Discussion / Question What game is this for you?

Post image

Honestly for me it's Life is Strange: True Colors. Love that game to death, an incredible story and soundtrack, but it seems like a story that just doesn't vibe well with a lot of people. Listen to the soundtrack though, absolutely increible.

DBD was super duper fun when it first came out and no one knew what anyone was doing.

Running around with friends screaming your head off with friends while the killer chases the group while they themselves also not knowing what they were doing led to many intense "near miss" moments (or what felt like it since even the killer swinging the weapon was like a scary visual back then); and funny moments where either your friend or the killer would get stuck on a corner somewhere.

Once the game matured and the min maxers came into play - then everything just became solely about winning instead of the experience itself; and those who were just there for a good time also slowly left, leaving all the sweats in the community.

I also experienced this with Marvel Rivals.

It's just unfortunate that all competitive games see this kind of trajectory. The wild west when a game first comes out is always the most fun.

Sadly meta destroys pvp gameplay. That and exploit abusers. I guess now survivors are abusing glitches where blinding the killer mid-hook forces disconnect. At this point, DBD is best if you got a group of friends to play custom matches with

11

u/seguardon Sep 04 '26

Meta is such a bad thing to any kind of pvp. Creativity goes out the window because optimized solutions exist. And if you're in ranked, that mentality trickles down to the lowest levels. I tend towards the lower tiers in pvp games and saw people trashing one another for picking off meta options all the time. Everytime I thought "Who in their right mind thinks the meta is relevant at this level."

11

u/Jester-Joe Sep 04 '26

I mean, it's even in PvE with World of Warcraft.

Despite that every single class and spec can do a majority of the content, people just want to copy the top 1% without realizing WHY the top 1% runs the combinations they do

5

u/MaxtheHax12345678907 Sep 05 '26

or helldivers, though in that the meta is so boring that picking what's not the meta is much better

2

u/unicornhair1991 Sep 06 '26

Sheep mentality. Even for misery

2

u/persephone7821 Sep 04 '26

They hotfixed that today.

15

u/Nintaiwaitsistaken Sep 04 '26

Same with early LoL. I loved playing Taric and being able to swap to AP carry if needed or playing top lane Udyr and the opponents being confused that you weren't using standard active abilities. A few of my buddies liked doing mid lane bruisers and just bullying the lane out. The classic 5mogs Mundo was one of the silliest builds. Singed being a guy you can't really ignore but if you chase him you'll never catch him and you'll die in the process.

Hell, you can make the same argument for MTG or WH40K. The meta ruins any game or at least reduces it to rock paper scissors.

I played Lol for about a year way back when there were only 40 champs (The last champ released before I left was some dragon lady that came out a little bit after Karma). Janna was my ride or die bestie! I rotated through about 20 champs depending on my mood (Morgana, LeBlanc, Taric, Malphite, Cho Gath, Poppy, and others that I'm not remembering; I never got good with any ranged AD carries), but Janna was always my best girl.

As much as miss her, I will NEVER touch Lol again. The community is just toxic trash.

1

u/unicornhair1991 Sep 06 '26

Ohhhh dragon lady. I think sylvana?

I am 13 years sober from LoL. The community was the most toxic ive ever seen. Worse when they got rid of community tribunal

2

u/CarolingianDruid Sep 04 '26

Playing Singed in early league was one of my favorites. Absorb the aggro, flip the AD carry back to your team, and poison them all!

1

u/SirSblop Sep 04 '26

Oh god, YuGiOh is worse than both. They're reaching "did you win the coin flip to determine who takes their turn first?" type of meta.

2

u/AlterBridgeFan Sep 04 '26

Something, something, YGO = CoD:MW2

1

u/VoidFullOfDreams Sep 04 '26

People will literally lose their mind and ragequit if they see someone trying things that is out of the meta. Pathetic.

1

u/AlterBridgeFan Sep 04 '26

Riot released LoL classic, which is a weird mix of the early seasons (S4 is the latest they'll go). Old runes, old champions, old masteries, and old graphics. Not sure how good it is, but maybe old Taric is in there.

1

u/Beginning_Ocelot503 Sep 09 '26

I’m several years sober from league but my friends still mention my legendary Braum top that came out from time to time.

