Weekly What are you reading? - Oct 9

Welcome to the r/vns "What are you reading?" thread!

The intended purpose of this thread is to provide a weekly space to chat about whatever VN you've been reading lately. When talking about plot points, use spoiler tags liberally. If you have any doubts about whether you should spoiler something or not, use a spoiler tag for good measure. Use this markdown for spoilers: (>!hidden spoilery text!<) which shows up as hidden spoilery text. If you want to discuss spoilers for another VN as well, please make sure to mention that your spoiler tag covers another VN aside from the primary one your post is about.

In order for your post to be properly noticed for the archive, please add the VNDB page of whichever title you're talking about in your post. The archive can be found here!

So, with all that out of the way...

What are you reading?

Tsukikage no Simulacre: Kaihou no Hane – English Translation Patch (All-Ages Version)

I've made an English translation patch for the all-ages version of Tsukikage no Simulacre: Kaihou no Hane, and I'd like to share it with the community!
It's been seven years since this game was released on Steam, yet I couldn't find any English translation for it. So I decided to make one myself using GPT-6 Astra , which has pretty impressive translation capabilities. I've also personally reviewed most of the translated text and made some manual corrections and adjustments where needed. However, I may have missed some errors or awkward phrasing along the way.

Installation Instructions:

Find this patch in the general discussion of steam community of the game

Set the game's text language to Simplified Chinese.

Extract patch3.xp3 and patch2.xp3 from the ZIP file into the game's root directory (where the game executable is located).

Launch the game and enjoy!

This patch is currently intended for the all-ages version only.

Most of the game's UI elements are image-based, so they haven't been translated for now.

If you're using the R18 patch, the game should still launch without errors, but the R18-exclusive content will remain in its original language.

I'm excited to announce that the demo of Purple Limbo, my psychological horror/romance visual novel, is now available on itch.io!

What's the game about?

After a life of hopelessness and loneliness, you perform a ritual as a last resort, searching for everlasting happiness.

Instead, you find yourself surrounded by endless darkness.

Now you're trapped in Purple Limbo, bound by a purpose you don't fully understand yet.

But you're not completely alone.

You walk a dark path alongside a mysterious girl and a monolith that thirsts for blood.

Content Warning

This game contains mature themes, including death, suicide, murder, violence, captivity, drug use, bullying, emotional abuse, psychological horror, and strong language.

Please consider these warnings before playing if any of these themes may be distressing to you.

Play the demo on itch.io and Newgrounds:

https://lazarus303.itch.io/purple-limbo

I'll also be bringing Purple Limbo to Game Jolt soon, and I'm planning to release it on other platforms as well, so stay tuned for future updates!

As a solo indie developer, I'll keep working on the story as much as I can, as long as enough people enjoy it. I plan to expand it with optional branches and polish everything further. This demo serves as a teaser.

I got Nekopara during a sale and decided to give a try a few days ago but it kept popping up the notice in the photo (i deleted it so I had to save it from my old post). Someone in steamsupport sub told me to download Direct9 yet it still doesn’t launch. Should I ask for a refund??

For me Danganronpa and Ai the somnium files are my top visual novels.

Although I haven't checked out the other two games of Ai the somnium files.

Ps that doesn't mean that the visual novels I have completed aren't good it's just Danganronpa amd the 1st Ai the somnium files have a soft spot for me.

Question Differences in Little Busters Steam and Switch version?

Thumbnail

I'm playing on Switch and decided to watch a Let's Play, and then noticed that on Kurugaya's first encounter the scene is censored for some reason?

The steam version has Kurugaya making a joke about Rikki possible being gay, but the scene is watered down on Switch.

Photo 1 and 2 are the scenes on Steam and Switch, and then Photo 3 dialog doesn't even happen in the Switch game? After Photo 2, it skips to the next scene where Rikki sits on the broken chair.

So my question is... Does anyone knows what more scenes where changed/censored?

Discussion Your Next Bad Decision Awaits! |A Dark Romance VN |

Revenge brought you into the mafia. Falling for its leader could ruin everything.

Undercover Love - Where Shadows Meet, is a mafia romance visual novel.
You play as Alex, an ex-cop who goes undercover after her sister’s murder. Choose your love interest and step into a story of revenge, secrets, and forbidden romance.

The game features comic panels, animations, and partial voice acting for Alex.

Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4713130/Undercover_Love__Where_Shadows_Meet/
The demo is live on Steam. Come meet your next bad decision.

I made this little teaser to give you a taste of what awaits. Why the comic style?

- I’ve been thinking about using a black-and-white manga style for certain panels and animated moments where the mood gets darker or more dangerous, so I took some of the in-game artwork and tried it out!

What do you think? Would you enjoy that change in style, or would you prefer everything to stay in full color?

Meta Survey on Denpa for an academic project

https://forms.gle/zV4tzsosDBmt7Eag6

Hello! I’m preparing for a seminar on horror video games. My focus is on denpa as a genre. For this reason, I’d like to invite you to take a short survey (8-12) minutes) on the themes, aesthetics, and your experience as consumers of this medium.

The questions are relatively simple and basic (so even if you're new to this, you can still fill it out). I am not collecting any personal information about you, other than your answers to the questions (it’s possible that responses containing personal information may have to be deleted and/or excluded). I have no personal gain from this survey; I am conducting this research solely out of a passion for academia and for the medium.

Thank you in advance for your time and for every response! : )

Recommendation Romance VNs with (relatively) minimal fanservice?

