It is either a lie, or testing was very sub par.

Sounds like it's that it works.

OP said it posts. Not like there are transistors anywhere near the damage. the pads also must still be intact enough to work, or the damaged pads may be redundant/unused. There are a decent number of redundant or unused pads

Or additional io or memory bus, i'd wouch that it isn't a new, it might be a feature that isn't in use or haven't yet be found. It is a scope of testing. works in this setup vs works 100%

At least 2 of the dimm slots are still good, but I'm going to try to return it or get a heavy partial refund anyways

If that's actually an LGA1151 CPU, it's a clock enable pin on the second DDR bus so it will work fine with channel A slots but may not with channel B. But who knows, maybe all of the connections are still intact, getting it to POST with channel B populated should reveal the condition.

Also if it would break after few heat cycles

u/wanderingwolfe 18d ago

CPU tested and working 100% at 30% capacity.

Working as paper weight

Me licking it, place it on top of a cherry pie, then hitting it with a hammer - "yup, passed the random test"

I uh... I don't have a lot of confidence in that assessment.

I can't vouch for the seller's "100%" claim, but I can tell you that it does still post into bios :)
Somehow

Incredible. Benchmark and stress test when you have time, please? I would love to know if it's long-term feasible or if any losses happen due to pad damage.

I would love to keep it for tests but at the moment I'm afraid to touch it any more than I already have, it might affect my ability to return it. I can tell you two of the 4 dimm slots are still good.
It's not only the one pad that's damaged. The cluster of very fine traces on the top of the substrate that go over that bulge are flexed to the fringe of breaking, assuming they haven't already broken, and I would be surprised if the delamination hasn't ripped apart any internal vias. If I can, I will request a partial refund instead and keep this one!

Thermal cycle until death!! Oh well

Honestly not that surprising to me. are the pads just dirty or actually scratched up? either way apparently they are making good enough contact. The. the damage on the edge is pretty far from any transistors, it's just wires to the pads that far out I imagine, similarly on the edge there were you can see layers separating there probably isn't anything going on, and the damage isn't deap enough to matter.

I bet it would run a very surprisingly normal life. Maybe won't love heat cycles or heavy vibration. but that far from the actual chip isn't really going to get very extreme heat cycles if the chip is cooled properly. Vibration maybe, but if it's a desktop that also wouldn't be a big deal.

I'm less worried about the one half-gone pad, and more worried about the delamination at the edge affecting the nearby pads, internal vias and traces. On the top of the substrate, there is a cluster of no less than 6 tiny traces running along that edge, and they look very stretched at the location of the bulge. The silicon is 99.99% fine, but many of those pins still require a reliable connection to the motherboard

Time for some MemTest86+ for a few days.

Damage like that has a chance of not affecting the processor at all. It all depends on what that pad is (and the surrounding ones could be shot)

Remember the die itself is very small.

Get yourself a pinout diagram of it and check what the pad is for, if it's nothing and the CPU functions then I dunno ask the seller for a heavy discount and just send it.

Edit: Assuming that is an i7 6700K here you go.

It was tested but then was moved with a screwdriver

3

u/Canonip 18d ago

Was it shipped in an envelope without protection?

8

u/MJY_0014 18d ago

In a CPU clamshell and padded envelope. I believe the damage existed before it was mailed

3

u/Neither-Nebula5000 18d ago

Yeah, but working as what exactly?

3

u/MJY_0014 18d ago

Can confirm. Works as a shot glass coaster

3

u/Icy-Prize-885 18d ago

Does the thing work tho?

1

u/MJY_0014 18d ago

Posts into bios :)

3

u/DrCoolGuy 18d ago

Obviously you did this when removing it 😇 /s

2

u/Vexcenot 18d ago

well does it work?

3

u/MJY_0014 18d ago

It indeed posts and boots into bios, but that's all I can say about it right now

2

u/Year3030 18d ago

A lot of the pins are used for ground so it might actually be ok. However... yes they should have listed it with pics of the damage.

3

u/Trivo3 17d ago

Did it pass the taste test?

2

u/MJY_0014 17d ago

A little more tangy than a new 9800x3d

1

u/zeed88 18d ago

I would return it regardless, did you buy it knowingly or found out after? If the latter then return it

2

u/MJY_0014 18d ago

The seller did not disclose the damage and it was nowhere visible in the single dark pixelated photo of the top side the seller provided.

1

u/Vanbursta1 18d ago

Well, to be fair, that was probably true at some point.

2

u/BioQuantumComputer 18d ago

This but a Flesh wound

1

u/floswamp 18d ago

Was it the cat that ”tested” it?

1

u/DeeZett 18d ago

The pins/pin pads on a CPU are redundant.

1

u/heidnseak 18d ago

Doubt.

1

u/Vectan 18d ago

Crash tested.

1

u/realNtoxic 18d ago

Tested before hitting with a hammer 🔨

1

u/zman0900 18d ago

"worked when parked"

1

u/Jayden_Ha 18d ago

Does it boot? Some pins doesn’t matter and redundant

1

u/MJY_0014 17d ago

It does post and go into bios, at least one of the memory channels is functional, but that's all the testing I have done right now. I'll be returning the chip

1

u/Jayden_Ha 17d ago

You don’t need to

3

u/MJY_0014 17d ago

It's my choice. I understand you may be rolling your eyes. But while you are sitting there complaining about me complaining, I am not complaining for the sake of complaining. I have reasons to not trust a cracked CPU with critical work. The delamination could have caused more internal damage than just that one half missing pad. I can already tell from closer inspection that a cluster of 6 microscopic traces on the topside of the substrate going over the bump is very stretched, cracked, and likely electrically compromised. Additionally there could be internal vias connecting the many substrate layers that are torn from that delamination. And just because it "works" doesn't mean it's stable, or it will be reliable long term. It could have an unstable memory channel, it could work for a week, or it could work forever. But I have no reason to take that risk find out what will happen, when I can return the chip and buy another :)

1

u/Jayden_Ha 17d ago

You have no reasons to not trust a modern cpu doesn’t have the capability to function without a single redundant pin

3

u/MJY_0014 17d ago

Read my reply carefully. I'm worried that the damage extends beyond a single pin. I'm worried about the 5 pins surrounding it, as well as 6 traces on the deformed surface layer. You don't know what the delamination broke inside. Since this is meant to be a test CPU, it will see a lot of installation, removal, heating, and cooling cycles, all of which may further extend the crack. For the amount I paid for it, I'd rather have a chip I can trust. Return shipping is free

1

u/iliketurtles50000 15d ago

It's neither modern, nor is it a single pin. The layers of the PCB look like they're separating.

0

u/Jayden_Ha 17d ago

And returning is just wasting more time

0

u/Jayden_Ha 17d ago

And don’t forget you have to pay for shipping

1

u/Jayden_Ha 17d ago

Anyways, cute husky if that’s your sona

1

u/MJY_0014 17d ago

Wolf, but thank you :3

2

u/mhdgraphics 16d ago

Was gonna say "Dog ate your CPU again?" but will have to change it to wolf...

1

u/Accomplished_Emu_658 16d ago

I tested it with a hammer before i sent it to you

1

u/ZirePhiinix 12d ago

It was working until they pulled it out...

0

u/Artin-X86 18d ago

you're lying bro

-1

u/Jayden_Ha 18d ago

I will never understand people complain for the sake of complaining

1

u/MJY_0014 17d ago

Am I wrong for not wanting to keep a sensitive computer component with undisclosed damage that may have unpredictable effects on its operation?