10

u/Nerd-Dad-2779 Sep 04 '26

Dude yes! Siege and OW were both released closely and it was when my buddy and I both had our 4’s hooked up in college and god damn it was so fun. Then two years later and I don’t think either of us were playing overwatch and siege was strictly casual lol

1

u/Burbursur Sep 04 '26

Yeah I think Overwatch just morphed into a glorified game of rock paper scissors overtime.

1

u/Nerd-Dad-2779 Sep 04 '26

It did! A friend of mine became so obsessed with different team comps and “only this dive team will work but only sometimes”

23

u/Candaphlaf10 Sep 04 '26

Hard agree with Rivals. Now I only play a couple weeks after a new character comes out.

1

u/ElkSad9855 Sep 04 '26

A character comes out every few weeks so.. you play it non stop?

5

u/St_Arcade Sep 04 '26

No.

I think they play like me.

New character drops.

Wait a few days, if not a week, then play enough to handle the battle pass, then hop off because the time cruncher sweats start hopping on before the new season.

I only really aim to land in Diamond. I don’t care for anything above that or below high Gold.

I also only buy one costume a month, if that.

22

u/Alric_Wolff Sep 04 '26

This was Pokémon Champions for me. The idea of an online Pokémon Stadium/Colliseum type game was great at first, but since its not the full roster of pokemon, its actually quite limited, eventually people figured out what the meta was and when you get to be a high enough rank, every opponent has the same pokemon and its super lame. It was good for like a month and that was about it.

17

u/hippie_harlot Sep 04 '26

In all fairness, this is roughly how the VGC is anyway. You have seasonal formats that restrict usage, and in that ecosystem the top 10 teams are usually copy/paste of each other. 30 years and almost 10 generations of iteration, all for a sort of stagnation

2

u/ElkSad9855 Sep 04 '26

You mean to tell me the VGC replacer plays exactly like the VGC? Wild take

0

u/PokeHobnobGod21 Sep 04 '26

I was hoping it would be more like showdown

3

u/Dismal-Button4596 Sep 04 '26

I’ll always remember the days before Splitgate got really sweaty. It was a short time but damn was it a good time

2

u/Burbursur Sep 04 '26

HOLYSHIT YES SPLITGATE WAS RLY FUN

Blew my mind that the game was literally using multiple portal entities in real-time without major issues.

2

u/SafetySnowman Sep 04 '26

When I do play DBD I try and hook a couple times and then let everyone go. The exception is when people are constantly running circles around me, outpacing me no matter what I do, turn a corner and suddenly they're far off in that split second it took for me to also turn the corner and I'm left to wonder if I remembered wrong and there's suddenly two survivors with the same unique outfit in the match.

I'm still learning killers, and very much still learning survivors. I don't know what perk it is that makes people zoom so fast but I recall one that increases speed for a few seconds after being damaged?
So that one isn't it but . . . ugh.

When stuff like that happens I just . . . punish everyone and feel like an ass after.

I really do just prefer to give people a few good scares, a few good chases, and let everyone go. I figure even if I sacrifice everyone as long as it's after they've been able to get enough points then who even cares about a win or a loss?

As for Rivals? I just want to finish up the few hero trophies I need to get the plat but yeah I honestly don't care about it anymore. It stinks because I had every season pass up until like December or January, there was a new one. Hellfire maybe? I can't even remember because I stopped buying them because every match seemed to be just . . . enemy team holding tanks on frontlines and everyone else getting snowballed at spawn.

That isn't fun. I've tried it myself and it's not even fun to do to others I don't understand the mindset required to do that crap.

Really like both those games and wish I could keep supporting them but I just didn't see myself playing either long term.

I do still play Rocket League and League of Legends I like them both. They both have massive flaws and a lot of those have to do with some of the less desirable members of the community. Toxic players. Usually either the least impactful players or the most impactful but those who are clearly incapable of playing with a team . . . or maybe it would be better to say without a team pulling their butts out of messes they wouldn't be able to handle alone?

The amount of times I've seen someone trash talk after baiting their own team in LoL, or bumping their tm who had complete possession of a ball only to lead to opponents scoring or even an own goal . . . it's baffling. More so because how do they not realize that it's always the worst players talking trash?
If I notice someone could use some advice I wait until after the game and say, "Hey I noticed you were crowding your tms a bit, bumping them away from possession or a play, there's some good vids on rotation and positioning if you'd like?"

