Discussion I put the railways and metros of China, Japan, Korea and the UK on one satellite globe, and you can zoom in to the tracks

Thumbnail gallery
290 Upvotes

This sub is mostly about schematic diagrams, so this is the opposite approach: nothing is straightened or simplified, every line follows the real alignment.

I wanted one map where I could see how high-speed lines, ordinary railways, suburban services and metros actually fit together. Most maps are schematic and cover one system at a time, so I built this: https://rail-globe.github.io

What it does:

- Draws about 214,000 km of railway in four countries (China 165,000 km, Japan 26,000, the UK 18,000, South Korea 4,700) plus the metro, light rail and tram lines of about 90 cities, over satellite imagery on a globe.

- Lines sit on the real tracks. Zoom in on a big station and you can count the platform tracks and see the depots.

- High-speed lines are coloured by design speed, in the same seven bands everywhere (China's HSR, Shinkansen, Korea's KTX lines, HS1). Metros and many other lines use their official line colours.

- Click a line to highlight it end to end. For China you can pick two stations and get a route over the actual rail and metro network.

- Search for a station, line or city in Chinese, English, Japanese or Korean. There is a Chinese / English switch.

It is a one-person project and certainly has mistakes: missing links, lines in the wrong class, design speeds I could not source. If you spot something wrong where you live, I would like to hear it. Which country should be next?

Discussion What is the worst light rail system in the US?

Been talking about the modern history of light rail in the US with a firend. The US went through a light rail boom from the 80s to the early 2000s in many small cities. Many systems were built in low density areas that see very low ridership. With enough time for infill development to happen (or not), which ones have fared the worst? And why do you think that is?

Discussion Simutrans Extended is the Best Overall Transit Simulator Game Available

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

I should start by stating that these are all my own opinions and I'm not saying the other games I will compare it to are bad games. I just think that simutrans Extended is OVERALL the best transit simulator.

I know this might be a controversial statement but I believe that Simutrans Extended is the ultimate transit simulator game and I believe I have the facts to prove it. These points are in no particular or and I will compare SE (simutrans Extended) to several other transit games. Mostly I will compare it to openttd and transit fever as I feel these are the most similar.

I am not interested in subway builder as those games do not allow you to build roads and buildings and somewhat interact with the urban environment.

The above screenshots are from my latest long game. I will provide the save file in the comments if anyone wants to download it and see the insane scale of the game for themselves.

  1. It is the most realistic transit simulator. Simutrans Extended allows you to create vast and complex transit systems. The last 2 photos you can see the size of my network.

This alone is what makes it better than the transport fever games. These games do a very good job of simulating an environment and economy but they are capped by their 3D graphics and you would need a powerful desktop to make a network the size of even Cleveland.

Simutrans Extended, like openttd uses 2D graphics and allows you to create huge networks on even moderate hardware.

  1. It's transit simulation is the best. What sets it apart from Openttd which is a very similar game. SE has a much more complex passenger generation and destination algorithm.

-passengers are more likely to use your transit if it is 1. Fast, 2. Close to their homes where they generate, 3 frequent.

  1. There are two types of passengers. Visitors and Job commuters.

Visitors will take longer trips less frequently and will walk longer and wait longer for transit service.

Job Commuters will use the transit more frequently but travel a shorter distance if it is frequent, and close to their origin (homes)

  1. SE allows you to build very complex rail layouts using tunnels and viaducts, all of which can be built and entered diagonally.

  2. Build stations underground or on viaducts. (4 and 5 are the main reasons I learned to play SE after starting off with openttd) Underground stations and diagonal tracks allow you to create realistic metro networks.

  3. Simutrans auto generates cool network maps for you (seen in last few images)

  4. Economy and demand change over time.

-1700s demand is low and people mostly travel shorter distances due to long travel times.

-1840 and onward, rail travel is adopted and people will travel farther, faster and more often as the technology develops over the coming years.

