Transportation Gas vehicles fall under 50% of global new-auto sales for first time

The trend remains good but this is not correct. Hybrids are gas cars. The pure EV share is 17%.

Yeah. My daughter has a Ford fusion hybrid. My wife had a foe escape gas. The gas mileage difference 30/35

You're right, but there is some nuance.
Here in Australia we're getting PHEVs that have 120+km of electric only range, so in many cases they're use case is pure electric, with maybe one or two tanks of petrol put through them a year.

That is the argument. How often it actually matches reality is the question. What percentage of hybrids are plug-in hybrids, what percentage of those owners actually plug it in?

All of which I agree with, but I have to point out that both of those articles are testing plain HEVs, not PHEVs.
If I could afford one, I know that I would deliberately have to put a tank of petrol through it every six months because I would be concerned about the fuel going off. Otherwise the ICE would never turn on, because I can charge it directly from my solar during the day every single day, and 100km of electric range is about double my actual needs.

The fact that the "article" is little more than a headline and a stock photo I would say the dodgy way the headline is written means while gas has declined things like diesel and hybrids probably increased more so than EVs are filling in the void.

People can't afford high gas prices anymore.
Shame on all people who voted for Trump and will vote again for GOP this election.

He intentionally increased gas prices, while reducing the MPG standards for US car sales. I am not sure how his voters can assume that is in their favor, but they seem to. Funny that he is unintentionally causing more people to buy electric cars worldwide

Trump has done more to accelerate the transition to EVs than any president.
If gas goes to $7 he might end up accidentally fixing climate change for future generations which would be the most hilarious thing to happen in history of the human race.

The cars consumers drive is such a small portion of the overall air pollution.
All his antics will do is destroy the American economy and push American families into financial ruin. But his buddies will get even richer, so the jokes on us.

What are you smoking? According to data from Motor Intelligence, U.S. EV sales dropped 30.7% in the first nine months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.

In part because combustion engines are cheaper especially since EV rebates expired.

Trump is the person responsible for the throttling of oil flow from the Middle East. Therefore HE is the one who drove up the prices.

My car broke down several months back. I opted to get a motorcycle instead of another car. I understand not everyone can make that trade, but getting 50+ miles a gallon has been nice with these prices.

This is global. A much larger market than the US.

u/endgeenear 12h ago
I dont live in the US and the prices are record high cause of that fucking orange criminal.

Sure but the article is about gas vehicles being below 50%. It’s not dumb Americans helping this new purchasing trend.

This global issue being caused by any particular nation?
One at war with Iran perhaps?

Just dont buy tesla. Pretty much playing into their plan if you do.

u/Sargelion 7h ago
Then you buy from a traditional dealership and play into an even more annoying plan. Not saying you are wrong, it's just frustrating.

Other alternative is the used market for either EVs, hybrids, or older gas cars. Though I'm sure the fluctuation has been wild there too.

Please don’t buy bmw either. Don’t encourage their current designer to do anything but apply for garbage dump landscaping positions.

American manufacturers, who also massively supported Trump, have scrapped a few EV models and decided to "bring back" gas guzzling cars. E.g.: Ram 1500 with an HEMI V-8 and Ram Rumble Bee, a "muscle" pickup truck. These trucks are certainly quite cool, but not very practical for daily use, nor good for the environment and your wallet.
Unfortunately for them, bankruptcy expert Trump has made sure that gasoline and diesel are now unaffordable.

I’m in Canada but around my neighborhood i have started seeing for sale signs on a bunch of bigger trucks mainly 250/2500 series.

u/Clear-Staff4699 6h ago
The amount of gas guzzling trucks I see on the road is pure insanity. And yes, empty beds too. Can only imagine how painful it is to fill up these days too.

My favorite is the winter when they become hazards on icy roads because they lack self awareness

From the article:
- Gas-only: 20.25M
- EV: 6.87M
- Hybrid: 7.27M
Which gives:
- Gas-only: 59%
- EV: 17%
- Hybrid: 17%
But they report:
- Gas-only: 49%
- EV: 17%
- Hybrid: 18%

Good for the environment.