Hey! I love visual novels, and I'd really like to get some of my family members into them.

However: as they’re not SUPER into anime or manga, I'm trying to start with stuff like, say, Danganronpa.

That being said…while they can handle some fanservice (and just laugh it off), anything too excessive would probably overwhelm them.

(Was just reading Aokana, yesterday. While a fun story, there's plenty of fanservice, and an extensive conversation about pantsu, even in the censored release. That’s the kind of thing I'm trying to avoid, for now)

So…besides VNs with no H-scenes to begin with, what are some that they may like? Key springs to mind, as relatively tame, but what else?

Please only suggest games with either a censored English release or a toggle option, for H-scenes

(preferably where the H-scenes aren’t overly important. Katawa Shoujo, for instance, wouldn’t be the same without them, particularly in a few routes)

Discussion How much artwork do you expect from a 7-hour VN?

Hi guys!

Since I'm working on my first VN I'm curious about what players generally expect from a paid visual novel in terms of visual content.

For a visual novel with around 7 hours of playtime, what would you consider a reasonable amount of:

• Unique backgrounds

• Character sprites

• Animated characters (e.g. Live2D models)

Would you expect a game to have mostly static sprites, or would individually animated characters make a noticeable difference to you?

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Question new to visual novels, where to start?

hello! as the title says, i've taken an interest in visual novels but i have no idea where to start or which ones i should play.

i've heard a few like little busters, and the majorly popular ones like danganronpa, ddlc, and ace attorney. i have played none of these, though. i think the closest thing i've ever played to a visual novel is the story/event parts of yu-gi-oh duel links.

genre: for starters, i don't want anything 18+ or erotic, please. and i know that romance is huge in the vn community, so i think asking for no romance would be a tall order.. so, if you must suggest romance, only BL/MLM, or a VN that has romance but isn't the focus. i also like light-hearted stories, so i don't want to play anything very depressing, dark, or anything that would go into the horror genre. i'm okay with ones that may be eerie, but not necessarily horrific, and does not have jumpscares, or only contains mild jumpscares. i'm okay with games that include death or murder, or games that may discuss mental illness.

gameplay: i'd like to play a visual novel where there are choices, and they matter (somewhat). i'm okay with playing something like ace attorney and danganronpa, where there is only one ending, and technically, your choices don't actually weigh into anything and it's more like a quiz. but i'd prefer a VN where there are multiple endings and different choices that result in different outcomes, and gameplay other than just picking and choosing options, so maybe something like homicipher? (for those who don't know, homicipher includes a mechanic where you slowly figure out an unknown language by entering in what you believe the word may mean as you go along in the game.) - i think what i'm referring to is called a hybrid visual novel.

other/extra: i don't care whether it's a VN that you can insert yourself into (VNs you can enter your name and other details into, and the characters directly interact with "you"), or a VN where you are a predetermined existing character.

preferably english VNs or japanese VNs that were translated to english.

availability: only PC VNs, please! and, i'd prefer if they were free but it's fine if not.

i'm sorry if my preferences are excessive, it's okay if you go outside of some of the specifications

Discussion first small success

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hey, I want to share something. A while back, I released a demo for my visual novel, and I never expected it to show up on someone's YouTube channel especially with only 19 downloads. It’s also really interesting to me that someone actually recommended my game to that creator during a stream. What do you guys think about something like this? Would you count it as a small success, or just luck?

For anyone interested, the game is on itch.io under the title "The Brothers Secret."

Release I made a complete English patch for the PS1 version of Tokimeki Memorial: Forever with You

Hi, I’ve made a complete English patch for the PS1 version of Tokimeki Memorial: Forever with You using Claude Opus 5.5.

Some more screenshots/videos on my twitter account: https://x.com/gothamor

Link: https://github.com/gothamor/tokimeki-memorial-english-patch

If you’re like me, you watched Tim Rogers’ video on Tokimeki Memorial years ago and have been waiting for an English patch ever since. I’ve tried translations of other versions of the game and other tools that didn't directly patch the game, but I always wanted to play the PS1 one, since it’s widely considered the best, definitive version.

Lately I’ve also seen a lot of endless slop clips on Twitter of two games mashed together, or a decomp of some console exclusive. I recently bought a claude subscription, and I wanted to see if AI could make something like this. And , well, this is the result.

What’s translated

  • About 30,000 lines of text: every girl’s dates, special events, phone calls, walks home, the culture festival, school trip, training camp, Christmas, Valentine’s, White Day, New Year’s, birthdays, club contests, and all the endings and epilogues
  • Menus, the album and save screens, name entry, options, the stat panel and calendar, and the in-game settings
  • Graphics: menu labels, the battle menu on the school trip, sports day cards, Town News headlines, and more
  • A custom renderer hook that draws a narrower English font, so more text fits in the dialogue boxes

How to use it

  • You need your own copy of the game: Tokimeki Memorial: forever with you, PlayStation the Best, SLPM-86053, as a redump-style BIN/CUE. I’m not providing the game.
  • Install Python 3.8 or newer then run python -m tokipatch yourgame.cue.
  • The patcher never touches your original files. It writes a patched copy to a new folder, open that version's cue file in your emulator and enjoy.

I don't speak Japanese, so I can't speak to how authentic the translation is to the original, however there's instructions on github on how others might want to contribute. There's also a huge writeup in the docs that explains more of the internals of the game for anyone wanting to learn more about how this was done.

Enjoy, and good luck winning Shiori's heart.