-1940 and onward. Private cars are adopted and you will have to compete with roads for passengers. If your network is fast and efficient you can survive

-1980s, faster and faster trains are being developed. The fastest being the 350 kph HSR and even 500 kph maglevs for late game.

A little more info on the game.

I am referring to SPECIFICALLY SIMUTRANS EXTENDED. It is an offshoot of normal simutrans. Most of the features I pointed out are unique to simutrans extended.

Simutrans extended does not have grfs like openttd so it is not very customizable. The base version of SE has 2 "paks" Britain and Sweden.

Britain is by far the most complete and it's a great way to learn about railroad history as all the vehicles are real and are released in the game in their approximate real life years.

Anyways I know this was a bit rambly and maybe not formatted well but as a transit lover I highly recommend this game to you!

Feel free to ask me any questions about it!

Discussion I got jumpscared. TIL that Solaris is making buses for the US market.

As a Pole, it is always exciting to see our companies expand (I know they're owned by a CAF but still). It looks kind of cursed tho.

What do people from North America think about this? I've heard the situation is pretty dire with just 2 manufacturers, so if Solaris can make more "european" buses it might be successful.

Photos / Videos What I learned building a live map of Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian trains with open data

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built Spår, an Apple TV app showing Nordic trains moving in real time, with colours indicating delays. All the train data comes from open APIs:

- Sweden: Trafikverket (CC0), for positions and delays

- Finland: Fintraffic / digitraffic.fi (CC BY 4.0), including freight trains

- Norway: Entur (NLOD)

The differences between the feeds were interesting. Finland’s was the most complete, including freight, and didn’t need an API key. Sweden requires a free key, but has great delay data. In Norway, some operators always report a delay of zero. I show those as “no data” because I don’t want to label a train as on time when the feed doesn’t actually tell me that.

The app is meant to be left running on the TV. You can watch the network change through the day without doing much beyond looking at it.

GoCary is one of the North Carolina research triangles smaller transit agencys for the sprawly town of, you guessed it, Cary. Not that this service is pefect in any way, but it's a start.

Just annoyed they've bought cutaway buses and not actual full sized 29ft/35ft buses, even though thats what they started out with.

All of this is just photos I've accumulated from my various transit foaming sessions.

Questions How do you kill time riding transit?

Doing a design project on how people spend their time on public transit. I’d really appreciate your answers and feedback. Thanks!

1. How old are you, and what time of day do you typically commute?

2. What do you usually do while waiting for or riding transit?
(Scrolling social media, listening to music, reading, gaming, sleeping, looking out the window, etc.)

3. If your answer to #2 was Smartphone related, have you ever read books, newspapers, or done puzzles during a commute? If so, why did you stop?

4. Would you use a free machine at a transit station that prints small sheets of short stories or newspaper-style puzzles to take on your ride? For example, Sudoku, word searches, or Where’s Waldo-style puzzles. What would make you more or less likely to use it?

A GitHub project for railways (including metros/subways and trams) in China, Japan, South Korea and the UK depicted on the satellite images of the Earth.

HSLs are classified according to their designed speeds, while the rest of the railways are colored with the official line color if available, or a neutral light color if not. Metro/subway lines, light rail and tram lines are colored with the colors of the lines instead of those of the companies.

The satellite images are from Esri World Imagery and the route data is from contributors of OpenStreetMap.

Discussion I built a Flightradar-style map for the Paris metro

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all,

I've wondered for a while whether there was a simple way to see where Paris metro and RER trains are across the network, a bit like Flightradar for planes.

I couldn't really find what I had in mind so I started building it myself.

Lineapolis offers an interactive map of the Paris transit network with animated train positions, traffic information and replay. I'd like to extend it to New-York and London.

The train positions are estimated using real-time arrival predictions from public API so it's not GPS tracking. That said, I've tested it on the ground and the results seem pretty convincing! I also find the network view fascinating to watch.

Lineapolis — The Metro and RER in motion

Would love any feedback, especially on the visual experience and what you think could make it more compelling.