I used to offer suggestions to anyone if I saw they could do something better. My reasoning for doing that in both LoL and RL is if I have to play with those people on my team I'd rather they'd be better than they were before.

Even just a bit. Even knowing basic rotation and positioning in RL, or helping someone realize that wards are there to be used in LoL, even just those two simple additions to someone's play is huge and can help to improve the game.

I don't have a clue how to make DBD more fun. Nothing I say or do will change that some people are just sweaty and want their opponents and sometimes even their allies to have as bad of an experience as possible. Saving clips and sharing them in reports if it's blockers. That's all I can think of.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk ig 😅

2

u/Jirachi720 Sep 04 '26

Unfortunately all multiplayer games are like this. When it's new it's great because no one knows what the best character/gear/weapon/class or whatever is so everyone will try everything. Then the fog drops and you get a feeling for what is best to use and then everyone starts running the exact same gear until new content drops or balance changes cause the meta to move. Rinse and repeat ad infinitum.

I enjoy multiplayer games, but unfortunately if it's PvP it will always be cursed with a meta.

2

u/Moses015 Sep 04 '26

Sweats just destroy everything good and it’s so sad

2

u/Awhite-guy Sep 04 '26

Fun, non-competetive game: exists

Youtubers: "Let me teach you what you have to do to win every single match"

2

u/callmecurlyfries Sep 04 '26

So basically it felt more like you were actually in a horror movie which is funny because that was the original goal of the game. In my opinion it was solid up until like 2021 that’s around the time I got fatigued and stopped playing for a long time until they released chucky. I hopped back on for like a month then uninstalled it for good lmao

1

u/Burbursur Sep 04 '26

Horror movie comment is actually so accurate its ridiculous.

I am so lucky I recorded the first time my friends and I played DBD and edited it into a video.

We were basically screaming every 5 seconds till our throats were hoarse.

Fast forward to modern day DBD and it's about "tech" and "perks" and its just... Idk - not the experience I am looking for in any game.

But I must say the devs really did adapt well to the community as it changed - it really goes to show how live service games are actually living, breathing ecosystems.

One of the rare few games which I feel like a live service model is a actually a good use case for them.

1

u/callmecurlyfries Sep 04 '26

I mean the game is still not entirely dead which means they’re doing something right 😂

2

u/DrPhDPickles Sep 08 '26

Used to play doc and zap the shit out of people for fun. Boy did I get people mad with that 😂😂

1

u/Zventibold Sep 04 '26

When I played as the killer and was in a position to win, I often let the survivors win. I've always thought it was more fun for the others to win by a narrow margin—it makes for memorable games that you'll remember for a long time.

1

u/random_blue_elf Sep 04 '26

honestly so many games get ruined by sweats, I think that's why games where you have to work together like lethal company got more popular since you can't get killed by some sweat who plays it 24hours

1

u/VoidFullOfDreams Sep 04 '26

Dbd is just most boring game in the genre. Repair gens, run loops around objects. The entire gameplay. I don't know a single person who tried something like Resistance or Evil Dead and still would consider dbd an interesting game.

1

u/Global-Midnight471 Sep 04 '26

I get 4 other people together on DBD and we play it as a drinking game since there are 5 of us we just vibe in customs and chill its made the game the best money ive ever spent whereas the online its just tedious but fun if you turn your mind away from the wanting to win

1

u/RiKSh4w Sep 04 '26

It's a lot easier to just skip PvP entirely. No more worrying about patch notes, practicing, toxic opponents. It's freeing.

1

u/yugimugi Sep 04 '26

Bobby Fischer has entered the chat

1

u/zsert93 Sep 04 '26

This is how I feel about almost every multiplayer game.

1

u/Burbursur Sep 05 '26

I feel you.

Truth be told it's also why I stopped playing multiplayer altogether.

At most I'll play co-op.

It's just unfortunate that my group of friends really enjoy competitive shooters for some reason, which is why I play with them less nowadays.

1

u/wats_a_tiepo Sep 04 '26

I’m having this experience with Outlast Trials rn. Me and a few friends are having a blast having no idea what we’re doing.

