THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS New Rule: Moratorium on Hasan Piker and Destiny Discussions

Effective immediately, r/thebulwark is imposing a complete moratorium on posts and comments about Hasan Piker and Destiny.

This isn't a decision we're making because of any particular position either individual holds, nor is it an attempt to dictate who members of this community should or shouldn't listen to. It's a moderation decision based on what repeatedly happens whenever either of these names enters a discussion here.

The conversation almost immediately devolves.

Threads become hostile, arguments spill into unrelated discussions, and the focus quickly shifts away from The Bulwark and the issues this community exists to discuss. We've tried allowing these conversations to play out, but at this point the pattern is clear enough that continuing to do so isn't productive.

We also recognize that The Bulwark and its hosts may interview Hasan Piker or Destiny, appear with them, respond to them, or discuss them and their audiences. That does not change this rule. Even when one of them comes up directly in Bulwark content, discussion specifically centered on Hasan or Destiny will not be permitted here.

There are simply far bigger and more consequential issues for this community to spend its time discussing, and we're not interested in repeatedly allowing the subreddit to be consumed by the same fights.

Going forward:

  • Posts primarily about Hasan Piker or Destiny will be removed.
  • Comments that introduce or redirect discussion toward either individual will be removed.
  • This applies to positive, negative, and neutral discussion alike.
  • Attempts to circumvent the rule through nicknames, abbreviations, screenshots, or obvious indirect references will be treated the same way.
  • Repeated attempts to ignore the moratorium may result in additional moderation action.

This isn't about declaring one "side" right and the other wrong. We're taking the argument itself off the table.

We understand that some members won't agree with this decision. That's fine. But our responsibility as moderators is to keep this subreddit focused and capable of sustaining productive conversation. Based on what we've seen, discussions about these two individuals consistently work against that goal.

For now, take those conversations elsewhere.

Addendum / Clarification

I want to clarify something that came up in the comments regarding retroactive enforcement of this moratorium.

In responding to questions, I initially stated that the rule would apply retroactively. After considering the implications of that more carefully, I don't think that would be fair or appropriate. We will not be applying this rule retroactively.

The moratorium and its enforcement begin from the time this post was published and apply going forward. Posts and comments made before the moratorium went into effect will not be removed simply for violating a rule that did not yet exist.

I also want to emphasize that this is a moratorium, not necessarily a permanent rule. The purpose is to give the community a break from a subject that has repeatedly resulted in hostile and unproductive discussions. We can revisit the moratorium in the future and determine whether it remains necessary.

I appreciate those who raised concerns about the retroactive application. I hadn't fully thought through that aspect when I initially answered the question, and after considering the criticism, I think changing course here is the right call.

Things I am 100% certain of. . .

  1. Trump will aggressively pursue interference in the conduction and results of the elections.

  2. His administration will be ALL IN in perpetuating whatever lies come up - no resignations.

  3. He will have assistance all the way down including at the state and country levels.

  4. Not a single goddam elected republican will do a thing to stop him.

  5. The democrats haven't demonstrate yet that they have the balls for this kind of fight.

Maybe I'm wrong, I hope I'm wrong, but nothing I've seen in the last 10 years tells me that I'm wrong.

Also, regardless of what happens to the senate Alito's replacement will be confirmed in the lame-duck session and no one will stop them.

I don't think this country is anywhere close to prepared for the despair that is about to set in.

P.S. For Mods/Com, does this also fall under "Good Trouble" or other flairs too?

Not only did the lamest of October surprises blow up in the faces of Ken Paxton and the rightwing loons desperate to get Talarico on something, Greg Abbott is now in a tight race with his Democratic challenger, Gina Hinojosa. And all the money pouring in to prop up Paxton could be better spent on Senate races in Alaska and Kansas. This would be a great time for the Democratic Governors Association to steer (a lot) more funding Hinojosa's way.

