Solved! What is this feature on my pocket knife?

I was gifted a pocket knife which I generally just use for opening packages but I'm perplexed by this hook-like structure on the bottom. It's obviously designed to serve a function but I'm at a loss for what it is. It looks like it has a small blade tucked away in the crevice but I have no idea why.

this part of the thread realds like advertising from bots

14

u/NoonSunReversal 4h ago

I can see that...but I literally just told the dude who the maker of the knife was. I promise I've got no skin in this game.

12

u/Arnhildr-Fang 4h ago

Youre pretty close, its referred to as a seat belt stripper.

People realize the 2 aspects that kill in post vehiculsr collision deaths (car on fire, car pushed into river, car on the precipice of a cliff, etc) is the victims inability to get the seat belt off (either due to broken or unreachable components), and unable to exit vehicle (broken door locks, pressure from water, stuff piled on, etc). So, a pocket knife that can quickly access cutting yourself free of your seatbelt & breaking a window open for escape can (and has) save many lives

3

u/Mmmm-Amethyst 4h ago

Got lucky and found clearance knives at Walmart for like $2 with the seat belt cutter and a predominant window smasher spike. I bought all they had to put in our cars and pass out to friends/ family. Some of the best money I've ever spent.

1

u/dedicatedservant 2h ago

Never heard anyone call it a stripper. Looking at product descriptions on cabelas or even the one OP has all say belt cutter, seat belt cutter, or strap cutter

2

u/Arnhildr-Fang 1h ago

Well, not saying its wrong, but ive 90% of the time heard it called a seatbelt stripper. Its kinda like how a weed-eater & weed-wacker are the same thing, just a different name based off different regions.

There's one more example for "different names but same things", but its a bit more...sensitive...

1

u/dedicatedservant 1h ago

The point is that you didn't need to "correct" someone who wasn't wrong.

Thanks for posting, I’m looking for a new knife and this looks great

3

u/Mobmem321 3h ago

Yikes! If you know anything about knives, this looks like a "gas station" knife. I don't even think it's worth money to cut packages with...there is just so much better bang for your buck.

What a deal! You get a boyfriend AND a husband? With engravings? Seems to good to be true

8

u/queerthulhu 5h ago

What do you think the /dp/ stands for?

2

Dick pics, obviously!

1

u/Head-Ad-2136 4h ago

It means you get a boyfriend and a husband.

0

u/syberghost 4h ago

You should have them engrave your phone number, so if he gets lost and someone finds him they can return him.

2

u/Skye-12 5h ago

Just learn to undo the hooks with one hand.

394

u/CHNOS09 15h ago

It is a strap cutter or seat belt cutter.

87

u/CTRemy9085 15h ago

Yep. That’s a seat belt cutter. You’ve got a glass breaker on the same end of the knife too

52

u/N1GHTSQU1R3LL 15h ago

Can also be used to open bags of milk when you come to Canada for a visit.

33

u/EducationNo1776 15h ago

Bags of milk? I'm udderly confused; doesn't that hurt the cow?

26

u/Spider-Dammit 15h ago

Nah, they put the cows to sleep before they blend them up to make milk

26

u/elons-musk-ox 14h ago

And then they put the result in a bottle faster than you can see it. They call it pastyoureyes milk.

12

u/CTRemy9085 14h ago

We can all go home folks. I think we’ve milked this for all it’s worth

4

u/MrMonte 12h ago

Yeah. It’s been spoiled for sure.

3

u/Petcai 3h ago

You're all so cheesy.

3

u/xxxkram 14h ago

That’s the best pink milkshakes!!

2

u/Mirar 13h ago

Don't blend cows to make milk. It's nicer if you just squeeze them. Just like with oranges. Or at least peel them first.

3

u/Spider-Dammit 13h ago

But I like the pulp

1

u/Mirar 13h ago

Then just peel them and blend. Like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0m4x0y3QNw

2

u/txhelgi 14h ago

Or same if you visit Iceland. But make sure to pack this in checked luggage so you don’t get very sad in the bag check line.

