The Legend of Zelda has no mainline misses. Not every game may be beloved by everyone. I for one am not a fan of the Wilds games, and I know there was some issues between the fanbase and Skyward Sword before its remaster, but every mainline game has been extremely successful and very well made.

Zelda 2 the adventures of link?

u/Jumpy-Head-9319 Aug 29 '26

I think Zelda 2 is a fine game. Not for everyone, but I don’t buy the slander that it sucks because “too old, too hard, not like other Zeldas, etc.”

34

u/Mr_Cerealistic Aug 29 '26

Zelda 2 is dark souls before dark souls lol

u/Kyra_Hazweyrs Aug 30 '26

Locking on to a single target in third person so you automatically face them as you move around is an OoT original. Dark Souls ripped the combat from OoT and turned it up 1000 notches.

Every single 3rd person 3d action game is heavily inspired by OoT. It's the LotR of gaming, you can't escape it.

Halfway through elden ring I realized “This whole game is like fighting a Darknut on crack”

2

u/Blackpapalink Sep 01 '26

Triple Darknuts in TP be like: "Foul Tarnished"

u/AffectionateComplex9 Aug 30 '26

Laughs in Wizardry 4

1

u/Brillek Aug 31 '26

I think you underestimate how difficult most games were back then. They needed to pad out the playtime, or make you spend another dime, somehow.

1

u/Tenthul Sep 01 '26

And how long would the Souls games be if you could reasonably beat every boss on the first or second try? mmmm yes, padding....

1

u/Brillek Sep 01 '26

? I just meant to say Zelda 2s difficulty is not unique to the time. I wasn't talking about modern soulsgames.

Yeah, Zelda 2 gets shit for almost no legitimate reason. It's actually aged insanely well compared to most games from the NES era. Easily one of the best action games on the console. Hell, I think it holds up better than Zelda 1, but both were fundamental in shaping the series.

5

u/PassiveAgressiveFlop Aug 30 '26

I never got the hang of Zelda 2, but even I admit it was a good game and it does hold up well. Zelda 1 would probably hold up better if they didn't do the same formula, just better, with the A Link To The Past.

2

u/MechaMalz Aug 30 '26

As fun as Zelda 1 was back in the day I think it's an awful game to play today without a guide or childhood memories to guide you. In that way I think Zelda 2 might have aged better. Honestly with Zelda 2, if a game over just set you back to the start of the dungeon if you died in a dungeon, or the last town you visited if you died outside of a dungeon, it would be 1000x better and I'd have no major complaints.

2

u/Mythelm Sep 01 '26

Zelda 2 being trash has got to be one of the most larp takes in gaming

1

u/CoolKTiger Aug 30 '26

I too think zelda 2 is better. the more cryptic secrets are actually mentioned by ingame NPC's. Zelda 1 progression is like "yay you bombed the right rock out of 100, you may buy a potion now"

1

u/BrilliantEast Aug 31 '26

Yeah and all the rocks, bushes,… etc are the same 0 hints. Without a guide it’s just random trial and error.

1

u/rsir1823 Aug 29 '26

They did something different. Definitely time and place game

1

u/slickerdrips21 Aug 29 '26

If anything, it makes me want a metroidvania Zelda.

1

u/MechaMalz Aug 30 '26

Zelda 2 is the only Zelda game that I really want a remake of, because I think taking that gameplay style but modernizing it would get the most out of a remake. Where as the Oracles etc I don't really feel like 'need' a remake they still hold up imo.

1

u/GreenCollegeGardener Aug 30 '26

I played the hell out of when I was a kid and beat idk how many times

1

u/RockItGuyDC Aug 30 '26

I love Zelda 2.

They tried something different, and it wasn't for everyone, but it's legitimately a good game.

Faxanadu is probably the game Zelda 2 wanted to be, without the overworld map. Bothe games were deeper than people game them credit for.

1

u/hexregeneration Aug 30 '26

"Too hard" is a selling point for a lot of people.

1

u/MechaMalz Aug 30 '26

Honestly, have a game over start you back at the start of the palace you died in, or the last town you visited if you died outside of a palace, and suddenly the game becomes exponentially better.

1

u/BrilliantEast Aug 31 '26

The gameplay in itself is pretty good especially for when it came out there needs to be a port with difficulty settings (easy, normal, hard, original). Saying it’s not like other Zelda’s is ridiculous. The series always evolves and tries new things.

1

u/Hungry_Foot_2411 Sep 01 '26

Zelda 2 is pure cancer. It is easily one of the hardest games I've ever played and it simply isn't designed well. There is hard games then there are hard games that become impossible because the game doesn't work very well. That's zelda 2. Needing a walkthrough, super focus, and luck is just too much to beat a single game.

Zelda 2 has beaten TF out of me every time I go near it. It's a rabid animal clawing at my carpal tunnel at all times. Zelda is a game of it's time best case scenario.

1

u/Yum_Mario 1d ago

The problem with zelda 2 isn't that it's too hard, it's that it changed the gameplay to a different genre. And Nintendo themselves knew that because the next two games went back to the original's top down format and took out the experience system

-1

u/nimama3233 Aug 29 '26

I’ve finished every single mainline Zelda, most of them multiple times, outside of two.. skyward sword , and Zelda 2. Skyward Sword was more just a me thing, it was fine, but Zelda 2 is legit ass.

It's just Elden Ring tbh. No direction, vague half-quests and every where you go things are trying to kill you and doing a rather decent job at it.