Took us 75 mins to complete a single mission yesterday due to a potent combination of running like fuck every time we even glimpsed an enemy, refusing to come out from under the bed we’re hiding under and having zero clue how to complete the objective.

Highly recommend

1

u/Illigalmangoes Sep 04 '26

Killer side of this is also brutal. Used to just feel like I was an actual horror character chasing down a group of teens in a slasher movie. Now if I’m not running the best perks I loose if I don’t stare at a wall when I pick people up I lose and if I let someone go because I don’t want to tunnel I often lose. I just want to be a slasher again :(

1

u/Burbursur Sep 05 '26

Yeah I feel u - back when I played DBD when I played solo I always played killer.

Only when I played with friends then I would play as a human.

1

u/skilking Sep 04 '26

I played it a year ago with friends in private matches and it was a lot of fun. Then the played it solo and I never touched the game since

1

u/b3tamaxx Sep 04 '26

Min max culture is why Classic WoW didn't hit the same with Wrath. I remember the boat ride to Howling Fjord being an amazing experience in 08. Shit when I got off it for Classic people were lining up for gear score checks

1

u/sora2210 Sep 05 '26

Man the "super duper fun" was extremely rare since you had to wait in the matchmaking for nearly an hour to be in a killer's lobby lmao, the famous "matchmaking simulator". The fact we never considered it shit back then was because they offered us the moon. "We will add free DLCS throughout the development!", they added two before making everything either paid DLC or grinding hell. "You think killers are not scary anymore? Play something else, try Civilization or something", this has been said by the Behavior director and the live rediffusion of it still exists btw. The only explanation of why it still working? It's Fortnite ✨ but with killers ✨

1

u/ResponsibleStep8725 Sep 05 '26

Pretty much the case with every PVP game. League of Legends is a really cool game, but I can't be bothered to get into it because of how serious people take it.

1

u/Ichmag11 Sep 08 '26

Just depended who you played against. I already played against "min-maxers" in the second day of the beta

1

u/RamJamR Sep 09 '26

Yeah, for some reason so many people become so concerned with spending so much time and effort figuring out some meta gameplay to crack the game and ensure wins with no room for failure. Trying to win creates a reason to even play, but if winning is everything and people don't enjoy the game simply for the enjoyment of playing it, then why put themselves through the misery?

0

u/BUBBALOVESCONNIE Sep 04 '26

So you expect people to play a game and try to lose just so you can have fun?????

1

u/Burbursur Sep 04 '26

Please point out and quote word for word where exactly in my comment I said that.

Thanks.

7

u/Fifty-Lucky Sep 04 '26

It becomes so incredibly easy, I'm sober years now, since before Sadako, sometimes I think about the game then have this euphoric feeling of saying fuck no ill be happy instead

6

u/StarlessEon Sep 04 '26

Reinstalled the other day for nostalgia, played maybe 5 games. Its not for me anymore, hell no.

9

u/DestructiveFate Sep 04 '26

Still is dead by daylight for me unfortunately, I can never quit it’s an addiction.

4

u/Fifty-Lucky Sep 04 '26

You'll get there one day

1

u/marcmanonlyme Sep 09 '26

I maybe replaced one addiction with another, but helldivers 2 got me clean right away. FOR LIBERTY!!!

1

u/Phlebbie Sep 04 '26

Same, I can't give it up fully. I still have fun with it

3

u/Legal_Piglet9390 Sep 04 '26

Same, i started playing 2021 and gave up last year tbh. They arent seeming to be pulling it back either

3

u/Hologram_Bee Sep 04 '26

Once I dropped DBD my mental health skyrocketed

3

u/UncleBensRacistRice Sep 04 '26

Ive been sober from DBD for so long that I had almost forgotten about it until I saw this comment.

Absolutely would not reccomend this game to anyone who actually wants to have fun while gaming. It was fun at the start despite how broken it was, I started when there were only 3 killers in the game. The min/maxing destroyed any fun that could have been had

5

u/OldschoolGreenDragon Sep 04 '26

Have you heard the good news of lord and savior Outlast Trials?

1

u/IveHair Sep 04 '26

There’s nothing these two games have in common though I don’t really understand the correlation.