3

u/Training_Cut704 15h ago

Bags of … what??

9

u/Ghost-Sync 15h ago edited 14h ago

Canada sells milk in bags, people have a milk jug, think what Americans make cool aid in. They cut a corner off the bag and put the whole bag in their milk jug.

4

u/N1GHTSQU1R3LL 14h ago

Very comprehensive photo, I totally forgot about the bag dispenser.

2

u/Kuges 12h ago

They use to be here in the states as well, least here in Michigan. And for a while school milk came in little plastic bags you had to stab with a straw.

3

u/Ghost-Sync 12h ago

Thats obviously because your basically Canadian then

2

u/Cden1458 6h ago

And the bags of milk tasted a thousand times better than the cartons! I remember drinking them from the bag way back in like 2nd grade.

2

u/RcNorth 6h ago

Eastern Canada: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick.

The rest of Canada’s has cartons or plastic jugs.

0

u/Beaticalle 8h ago

American here, I'd call that a pitcher, not a jug. Jugs have much smaller openings.

4

u/Hot-Chip6034 15h ago

I had a friend living in China for a while and he bought bags of beer which I found really weird not sure if that was common or a local thing.

3

u/bahcodad 15h ago

Oh I know this one. In Canada, milk comes in bags rather than cartons or bottles. They out the bag in like a jug thing(?) And cut the top corner of the bag.

Not Canadian, I've just seen it before

2

u/N1GHTSQU1R3LL 14h ago

Nailed it! And we also have jugs and cartons. I grew up in Ontario with bags, have since moved to Alberta and it's only jugs and cartons here.

2

u/FlLocator 14h ago

Fun.. Fun Bags

1

u/CHNOS09 15h ago

Didn't they recently stop doing that?

8

u/Consistent-Hat3652 15h ago

Not only do we still have them, but we even have 6% fat milk now

1

u/itsallbullshityo 9h ago

Oh my. We can only get 3.5% where I am in Ontario.

7

u/ozmutazbuckshank 15h ago

I also use it for mail, packaging tape, strings/lines, or anything else that it makes sense for

1

u/Sea_Percentage_2004 15h ago

The most convenient tool for opening packages.

4

u/philpalmer2 15h ago

And the point on the end of the knife (to the right in the photo) is for breaking the window.

3

u/Retb14 15h ago

Additionally, the spike on the bottom is a window breaker

5

u/NoonSunReversal 15h ago

To be used in the event of being trapped after a car crash or similar?

4

u/Apprehensive_Owl7186 15h ago

Yes that’s what it’s for. Also help someone else who is trapped. Not sure why everyone is being so weird about this I feel like it wouldn’t be that obvious if you’ve never had someone tell you.

15

u/Signal-Drama7885 15h ago

If you can't extrapolate that something called a seatbelt cutter/glass smasher should be used in a car accident then maybe you shouldn't be driving.

1

u/Xnut0 12h ago

Yes, it's a great safety tool, but don't forget that this feature is also useful for opening packages. Especially boxes that have plastic straps around them, but also for cutting the cardboard/tape.
One good feature with this tool is that you will never run the risk of cutting too deep as you can accidentally do if you ram the blade into the box.
The last nifty feature is that it's very hard to cut yourself with this feature.

1

u/oneangrywaiter 8h ago

I’m sure I could injure myself with it. I get bruises in the shower.

1

u/Xnut0 8h ago

It's hard to hurt yourself, not impossible. Stay safe out there and try to avoid handling blades.

u/oneangrywaiter 8h ago

I use it for zip ties and paracord all the time

1

u/nilmot81 6h ago

Also great for cutting small cord or string

1

u/jfk333 15h ago

Also good for boots and clothes.

29

u/dorthy-rivers 15h ago

Seat belt cutter. I have used this as a "gut hook" on more than a few deer as well.

The idea is to be able to cut tensioned material like cloth, leather, straps, or strings.

Think of how a nice pare of scissor will glide through paper when positioned correctly.

