never really made the effort to shoot backlit shots before, so when I spotted these two large male roos getting into it I took the time to position myself properly for a silhouetted shot. I think it turned out pretty well but I'd love to hear any tips on getting more punch/glow out of the rim light.

This is a shot I really liked, but I am not sure which crop ratio works the best for it. Open for suggestions!

Getting some much needed rain in Utah's west desert. It's been such a hot and dry summer. A small herd of american pronghorn out feeding in the rain.

Canon R5, 100-500mm, 1/1000 sec

I took this picture from a Zodiac boat in the Galapagos. The water was pretty choppy but I was able to use the fast shutter speed and the Canon’s autofocus to take a crisp photo.

It also helped that the penguin didn’t move much. He seemed content to pose for us for as long as we wanted 😀

Bird Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus) foraging in the shallows

Water Rails usually stay well hidden in the reeds, so spotting one always takes a bit of luck. And once you do, you have to be ready with the camera. Here, it stepped out onto the bank for a brief moment, its red bill dipped searchingly into the shallow water.