1

u/OldschoolGreenDragon Sep 04 '26

4v1, horror, superior art , stealth actually works, and less likely to get doxxed by community Nazis (which happened to my friend.)

1

u/IveHair Sep 04 '26

4 versus 1 AI, and DBD is very loosely horror at this point. The rest are differences.

5

u/FireFoxUse Sep 04 '26

Still me. But haven't found anything better

2

u/No-Examination4896 Sep 04 '26

Im 18 months Old School Runescape sober

1

u/BJ_hunnicut Sep 05 '26

You'll be back

2

u/TastesLikeTerror Sep 04 '26

Stay strong brother! 8 months for me.

2

u/unicornhair1991 Sep 06 '26

I used to stream it. I was never huge but had a decent following. Im 2 years sober from twitch and DBD now.

Life has vastly improved 😭

We need a DBD anonymous group lol

2

u/ObliviouslyDrake67 Sep 08 '26

I shitpost in the subreddit but I've not touched it in years.

I likened it to an abusive relationship and lost the taste for it.

2

u/HoopyFroodJera Sep 09 '26

Retired killer main. I'm happier away. I see the dead eyes of the fog whisperers and know it's gotten even worse in my absence.

2

u/RedPon3 Sep 04 '26

Slate's Killer Tournament is my annual connection to the game

2

u/Rhidds Sep 04 '26

6 yr player and approaching 4k hours. I still have fun in DBD. I play to win but kinda on my own terms. I don't bug abuse, never bring anti tunnel, rarely exhaustion. If a match isn't going in my favour I give myself little win cons, or attempt to meme while embracing my death.

Mates seem to feel so pigeonholed into certain builds because their desire to win is paramount to their enjoyment, and then they get bored because they're also not doing anything to shake it up.

I think my playstyle as well as playing other games to shake it up is why it's still a fun game to me. I'd never, ever suggest someone to play it though. It's so beginner unfriendly and seen too many people get sucked in and just become the worst version of themselves.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '26

[deleted]

2

u/Rhidds Sep 04 '26

Oh no, there's definitely valid reason to quit or take a break. I think more people should do it who play the game. I can also not imagine playing DBD completely solo. As a killer I know I'd take it too personally the tbags and as surv it's just misery. The main reason I come back is to talk nonsense on vc with mates, have an amazing or a funny match and just chill.

I'm terribly sorry to hear that you had to turn off messaging. I'm an ancient woman who played in the glory days of wow, did CS and other online pvp games, been told to go back to the kitchen plenty of times. The playerbase in DBD is definitely special in comparison to say the least. I've not had anything overly horrible done or said to me directly (some light humping or the casual KYS ><), but I've known plenty that have had creepy and alarming stuff told to them. That would be the other reason I'd not suggest the game to anyone.

On a side note, we had a 14 yr kid as a legion recently. He was on steam and had an open profile. He might've been lying about their age, it is the internet after all, but people still left the most horrific comments on his profile.... and all I could think is where the hell are his parents and how shameful the people were to wish literal death on a child. Disgusting.

1

u/Coveinant Sep 04 '26

Ice Nine Kills made a song about it. That is the extent of my knowledge. I'm sorry if you relapse because of it.

1

u/Careless-Emergency85 Sep 04 '26

Ice Nine Kills is so good. Meat & Greet is probably my favorite

1

u/Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter Sep 04 '26

I'm playing casual again because I have some new friends who have just started and with the MMR reset, playing together has been a bast honestly

1

u/GRIDZ___ Sep 04 '26

Ive relapsed

1

u/orbofcat Sep 04 '26

i quit for two years then recently a friend got it…

Its saving grace is story mode, I played TCM when it launched and it was perfect before reddit complaints roll through. Gun does all communication on here and it fucked their games.

1

u/SouthernStrigoi Sep 06 '26

Man... No shade but HOW can anyone play that game? I got it the day it came out and it was good for a few weeks and when I went back to it a couple months ago it dead ass felt like a mobile game with worst controls than I remember and soooo janky. What keeps the fanbase even playing? The characters would be all I can see... "Oh this game's dog ass but at least i get to play as "insert horror guy here" "!! I swore it off when they started releasing DLC with busted ass perks.

