Discussion / Question Anybody want to make an indie video game company?

So... My spouse was at a AAA game studio up until about a week ago... 😒 Take a guess which one. 😅 Would anyone here want to start up an indie game studio and make fun awesome games that they and other people actually would enjoy playing...?

So what you're really saying is you're looking for venture capital?!

Lol I mean... That would have to also be a thing if we got the right people together.. but you would need the right people first.

Looks like their future is bright for you guys. Looking for random people on Reddit to start a company. A really sound plan.

Last year's game of the year winner started out the exact same way. Random reddit posts about an idea. It's not unheard of.

To be fair the hollow knight devs friend made a Reddit post about their new up and coming game and everyone shit on that

9

u/Lopspo Jul 06 '26

They had a game, at least, and an idea beyond “fun awesome”

Very real and true

u/Lopspo Jul 06 '26

I mean shit if they make the next Hollow Knight put me in the screencap and make fun of me, I’m all for it lol

Yes! Do that too please

And if we get a group together and it works out, we shall. Remind me how we should refer to you...?

The Odious Doubter

🫡 Shall do! 😂

My apologies for not being a wordsmith in the moment. I had our 15 month old crawling all over me. 👍

u/PetrichorMoodFluid Jul 06 '26

Look man... if you don't want to be a part of the idea, you don't have to respond. Simple as that.

Jeez you are such a jackass 😭 Reddit can be used for more than watching ur hentai pal. God forbid someone tries to spark something creative on a platform that can reach millions of people simultaneously.

Such a bozo go hate on stuff that deserves it🤣

If she was really in the video game industry she would know how difficult it is to secure funding. Also, how incredibly difficult it is for an indie company to make a game that see’s great success. I hope your spouse can bounce back in the industry. I know a lot of industry vets still looking for jobs after being laid off for longer than a year.

u/PetrichorMoodFluid Jul 06 '26

That's what has me worried but I also know we're not the only ones out here looking for jobs... which is why I was looking to try and see if anyone else has considered trying to start up a new indoor company and get away from the corporate elites.

I’ve seen too many folks try this and eventually shut down after burning their savings. It is just too hard to get investment or secure a publisher.

1

u/PetrichorMoodFluid Jul 09 '26

There are publishers out there that, if you have a grea idea and can make it will help though... and if that's something we managed (especially now that nearly 5k people have been let go from Xbox as of this week...) then I'd love to at least try.

I'm guessing Bungie? If they're looking for someone to help with feedback and advertising, I'm interested. Also in Washington if they are.

2

u/SUPER-P00PER Jul 06 '26

I’m an artist (can do concept art) and musician (can make the OST) and can also do voice acting

2

u/JasonMyersZ Jul 06 '26

I'm in. What do you need?

1

u/PetrichorMoodFluid Jul 09 '26

What're you good at and/or enjoy as far as the making games process?

2

u/HighwayEmergency9707 Jul 06 '26

I had an idea for a game come to me in a dream. If you guys can make it a reality I’m sure it can be a moderate success.

1

u/PetrichorMoodFluid Jul 09 '26

I'm intrigued! My husband has some ideas to. Would you want to all get together with those on here who have responded yes as well?

2

u/Swag_Genie Jul 06 '26

I'm willing to provide VO for anything you want to do and genuine project input (got a couple nifty ideas) without any compensation unless we make money.

1

u/PetrichorMoodFluid Jul 09 '26

Yeah... it might be tough at the beginning. Might have to be a volunteer side job until we could get enough traction.

1

u/Swag_Genie Jul 13 '26

I'm fine with that so long as it's a cool project :)

2

u/Dep-turn Jul 09 '26

I'm sharing this post with my daughter who is a solo dev!

2

u/New-Two-1349 Jul 06 '26

Lemme guess: Sony?

1

u/ObeseBumblebee Jul 06 '26

Sent you a DM

1

u/Cosmosis42 Jul 06 '26

lmao I'd love to volunteer some of my free time to help out but can't quit my job or anything

Serious though, I'm a software developer with 8 years of experience. I can dedicate a few hours a week at the moment, maybe a little more in the Winter. My DM's are open

1

u/PetrichorMoodFluid Jul 09 '26

Valid. Not quitting your job is the right way to go until we gain traction as it would be a volunteer side job until then... but there's enough video game and tech people out there that if we all have the passion and the right game, we could put something amazing out into the worldwide no corporate overhead!

2

u/Cosmosis42 Jul 10 '26

Hell yeah! I'm also lucky enough to be allowed to work on games outside of work as I'm in a different area of software. So if you do think it'd be beneficial, totally hit me up

I will keep everyone on here in mind if my spouse and/or any of his friends get anything going!!!

1

u/Professional-Pie5629 Jul 07 '26

I think this is a very hard way to find partners. You either has to know the people before, or either you or the group you want to join have concrete ideas or better yet something already done. Its hard enough to figure out if your work moral match and the others are serious enough

1

u/PetrichorMoodFluid Jul 09 '26

Surprise... My husband worked his prior job for 11 years and has been in the games industry a few years more than that. Thousands (nearly 5k) just got let go from Xbox on Monday so... I'm sure if we want to find like minded, hard working, and creative people, we will eventually find them.

Worauf wartest du? Fang selbst an - Es war niemals einfacher als jetzt

1

u/PetrichorMoodFluid Jul 09 '26

That's what we're trying to do here. Apologies it doesn't translate to German well it seems. We're asking if anyone on here wants to be a part of this potential idea.

1

u/Organic_Manner6847 Jul 11 '26

Yes, of course, my uncle at Nintendo also started his own company by asking random people on the Internet.

Game and system designer here, building a arpg inspired by LitRPGs and certain isekais.

u/Sea_Conversation7601 Jul 12 '26

I enjoying doing QA as a side hustle, because I’m medically retired and couldn’t find a part-time job that was part-time enough, I could give you 5-10 hours a week when you need it, and not every week.

I hope you guys bounce back. Independent is certainly the way to go in this industry currently. Steer clear of mega corporations.

1

u/PorkRinds416 Jul 06 '26

No no and no... Companies nowadays are failing b/c their time management skills are horrible and what used to take someone an afternoon to code something or fix something now has a "two week plan". Thus resulting in millions spent on lazy developers. Also the chances to make the next Megabonk or Schedule 1 are slim to none. For every one that succeeds, 500 must fail.

1

u/PetrichorMoodFluid Jul 11 '26

I feel like with the amount of amazing talent that's just been royally shat on, even just in the last couple of weeks, that we have enough people somewhere or there that are tired of corporations fucking everything up and ruining creativity in the games industry that... I feel like the odds are in our favor at this point. And we'd be unionized and independent. Sooooo... All one can do is at least try and see what comes of it.

I have no skills in gaming but I have ideas and would love to be part of a team.

1

u/PetrichorMoodFluid Jul 06 '26

Don't have to have all skills to make a game. Ideas are a huge part of it!!!

2

u/blkglfnks Jul 06 '26

Well! If this is a genuine offer, I’d love to join the team!

1

u/PetrichorMoodFluid Jul 09 '26

I will add you to the yes list if we get enough people to get this up and going!!!

only if we make ww2 fps games like medal of honor. lone wolf single player like ps1 games "medal of honor" and "underground" and the ps2 medal of honor "front line".

i would be open mined to other lone wolf fps games down the road. i could be open to a few lone wolf 3rd person shooters but thats about it.

company name: lone wolf

2

u/ebk_errday Jul 06 '26

That's a business plan right there

3

u/brzilla1968 Jul 06 '26

Lmao any ww2 shooter is guaranteed flop, this isn’t 2000 anymore