Plus: Bill and Tim share their long shots, POTUS can't quit showing how much he's in the tank for Putin, MBS is finding out the hard way how the Trump family treats their business partners, don't be distracted by DHS's clownish authoritarianism in raiding Ilhan Omar's home, and the Iranian family that Tim has been advocating for is still in the Dilley detention center.

The Bulwark Takes Adrian Carrasquillo on the raid of Rep. Ilhan Omar's home. Whenever I see an Adrian video, I think "man I wish there were more Adrian videos." I know not every Bulwark newsletter writer gets their own show, but Huddled Masses would be a good (and important) one.

Per Fox news (didn't want to give them traffic by sharing but they got this extra bit of info):

"Two sources close to the investigation say the search stems from a criminal fraud investigation into the Somali-born congresswoman's immigration paperwork, which was filled out by her late father when she was a child."

"According to Sortor’s account, Talarico was released from the Ohio hospital either on Friday night, Oct. 9, or Saturday night, Oct. 10. However, Talarico was seen publicly at a recording of Austin City Limits on Friday night and then made appearances in Austin Saturday morning before going to a Kacey Musgraves concert in Dallas Saturday evening."

Buttigieg gambles on a different path for 2028

Thumbnail
axios.com
37 Upvotes

In early 2025, Democratic lawmakers and strategists including New York Sen. Chuck Schumer and former Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow urged Buttigieg — who had moved to Michigan — to run for office in his new state.

Buttigieg passed, citing both a desire to stay home more with his husband and young twins, and figuring that he could still get his message out without being in the Senate.

That decision is a gamble for Buttigieg's presidential ambitions. He's been able to build a national network over the last two years but hasn't added to his relatively thin resume as a former mayor of South Bend, Ind., and Joe Biden's transportation secretary.

Buttigieg has traveled to 37 states since he left the Biden administration, Politico reported last week. Democratic candidates in vital swing districts and states have welcomed him to campaign for them this year while resisting offers from other potential presidential candidates such as former Vice President Kamala Harris, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

In Buttigieg, many Democrats see a surrogate who can draw attention and crowds without the degree of negative attention that other prominent Democrats attract.

Buttigieg, 44, became a national political figure without following the typical path. He's betting that the traditional ladder of running for president — becoming a senator, governor, or vice president first — no longer applies, especially after the Trump era.

Fluff Does everyone see my state/city as a joke?

There's been a bit of news and political dialogue having to do with my home state/city of Portland, Oregon. Between the Collins campaign screw up and the comments made by Tim today on the Oregon governor's race on today's pod, it's raised some questions for me about how people outside of the PNW view Portland and the broader state of Oregon? Does everyone see us as a joke in the same way as everyone treated New Jersey in the 90s? I know that the right has a mental image of Portland due to Agent Orange's comments about us and our general nauseatingly liberal bent (an insult that has been personally used against me before) but are we seen as an unserious place on the national stage? What do people think when they think of Portland, and the State of Oregon? I know we have a reputation, but I'm curious if our national image is worse than I thought it was. I get what Tim meant on the pod today, but his words seemed a bit more harsh than I was expecting and I'm wondering if I'm just in my own head or if there is something else happening here.

Edit: thank you for everyone's candor on the matter, while it might not be exactly what I wanted to hear I do appreciate the truth. Like most young men in Portland, I've had a girl dump me here, leave this city, and then shit on it mercilessly online. I always thought that was just noise but it seems like there is more to it than my own biases, whether it's coming from The Bulwark itself or just it's fans. On the bright side, I now know not to hold my breath for a Bulwark live show ever happening here.

Why don't journalists "play dumb" to get the facts from the Trump administration?

Why do journalists argue instead of using previous statements to expose lies? With the Iran war as an example, why are nuclear weapons treated as an acceptable explanation? Their nuclear program was completely destroyed, how can their nuclear program be completely destroyed and the reason we are fighting them? Why do we need aircraft carriers there if their air force and navy have been completely destroyed?

Why don't journalists press on their logic?
