Warcraft. It started out strong with Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and moved through Warcraft 2 and 3 and then World of Warcraft, the most popular MMORPG of all time. WoW is still going strong despite the naysayers.
WoW has had some crazy ups and down in terms of quality, though. Legion may be the best expac of all time, while BfA and especially SL were awful. SL is actually irredeemable. DF was good and TWW was fine, but Midnight has been very blah so far.
I honestly thought I was gonna be a lifer, especially after legion. But then bfa was basically legion systems with watered down results. Shadowlands outright disrespected the idea that you had a life outside of it. By the time df came around most of my friends had stopped playing and I didn't even finish the campaign.
Yep. I quit for a year in the middle of BfA when my friends couldn’t take it anymore. We came back for the last patch and the beginning of SL. I think you described SL perfectly. I quit for a year in that expac, too. I have played consistently since the last patch of SL, but I’m not playing S2 of Midnight. It’s just really bland and repetitive (even more so than usual).
