Finished Project Viking age cloak

Just finished weaving viking age cape for a friend ๐Ÿ™‚

I was weaving double weave double width on my Louet Jane 90cm loom ๐Ÿ™‚

Warp - 100% merino wool
Weft - 60% virgin New Zealand wool 40% mohair

10 warps per 1cm - 1664 warp in total.

Sides decorated with tablet woven bands .

Are those tablet woven selvages woven into the fabric? (Looks like it from the fringe.). That's soooo cool!

Thank you!!

No, they were woven separately and then I sewed them on ;)

I wanted to weave them on together with main fabric on the loom, but as long as it was double weave double width project - i could not fit two sets of tablets on the same side of the loom.

I could also weave on together the edge of the fabric, but I would have taken too much time and effort, so I decided to weave the bends separately and sew them on :)

It looks great! I'll admit I was trying to make sense of how to weave bands in on double weave!

Tablet bands on a double-width Viking cloak is outrageous patience โœจ

I've got in my head that I'm going to do that with my selvedges one of these days! The trick is that the tablets need to go BEHIND the beater on my floor loom and that'll be fun to figure out.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this. OP did an incredible job though, beautiful weave.

Just peeped your page too and all your stuff looks awesome! You must be a born weaver for only weaving for a year! I've only been weaving for a few months and only have a small regid heddle loom but I dream of making wool blankets and shawls one day ๐Ÿ˜Œ

Thank you for kind words!! ๐Ÿฅฐ

I have the audacity of thinking that I can do anything and this helps me to take on big project (go big or go home mentality I guess ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜…) sometimes I fail on those projects, of course, but then I try again and again and again and in the end I succeed :) So my advice would be - believe in yourself and just do it ;)

That's what weaving had taught me, just try it and even if it doesn't work out you still learned something, or you learn what you need to change to make it work. It's so peaceful and good for mental health(except for warping sometimes ๐Ÿ˜‚)

Oh yeahโ€ฆ warping sticky wool - sucks ๐Ÿ˜… also warping linen is kind of hard - hard to maintain equal tension, especially when warping alone

Diamond twill, the luxury fabric of the age. Fantastic!

so cool! how is the cloak constructed? did you have a pattern?ย

1

u/Think_Afternoon6726 Sep 06 '26

Thanks :)

Well the cloak is a simple rectangle joined with a broach at the neck :) or are you asking about the weaving pattern draft? Itโ€™s a 4 shaft broken twill, but because itโ€™s double weave double width project, I had to come op with according draft for 8 shafts. It took me quite a few failed attempts, but I got it in the end :)

2

u/taucher_ Sep 06 '26

oh okay, so just a brooch, at the upper middle i assume? ๐Ÿ‘€ that's good to know! it's quite the smart use of a rectangle.

doing a 4 shaft pattern in dobule weave does sound challenging, good job! looking at the pictures i definitely do get that sense of quality fabric :3

u/Think_Afternoon6726 Sep 06 '26

Yeah, viking age (and through middle ages I think) cloaks were usually just rectangles with broaches:)

Itโ€™s not as difficult as it looks :) took me a few times to come up with correct draft, but once it was done - itโ€™s easy :) here is my draft if you are interested. The fold is on the left side :)

Stunning! The kind of thing I aspire to do some day. Did you have to do any sewing besides the band?

1

u/Think_Afternoon6726 Sep 06 '26

Thank you! โ˜บ๏ธ

No, I sewed on only the bands. I would have needed to sew a seam in the middle, because my loom is only 90cm width, but I wove double weave double width so I wouldnโ€™t have to :)

2

u/Apprehensive_Pen69 Sep 06 '26

Absolutely stunning!!! I love this so much!
