There are a looot of plotholes infinite invites to the entire entire serie (kinda the downside of including interdimensional travel in your canon). Also people expected more from the floating cities. I still also like it tho
There was also the issue of the dlc retconning everything from the previous 2 titles into being Elizabeth's fault instead of Andrew Ryan's. But for the most part the whole multidimensional and time travel plot basically erased half the story in favor of "we just jumped to the desired outcome". Otherwise the combat was good and mechanics were incredibly polished.
Nah. It's just expectations vs reality
I played it and had fun. But Then i watched the trailers and thought, damn did i just play the demo or something? Do i need to unlock an open world feature?
People were genuinely thinking they'd get much more
Yeah, the problem wasn't the game, but it's marketing. They promised so much that they didn't deliver. The game was very very good. But there was souch hype and unrealized promise.
It's actually well known and I am surprised that people wonder about the bad rep it had.
Have you ever seen the fanbase talk about it? Infinite was and still is pretty divisive, and for good reason. It's a huge departure from the first two games, and that's going to leave a sour taste in many people's mouths.
Yeah it felt like a regression, copying what other shooters were doing with only being able to carry two guns and it's not like you can unlock and carry more cause they got rid of the Weapon Wheel too, and did a bad universe hopping story. Just as an example, Booker was supposed to get a shipment of guns, but they're already gone. Elizabeth can open a rift where the guns are still there and is told they can't come back if they go through the rift. They go through the rift, get the guns but he contacts the Vox Populi and is surprised they don't have a deal any more? Booker this isn't the same timeline where you made that deal! This stuff has been explained! Like What the hell?
The 2 guns thing was a huge issue and the arenas. The game is split into “walk around and interact with environment to listen to some tapes and listen to Booker/Elizabeth chatter” and “locked into an arena and fight 3 waves of enemies.” Over and over and over. It just got repetitive. It’s so easy to just use the same 2 guns and same power (I just used bucking bronco non-stop), I feel like Bioshock 1/2 give you a nice arsenal and set of powers so that you can plan your fights better and more creatively. Infinite has none of that.
I have a lot of issues with the story but I feel like it’s just easier to start with the gameplay.
Say what you want about the story, but gameplay-wise it's absolutely a departure. You're severely limited in every way, from build customization, to only letting you hold 2 guns at a time like it's Call of Duty or something. The level design is also way more linear, you're always just walking in a straight line.
I dig Infinite, but anyone with a brain can see that it's quite a bit different from the first two games.
Similar to people hating on GTA6 after the trailer; that game will still make a couple billion dollars.
Or to use an example closer to my home; I was bitching a lot about the pricetag and trading shortcomings for Pokémon FireRed for the Switch and still bought it and loved it.
Ngl the BioShock 1 DLC just... right away felt so off
BioShock 1+2 was known for its massively impressive water graphics and physics, logically so being a game set underwater
Infinite entirely lacked that aquatic wow factor, but it made sense. It was in the sky, last I checked there aren't oceans in the sky, so it was forgivable. Why put so much attention into something so meaningless to the game, after all
But then... the BioShock 1 DLC. It simply just... didn't do the aquatic look justice. It felt wrong, it missed the little things that truly added to the BioShock 1 atmosphere, things Infinite didn't have to worry about before it tried to be BioShock 1 again
Yes, metacritic tends to be a good representation of the average opinion, and that's especially true for such high scores as Infinite has.
Am I saying everyone loves infinite? of course not, but I do believe it's detached from reality to believe that opinion represents anything even remotely close to a majority.
And if for some reason you have personal beef with metacritic scores, take a look at any other widely used rating system. Hell even steam user reviews are very positive.
Infinite has the unfortunate curse of being a great game for it's time in a series with two of the greatest games of all time.
Edit: I looked it up and it's called Sham's curse. Refers to one of the fastest racing horses in history that had the rotten luck of being born at the same time as Secretariat, the fastest horse in history.
I've met a few people that don't like it because it doesn't have that "creepy" factor. The game also limits how you engage enemies considering you can only have 2 weapons, while the first 2 you can "plan" with traps and such. 100 percented all of them, I would say the second one is my favorite, but they're all great in their own way.
It's all because of their E3 gameplay trailer and what they said would be in the game. Way too ambitious. I think, if I'm correct, they claimed that Columbia would be open world and explorable and there would be huge freedom in how you navigate combat.
I really liked it when it came out, but I never heard much about that. The consoles at the time would not be able to handle what they actually planned for it.
I'm pretty excited for Judas. Ken Levine's line up is really solid imo and I'll probably eat up anything he puts out.
It faces a lot of criticism nowadays compared to when it came out. I never got super into bioshock but I can say I enjoyed 1 and 2 far more. Although that and the fact that my favourite one was bioshock 2 kinda makes me an outliar tho
point is "a lot" is just a vocal minority. I do not believe that the general consensus is bad. Are there people with complaints? sure. do they represent anything even remotely close to the majority? oh hell no not even remotely close.
There is a loud subset of fans that have grown to hate infinite. I personally rank it as one of my favorites and there are certainly contradictions and plot holes. But it’s one of those things where I think people watched one critique that pointed it out and now they love to bring it up. But infinite to this day probably has one of the best assists characters in any game. I have not played a game since where the the partner Npc is as integral and as useful as Elizabeth
Lots of people bagged on it at the time. I loved it. It’s my favorite, so I remember defending it against people. The most common criticism was that it wasn’t dark or edgy enough.
It received and receives a lot of hate for its admittedly obtuse storyline. Cool concept but hard to implement and led to a lot of plot-holes. That being said I started with infinite and love that game, got me into the other Bioshocks
personally think its kinda meh, i still enjoy it though and have fun, either way im hoping the series comes back in force again, ive heard rumors of a sequal but its been kinda murky
I agree with you man. Bioshock 1 as beginning had a huge new mechanic added. Bioshock infinite as the last element of franchise was the peak. What else do we want from a franchise.
As far as the story goes, incredible. As far as the gameplay goes, and this is my issue with the DOOM(2016) sequels as well, the sequel deviated from the original gameplay. It's a totally different game, which is fine, it's just not what I would call true to its roots.

Bioshock. Idc what people say about infinite, I thought it was an incredible game along with the others.