1

u/gfunk1369 Sep 04 '26

Oh my god yes! I played that game since launch fairly consistently and 90% of the time spent in it was frustrating as hell. I definitely got my money's worth but would not convince anyone to play it because of the pure levels of frustration from cheap killers.

Not the person you're replying to.

From what I've seen and heard about high level DBD it basically turns into "can the survivors turbo bully the killer?". If the answer is yes the match is played as normal and the killer has a bad time, if the answer is no the survivors all leave and the killer gets an empty victory.

I only recently started playing again, now as survivor, and my biggest problem is that there are no people of my skill level left.

It's sweats vs sweats with my dumbass caught in the middle. Only reason I can get out alive is because I have a buddy who has played for way longer.

Killer was absolutely miserable because the survivors were literally running circles around me while I had no idea what I was even doing on an account that was maybe an hour old.

Skill based matchmaking is non-existant and the fact I wanted to main Deathslinger probably didn't help.

0

u/Adventurous_Path5783 Sep 04 '26

I mean my first time i got a 4k. Deathslinger is absolutely not a beginner especially not on controller (idk what you play). Either way survivors DCing leaves bots that still give blood points and also bots can't "bully" you. So that honestly works out.

It's also a role where you literally cannot be harmed, only stunned. Plenty of people play killer and are fine. Even new people. I guess it's a good role for weeding out the softer players who feel entitled to kills.

You're faster, unkillable, usually have an op map traversal skill and have hex totem perks, can block exit gates after opened, legion literally pretty much has wall hacks and can fast vault like a survivor for example.

It's literally just scary movie branded tag. When I play as survivor I actually prefer when my dumbass teammate that was just hiding in the corner DCs. The bot is literally better than an average survivor.

Sounds like killer mains just don't like the game and are toxic about it. Probably why the original dude quit playing or responding. Luckily I have the energy for it.

1

u/Futur3_ah4ad Sep 04 '26

Probably why the original dude quit playing or responding

Not sure who you mean by this.

Sounds like killer mains just don't like the game and are toxic about it.

Most of what I see is that it doesn't matter how the killer plays, it's never "good" and they always get flamed no matter how good or bad they do.

You do something resembling slugging (even if you're just chasing a second dude for one hit before returning to hook)? "Slugging is cringe, BHVR should ban people like you".

You play someone largely static like Trapper optimally? "Camping is cringe, BHVR should ban people like you".

There doesn't seem to be any winning on the killer's side. Hell, BHVR outright admitted to nerfing and wanting to further nerf the newest killer so that quote "survivor players can stream and make jokes with their chat".

Because how dare the game demand you to actually pay attention, right?

0

u/Adventurous_Path5783 Sep 04 '26

I never said survivors aren't useless. I even said I after get the opposite.

Slugging can be part of a strategy but I hardly see it get used for anything other than gloating at the end instead of just killing me and letting me get to the next match.

If slugging is used for that strategy then that means I can get revived before I get a hook. Which is waaaaaay better than a hook as most people agree. Which is why most people never say shot about it in that context.

A lot of survivor mains never play killer and are just angry rodents ready to jump in chat and bitch and moan. You just die sometimes regardless of skill level.

I hardly ever see the survivors actually bitch on reddit though. Or online anywhere. It's literally always the entitled killers who lack any kind of self awareness.

If behavior does that I support it because they probably face harassment from petty killer mains all the time. I'd do it if I had a useless portion of my fan base. Their numbers wouldn't even go down then.

This is why when I play competitive games where im able to kill I like it to be something where both parties can. Because there is nothing weaker than people signing up to be it when they play tag complaining about it being hard. Brother just pop noed.

Jason came out and people were doing so great with him. Killing me and my pals multiple times. I figured I could get on reddit and see a lot less crying or maybe that the survivors would be crying this time.

Classic killer mains were there to make sure everyone knew they could even cry about how hard it was to win or how someone escaped through the hatch. Incredible.

Collapsed comments on multiple threads and I finally found someone say "nerf jason ffs." Didn't agree but I gave him an upvote anyways lol.

As opposed to the average survivor main who disconnects and tells people to off themselves after they go down for the first time, or when they win they'll rub it in the killers face and also tell them to off themselves. Oh, the ever stoic and compassionate survivor main, what a virtue. Killer mains should just take the BHVR survivor favoritism up the ass and smile, no complaining allowed.
