lmao this brings back memories of my early 20s...
I used to smoke and mom hated it. I read "The Singularity Is Near" in high school and since then I was obsessed with AI and technology. I used to tell my mom "by the time cancer is a problem for my generation, medical science and technology will be advanced enough to cure it" and she'd respond "I don't give a shit about your technology!!".
The truth is it's still bad for your health in the short term too and not worth it.

When I picked it up, I justified it to my friend by saying “quitting later will build character” 😂

We have less harmful way of smoking already. AI will invent even less harmful smoking substance before curing cancer.

Everywhere I read says stay in shape and dont do anything stupid so you live long enough to see the singularity lol

That's bold to assume you can afford the cure

You can’t gate keep the cure eventually other labs and countries will leak it

One could also choose to read into it as "Researchers are taking up smoking because they suspect cancer probably won't get them faster than T2:Judgement Day". Potayto potahto.

Bruh, even if smoking had no effect on your health or if it was somehow beneficial no way I'm spending that kind of money on fucking cigs. It's such an expensive habit all just to make your breath smell like ass and get lung cancer.

What about curing the damage it'll do to your lungs?
I know regenerative medicine will happen of course, but I'm guessing that's not at the same time.

Damage to you lungs, liver, heart, skin... it's a nasty habit. I avoid smokers like the plague. Just the smell of a smoker after they've had one cigarette makes me nauseous.

Mandatory psych evaluation for researchers should be a thing.

Lmao. As someone who quit smoking recently, I get it. Life and work is significantly more boring without smoking. 😄 If we get a cure I will absolutely pick it back up.

u/lib3r8 2h ago
Eh it's just nasty. The nicotine just trying to convince you to have more and more is pernicious and just not pleasant.
4
u/M4roon 2h ago
I never felt that tbh. Smoked 3-8 a day. I work a lot, rarely take days off, workout everyday, am usually in a calorie deficit, and save all my money, so it was sort of my one relaxing thing. :T
2
u/lib3r8 2h ago
It's a stimulant it doesn't relax. I mean compared to withdrawal systems sure.
4
u/M4roon 2h ago
It's the rhythm it gives your days that is the relaxing part. You're basically making sure you're taking regular breaks throughout the day.

u/boostman 2h ago
As someone who used to smoke - you’re going to unlearn that and find new things that give rhythm to your day. Also, you can just take breaks anyway.
2
u/M4roon 2h ago
I hope so. the last two weeks I get up, walk around, make a coffee, find nothing to do and then just sit down and work. I guess this is why people get bored or fk a lot. 😂😂

u/boostman 2h ago
I found I missed the excuse to leave the room sometimes during social occasions. So now I just go out for five minutes anyway.

I mean you can say the same about food and the byproduct is way nastier than nicotine

The most committed AI people show signs of being in an apocalyptic cult. I believe we are witnessing the birth of a secular religion.
The HBO series The Leftovers had a cult where the members took up smoking with a similarly nihilistic motivation that the singularity made it irrelevant.

Find out which of the health issues caused by smoking takes longest to cure and see if you can out live it. The cure for lung cancer maybe lets you live long enough to die from throat cancer which maybe takes a few years longer to cure, all while getting emphysema and hardening of the arteries.
I used to smoke a long time ago. I sometimes miss it. But at my age (50s) LEV is nothing to put money on (not to mention all the extra mucus making colds and flus extra fun).

finding the cure doesn't mean it will be cheap. There is currently too big a money making industry. They are not going to let that go.

Just Don't Die.
Also I wouldn't trust anything C level from Palantir says. I think this is made up. Or someone somewhere at a party said it jokingly.

That convinces me once again that “two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity. Though I’m not quite sure about the universe yet.”