1

u/minghj Aug 30 '26

Skyward Sword was annoying to play; too long and repetitive with the reused areas and bosses, but the story might be the best of the entire series. One of the few games that has made me tear up

3

u/Transpotato2002 Aug 30 '26

Ngl

I liked it more than the original Zelda, I'm sorry 😭

Not saying it's a fantastic game, but you gotta judge it based on what people had at the time. The original Zelda isn't exactly a masterpiece by modern standards, either, but back in the 80s, it was a revolution. Not saying Zelda 2 was as revolutionary, but we gotta consider the time it came out

1

u/Gupperz Aug 30 '26

yea i liked zelda 2 just fine. it's just obviously the black sheep of the zelda games. I thought it wasn't as successful but I looked it up and it seems that it was.

I have to disagree though, I think the orginal zelda is a masterpiece, modern standards be damned. THey had lots of limitations of the time and the hardware and they made use of it all to create one of the greatest games of all time.

1

u/FeistyTwist5427 Aug 30 '26

I actually loved Zelda 2 and disliked the original.

1

u/Isotomayor12 Aug 30 '26

It's different, not bad necessarily.

1

u/ArnUpNorth Aug 30 '26

One of my favorites because it’s so different.

1

u/Ezeviel Aug 31 '26

Zelda 2 is a great game... if you are a masochist

All in all it is weird and really out of pocket for a zelda game but at least they tried things I guess ?

1

u/ManBearWarPig Sep 01 '26

My favorite Zelda game

1

u/Blackpapalink Sep 01 '26

It's literally the grandfather of Metroidvanias.

1

u/Vanken64 Sep 03 '26

Zelda 2 is widely considered by critics today to be a good game that was judged too harshly at the time for being different.

1

u/MayaIngenue Aug 29 '26

Zelda 2 was my first Zelda game so it will always have a find place in my heart

0

u/joao7808 Aug 29 '26

Not a miss, just a different game tbh

0

u/DetectiveStock1340 Aug 29 '26

Adventure of Link is better than like half the games in the series

0

u/catchycactus Aug 30 '26

Zelda 2 is great

3

u/HurricaneHuracan Aug 30 '26

Happy cake day!

3

u/infinity_vamp Sep 01 '26

don't let skittybitty the worlds greatest tears of the kingdom hater hear that.

4

u/DadJunior Aug 29 '26

You mentioned SS and I agree. Only other one I'd really add is Zelda II

2

u/the_me_who_watches Aug 31 '26

True. A "bad" Zelda game is one that has an 80% score

2

u/SuicidalHoe Sep 02 '26

Skyward Sword is my favorite LoZ game and im so sad its not more loved by the fan base

1

u/EmKir Sep 02 '26

Don't worry, it's mine too. The story is the best in the series hands down.

1

u/mattjopete Sep 03 '26

There’s tens of us

1

u/mayssa09 Aug 30 '26

Was waiting for this answer ❤️

1

u/No_Blackberry1593 Sep 01 '26

I'd say TOTK was a massive miss, but that's just me

1

u/SubstantialRow3197 Sep 01 '26

Hate to say it but I've not heard anyone say anything positive about TotK

1

u/sweetestbb Sep 02 '26

Spirit tracks is straight up not fun in my opinion, in the she vein phantom hourglass is super underrated

1

u/Pernapple Sep 03 '26

Honestly even the spin offs are mostly praised. Maybe the DS titles fell off. But the Awakening, oracles, and minish cap have a pretty die hard fan base.

1

u/Helpful-Desk-8334 Aug 29 '26

The Philips CDI games were real real bad

1

u/pocket_arsenal Aug 30 '26

Skyward Sword and the DS games were ass. 2007-2011 as definitely a low point in the franchise imo.

2

u/Mission_Piccolo_2515 Aug 30 '26

Definitely the low point of the series (I'll even include TP and Between Worlds into the mix) but they're honestly not that bad in the grand scheme of things.

Even at it's most formulaic each game has at least a bunch of highlights one-off sequences (the bosses and minigames in particular are arguably the best they've ever been in the series) and they never feel like lazy iterative sequels either.

1

u/Zaotastic Aug 29 '26

The only big mainline Zelda game I think was a genuine miss was Phantom Hourglass, even the first time I played it I thought it was a weak entry, and even then its still a decent game on its own right. The rest of Zelda is just so good by comparison lol

1

u/Slammnardo Aug 30 '26

I liked hourglass but I found Spirit tracks too much with the train shit

1

u/Zaotastic Aug 30 '26

My issue with Phantom Hourglass is that it felt more like a DS tech demo extended into a Zelda game like Spirit Tracks felt like it was designed as a Zelda game first lol

1

u/Bokki_64 Aug 30 '26

I remember it had surprisingly fun (if not forgettable) dungeons. I still preferred Phantom hourglass, but I was one of those weird kids who actually really liked it.

1

u/DMifune Aug 30 '26

Phantom Hourglass was not good.

0

u/iainB85 Aug 30 '26

Skyward Sword on the Wii was barely playable garbage. Other than that I’ll give it to you.

1

u/Pretend_Purchase_893 Aug 30 '26

The remake doesn't really help it much either. It's a dead boring zelda title.

-1

u/ledzppln6 Aug 30 '26

The biggest miss for me with the BOTW series was the weapon durability. I know plenty of people love it, but I just hate it. Everything else is about is great though.

-1

u/Formal-Opening2167 Aug 30 '26

Tears of the kingdom was garbage

1

u/flintybackpack Aug 30 '26

No. Just no.

-11

u/Amferam Aug 29 '26

Zelda was about to fail until Twilight Princess saved it. If TP flopped the series would have probably died.

9

u/mccannrs Aug 30 '26 edited Aug 30 '26

Where the hell did you come up with this? The Wind Waker sold millions of copies on the GameCube, not to mention all the other releases we got between WW and TP: Four Swords/ALttP, Four Swords Adventures, The Minish Cap.

These were some of the most prolific and successful years for Zelda, there was absolutely no chance of the series dying 😂
