Article Starbucks is being sued over “sugar-free” protein drinks that allegedly have 13-21g of sugar per venti
A proposed class action filed October 2 in federal court in Seattle (Walsh v. Starbucks) alleges eight Starbucks "Sugar-Free" protein drinks, vanilla and caramel lattes and matchas in hot and iced, contain 13 to 21 grams of sugar per venti. All of it from lactose, the sugar naturally in milk.
The complaint points to the FDA rule that "sugar-free" generally means under 0.5g of sugar per serving. The venti caramel protein matcha is alleged at 21 grams. That is 42 times the legal line.
Here is the twist: Starbucks disputes the claims and says the sugar numbers were printed on its nutrition panels the whole time, which is true. So this lawsuit is not about hidden data. It is about whether the name on the cup misleads even when the panel tells the truth.
So my question is: if the panel listed the sugar all along, is "sugar-free" in the name still misleading? Or do most people reasonably read it as "no added sugar"?