The blade is inset so you cant just cut yourself but it is available in an emergency situation such as a car crash and you might not have the wherewithal or dexterity to open the knife.

11

u/deadeye619 15h ago

The indentation that you are pointing to is a strap cutter for seat belts. The point on that end is for breaking glass (to get out of a car). It’s a really nice knife and is meant to get out of a crashed car. I have one in my vehicle.

2

u/Journeyman-Joe 13h ago

I was going to say that it's good for cutting baling twine.

(I'm a horse-person.)

But I'm going to agree with "seat belt cutter", largely because the pointy part is likely a glass-breaker.

3

u/GainTraditional9809 15h ago edited 15h ago

Also for string, it’s a safety cutter feature, it’s also for places where you have to cut stuff secured with plastic string they put around stuff on pallets. there’s razor knives with that feature

6

u/aahorsenamedfriday 9h ago

I’m seeing tons of comments saying this is a seatbelt cutter with a window breaker but these are also standard features on warehouse box cutters. Both the “hook” the nub are designed to cut packing tape without cutting too deep and damaging the product inside

4

u/mrdoza 7h ago

It's the only thing our warehouse is allowed to use.

1

u/Earthalone 2h ago

Ditto, except a different brand/slightly different look, and the only tool style knife ive ever cut myself with.(clarified tool style knife since ive had a small cut with a kitchen knife before).

Seat belt cutter but I’ve learned like 80% of them don’t actually work, so maybe I would test it out first before trusting it

1

u/Kenichi_Smith 8h ago

Being that its on an actual knife I have more faith but yeah usually they are super dull. Can still be used as a safety box cutter with less risk of cutting the user and the product in the package too

6

u/Malisyn 15h ago

Cutting twine or other things rope. It would not be an effective seat belt cutter. You'd do much better opening it for that.

3

u/ComputeCommodity104 15h ago

Pretty crazy how far down this comment is, shows you how much life experience redditors really have.

6

u/Falanin 14h ago

Heh.

Yes, tons of people get into car accidents bad enough to need a strap cutter and have one on them when they do to have a truly informed opinion...

Ease off on putting people down for repeating how it's been explained to them.  Strap cutter is how these things are demonstrated and marketed.

You want to insult people, maybe do it after having shown why they're incorrect.

2

u/ComputeCommodity104 14h ago

This type of notch on a knife/blade/utility tool has been around a lot longer than seatbelts lmao

1

u/Malisyn 14h ago

Yeah, as someone that has used them at my job for the majority of my adult life, I'm well aware of what they can and can't do. The one that OP posted with the fixed blade is by far the least effective at cutting anything.

This is only my most recent one, but the one that uses the actually sharp razor is the only one I would ever use to cut twine. Not even those straps on boxes/pallets because they are usually so thick.

Hopefully those that think it's great for seat belts never rely on it, or it's at least non emergency enough they have time to actually open the blade.

2

u/ComputeCommodity104 14h ago edited 14h ago

Its so odd that people see a utility knife like this and think they're adding a notch in the manufacturing process for seat belts. Because we all know that we buy utility knifes to keep in the car just for happenstance that a seat belt needs to be cut, and not for another simple explanation. Theres a lesson in human psychology somewhere here.

2

u/HerMajestysButthole2 15h ago

Strap cutter. That could also really come in handy if you're fishing on a boat (to cut line easily)

Quite seriously, it thought I was looking at an effing skateboard. I would have bought that deck right away

1

u/NetworkEcstatic 11h ago

I have a bench made thats got the seat belt cutter and glass break in my car.

This one is much prettier

1

u/SlumxLordxMillionair 11h ago

I use it to cut the shrink wrap off of pallets. But I’m sure it could be a seatbelt cutter as well.

1

u/mjweitz 3h ago

Lines or seatbelt… you can try giving yourself a haircut, one strand at a time.

1

u/Instameat 9h ago

I use one to cut open plastic heat sealed things like water, and pop flats.

1

u/Mcmad0077 11h ago

They are usually garbage on knives like those

1

Looks like a fancy version of this:
