AI Statement by Tim Sweeney (Epic Games founder and CEO)
65
u/aKaizuh 3h ago
Ive been saying all AAA studios will be absuing AI in the near future. Game size and scope keep increasing, you cant have a 10-15 year wait period between every launch, and gamers don't want that either.
It is inevitable.
5
17
u/mightbebeaux 3h ago
the budget for AAA is honestly absurd too.
game journos and devs have laundered this idea that game development is a jobs program and that publishers should wait 7 years and spend 9 figures funding human-made slop.
major studios releasing 1 game per console generation is crazy, and the budgets are making it so that those games have to sell tens of millions of copies just to break even. if you miss that mark it could bankrupt the studio.
2
u/Sad_Panic5898 2h ago
I don't think that's because of the devs. It's more because of the upper management.
-1
u/mightbebeaux 2h ago edited 2h ago
maybe there are game devs saying “you know what, budgets are too high, production schedules are too long, and teams are too large” but i never see it because it’s against their economic interest. i see more of them being vocal about pushing for unionization and fighting against crunch.
that’s not to absolve management of blame, there is plenty of that to go around. but everyone already just defaults to blaming managers and publishers. just look at microsoft under phil spencer. they’re the poster child of being completely hands off with studios, giving them obscene budgets and “letting the creatives cook.” it’s been horrific for them in terms of both output and quality but everyone is blaming them as the publisher for layoffs and downsizing. creatives need hard supervision and boundaries.
2
u/Sad_Panic5898 2h ago
Well, smaller studios are doing better than AAA studios nowadays. You have to understand that Wolverine had a budget of $300 million, right? There were more things in the game than what was eventually revealed. This means the developers were trying to do something new and exciting, but their ideas were pushed back.
Even GTA has its problems. Big companies often don't care about their developers. I've seen many developers get fired even after working on successful games. The AAA gaming industry is led by people who don't genuinely care about games. At least the developers want people to enjoy their games. Management, on the other hand, doesn't care.A huge chunk of the money goes to management rather than the developers. If you want to ensure that your successful games remain successful in future iterations, you have to retain your developers. But most of the time, AAA studios fail to do that.

I mean yeah it's super obvious if you follow AI news and isn't an anti ai person stuck in denial

u/pingwing 3h ago
That isn't going to go over well in the gaming community.

u/Recent_Pollution8665 2h ago
just tell them that gabe has spoken highly of AI as well, they’ll change their tune real quick.
most people aren’t even aware of this quote because newell barely makes games these days. it’s easy to dodge heat for AI usage when you make money without even having to put anything out.

We get one BG3, Skyrim, etc. scale game every few years
Development cycles on live service games are brutal and require exceptional teams and demand to make happen
Reducing those barriers is an absolute win for developers and gamers. Full stop.
•
u/jarkkowork 14m ago
Skyrim was nice BUT still a pretty generic game. AI hopefully will make games with more odd/artsy/experimental ideas possible while still having A grade production quality
•
u/chcampb 0m ago
Skyrim is pretty generic today, but, it was not when it was released, it was incredibly detailed and sharp for the era.
Here is a review from 2011 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bH1GUi8rNQk
But also, modern skyrim has been modded so hard it's almost unrecognizable

People are going to bitch and complain to no end about this, but:
- This is where the industry has been for a while
- Claude is better and faster at coding than effectively everyone in the field, that's not a criticism of anyone in the field, it is exceptionally good.
- This was inevitable.
- This 100% will lead to faster game development and quickly collapse the multi-year development cycle of AA+ titles, this will be good for the industry.
•
•
u/CashFirm573 18m ago
Yeah, lot of people forget studios cut features from games that make it better due to the development time, if anything games are about to get so much better then before.
Recently I made post that got rather big in the biggest game dev community, and I got nothing but positive comments, not single person ask if I used AI (the game was made 100% made with AI every single part, bar music and sound effects) people don't care as long as it's quality over sloppy copy and paste games.
47
u/Deto 3h ago
Given how much so many people hate AI, I wonder what the motivation is to make this tweet?
83
u/ZealousidealBus9271 3h ago
It’s for shareholders and industry partners, Sweeney doesn’t care about the Reddit/Twitter echo chamber
18
u/KindaQuite 3h ago
Worth reminding that Epic is still a private company and Sweeney is still based af
21
u/ZealousidealBus9271 3h ago
private companies do also have shareholders
10
u/ChrisFromIT 3h ago
Yeah, Sweeney and tencent pretty much in this case.
I think it is more gear towards video game studios
17
u/Active_Lemon_8260 3h ago
The hate really only exists online and Reddit, tbh.
•
u/Kastar_Troy 1h ago
You think it will be less with robots on the street?
Most people out there arent even really thinking about it yet...
•
u/n_lens 1h ago
The areas where gaming is actually a core focus?!
•
u/Villad_rock 1h ago
Most gamers don’t use reddit or participate in online discourses. Otherwise ff would be one of the best selling game while cod one of the least selling. Reddit is the core focus of online leftist gamer.
33
u/DemoDisco 3h ago
A company coding by hand could never keep up with the amount of releases and features produced by rival companies using AI tools.
Coding by hand for games will become boutique/ artisanal work, not something you want to turn your multi billion dollar company into.
-3
u/Deto 3h ago
I don't disagree but they should just do that behind the scenes then. Not announce it
3
u/eternal_edenium 2h ago
Investors are watching.
Investors believe that AI = productivity boost= more money in their pockets.
•
u/-Posthuman- 1h ago
And anyone who ever watched an LLM write a line of code knows that it absolutely is a massive productivity boost.
•
u/-Posthuman- 1h ago
Why hide it? All they are doing is openly talking about the thing that every other game dev is also doing, just not talking about.
If a game company is still telling you they aren’t using AI, they are either lying to you or they are idiots doomed to fail.
•
u/Deto 34m ago
Why hide it? Because they'll lose sales. There's nobody that's going to play a game just because the dev said they used AI, but there will be people who boycott it over that.
•
u/-Posthuman- 22m ago
Are they going to boycott every other game that comes out starting last year and for the rest of time? Or are they just going to buy games from companies that lie to them about not using AI?
I think if I were you, I would assume that the billionaire owner of one of the biggest video game companies in the world knows something you might not know about the business he owns, and said what he said for reasons you might not be aware of.
It’s possible his perspective differs from yours, possibly as a result of having data you don’t have.
•
u/tanrgith 4m ago
Every studio is asked about AI use by the purity testing game media
They'd have to straight up lie to keep it behind the scenes
-4
u/Longjumping-Ad514 2h ago
Except entire Grand Theft Auto 6 was created by hand.
15
u/old_ironlungz 2h ago
And that will likely be the last time it ever happens.
Maybe, just maybe, it won’t take another decade until GTA VII.
-6
u/Longjumping-Ad514 2h ago
They’re just closing Rockstar in November?
•
u/-Posthuman- 1h ago
Maybe by next November if they truly are refusing to use any new technology developed after 2024. Because if that’s the case, it won’t be long until they get left behind by a bunch of kids building games after school.
•
•
u/Longjumping-Ad514 1h ago
Clearly you’re an expert game maker.
•
u/-Posthuman- 45m ago edited 35m ago
And what if I am?
But I don’t have to be to recognize that using the best tools for the job is how you achieve more, more efficiently. There is a reason we don’t use shovels to dig ditches anymore. And you expect somebody to use a shovel when someone is offering them a backhoe for a fraction of what the shovel costs?
3
u/Recent_Pollution8665 2h ago
no he’s saying by the time gta 7 comes out, it will have had significant AI usage in its development pipeline.
hell, if gta 7 comes out 13 years later like gta 6 did, the whole completed game might have been made with AI at that point. in a decade from now entire AAA games can be made with AI.
11
u/DemoDisco 2h ago
We will never see a project of that scale ever done by hand again. It will really mark the end of an era in game dev.
-3
u/Longjumping-Ad514 2h ago
Where did you get that info? John Rockstar himself?
•
•
u/french_crusade 1h ago
I’m a lead developer and most people and companies now just use Claude/Chatgpt/Local LLMs to write code, it’s just so much easier and less tedious.
•
•
u/-Posthuman- 1h ago
And it only took them what? The better part of a decade and a couple billion dollars? Meanwhile, AI tech already exists than can generate 3d environments on the fly and produce characters you can sit down and have a conversation with about any topic you like. And that’s tech an amateur can use to start building a GTA clone with today. Give it a year or so and we’ll start seeing the equivalent of a GTA 7 dropping on a weekly basis.
GTA 6 is going to age very poorly, and will soon be the poster child for the limitations of human-only game development.
Also…. the entirety of GTA was not created by hand unless they hired one person to sit behind every coder at the company with a gun to their head. Don’t be naive.
•
u/trapeology 21m ago edited 6m ago
I agree with AI is going to accelerate game development but saying "GTA 6 will age poorly cause limitation of human-only development" just show you don't know what actually made a game good. Hell a good game dev will know dropping GTA more often, like once a year, will be franchise suicide
AI can accelerate the back-end of game development, but there are way more to a game than just coding and modeling and that what matter. Why do you think Rockstar made their own engine instead of Unreal?
•
u/-Posthuman- 8m ago
Because Epic takes 30% of profits after your first $1 million. Well, technically after you pass a certain threshold, you can negotiate. But Rockstar (understandably) wasn’t willing to do that.
And yes, believe it or not, I realize that there is more to games than code and models… and infrastructure, and revision control, and code distribution, and sound, and animation, and, and, and…
And I also know that Rockstar are not the only ones on the planet that can do it. Little indie companies regularly release great games overflowing with that secret sauce you’re hinting at. What they lack is the funding for more coding, modeling, etc. AI provides that, and can provide it cheap.
Talented and creative people don’t suddenly become brain dead the instant they send a prompt to an AI. It’s a tool. And like any tool, it works best in the hands of a professional. Giving creative professionals the ability to realize their vision cheaper and faster is a good thing for those who want to see that vision realized. This is very simple. So why is that so difficult for some people to understand?
•
u/Longjumping-Ad514 1h ago
Hah, I guess we will see. I think your understanding of storytelling, music, graphics, coding and animation is what is going to age poorly here.
These AI-made shells are pathetic attempts at human entertainment. It’s an amazing showcase of how all they can do is copy, and astonishingly poorly at that, while having entire internet to learn from.
•
u/YeetYourSkeet 1h ago
You act like it is 100% AI or 100% human and no in-between. Humans can work with AI to improve productivity whilst not just outputting slop.
•
u/-Posthuman- 44m ago edited 38m ago
Hah, I guess we will see.
We will. I’m betting on technology moving forward. And I guess you’re betting on the forward momentum of technological advancement since the discovery of fire suddenly coming to a screeching halt?
Lol I’ll give you 100 trillion to 1 odds.
What if I told you AI can be used for more than inputting a single prompt and using whatever it shits out on the first attempt? Are you aware of AI tools that go beyond simple prompt entry? And have you considered what an extremely talented and creative person can do with tools that allow them to realize their vision in a fraction of the time current tools allow?
Or do you just imagine that the moment they hit Submit they instantly receive a lobotomy?
•
u/Villad_rock 58m ago
2 billion dollars. What other companies can spend this and yet gta6 will still be heavily limited what is potentially possible with ai in the future with a fraction of the cost.
•
•
u/tanrgith 0m ago
Maybe the "art" was made without AI use. But anyone thinking AI isn't widely used by most, if not all, the programmers working on GTA6 to some degree are completely delusional
12
u/mikerz85 3h ago
Sweeney doesn't care, but more importantly - AI hate is inevitably a phase. The more people like Sweeney make announcements like this, the quicker it happens.
•
u/-Posthuman- 1h ago
Yep, AI is just the new CGI. Everybody hated it until they couldn’t even see it anymore. Now it doesn’t even get mentioned unless it’s implementation was egregiously bad.

Gamers have overnight went from absolute vociferous and vehement hatred for all things AI to saying things like “we will own everything and we will love it”.
lol I got whiplash from the change.
•
u/redditscraperbot2 0m ago
I think it's been building for a while. There are some genuine concerns that people have with AI that shouldn't be dismissed lightly, but the stereotypical anti AI redditor is becoming a very ugly and abrasive stereotype to be associated with. I'm not surprised a few tempting use cases won a lot of people over from a side that basically lives off of being miserable.
2
u/BlastingFonda 2h ago
Can you give some links / examples of the game decompilations?
2
u/MysteriousPepper8908 2h ago
Perhaps that isn't the correct word, a lot of people are calling it reverse engineering, I don't know. Restate is a big one that takes EA's Skate and adds a bunch of new content and functionality. Just look up "game reverse engineering" on YouTube and all the links are about it, this is just the first one.
2
u/BlastingFonda 2h ago
Ah, okay yeah, I saw a video of Spidey swinging through Arkham City a few days ago and didn’t realize that this what I was seeing - a reverse engineer / decomp of two games then mashed up or something to that effect.
6
u/iJustSeen2Dudes1Bike 2h ago
This is smart. He's basically saying they'll try to use AI to innovate instead of running a skeleton crew. Shouldn't people be happy about that?
•
u/-Posthuman- 1h ago
Because he knows what every other owner of every game dev company knows. Refusing to embrace AI, the frontier of new software technology, is fucking stupid. Anyone who refuses to use AI is essentially putting themselves in a time capsule and saying they’re not moving forward past 2024. And anyone who doesn’t decide to encase themselves in amber won’t even have a choice when every dev tool is transforming into an AI harness of some sort.
I’m sure there will always be a few quaint little companies who make a name for themselves with games that are “100% human”. But they’ll never have a prayer of being competitive, and will basically exist as a novelty… until the novelty wears off.
AI is the new CGI. Everybody hates it until it just becomes the way things are done, getting better and better because of economic demands and practical limitations - to the point where only the most egregiously bad cgi is even detectable.

You Can Do Something And Not Tweet About It. Do You Understand What I Am Saying?
•
u/-Posthuman- 26m ago
I Understand That You Don’t Know How Capitalization Works.
I also understand that you didn’t have to make that Reddit post.
And yet, you did. Presumably, you did so because you had a reason. No?
Have you considered there may be factors in play you aren’t aware of, and that he made that tweet for a reason you (having no knowledge of the actual context) aren’t aware of?
•
u/Deto 22m ago
Have you considered there may be factors in play you aren’t aware of, and that he made that tweet for a reason you (having no knowledge of the actual context) aren’t aware of?
Yes, 100% this. That is why I posted my question! I thought somebody else here might know!
And a ton of people somehow took it as me making some sort of anti-AI challenge. I thought maybe there would be someone on here that was more knowledgeable or had a better theory. But instead I get like a dozen replies that miss the point. Maye just bad reading comprehension? Like, if you can't answer my question, you can just shut up and let someone else answer it. That's an option for you!
•
u/-Posthuman- 16m ago
lol Forgive me. I thought social media was for discussion. I didn’t realize we were all here just to answer questions for you.
Also, I gave you an answer. It’s not my fought you didn’t like it.
Or did you really expect to just get a single reply from Tim Sweeney explaining what he meant?
•
u/M4K1M4 1h ago
I stopped reading the second you said "Because he knows..."
No he does not, his product is a huge pile of garbage lol. Epic is one of the most hated platforms in the gaming industry.
•
u/-Posthuman- 1h ago
And you can tell because they are such failures right? Also, Epic is a company, not a platform. And while their storefront is often maligned by people who spend so much time on the internet that they can get all wound up about an internet storefront, the Unreal Engine is the most used engine in the world, and Fortnight is making billions.
Yes, he knows. And I dare say he even knows something you don’t. Like them or not, Epic as a company is a massive success by any metric.
•
u/One_Improvement_6470 58m ago
Someone associated with something that is so vehemently disliked by me and others that I know can't possibly be right about something that I know so little about. It just can't be the case. Therefore I'll stop reading the rational words you wrote and double down on my irrational bias.
•
u/-Posthuman- 32m ago
Yep. That about sums it up. If OP was smart they would just copy your post and paste it for any future posts they want to make. It would save everyone some time.

u/theobiwanjacobi 2h ago edited 2h ago
The writing is on the wall at this point. I think Tim sees what is happening in math and in general with AI. They either keep up with technology or they don't.
Public opinion will shift as soon as people realize AI-assisted games will soon be capable of being infinitely better than those that are not.
How many $300M+ have we seen fail in the last year? AAA studios became wayyyy too bloated. It is not sustainable. These companies have no actual values. As soon as AI becomes accepted and viable, they will all be using it in an instant lol.
3
u/Weird-Care-6654 3h ago
It's for shareholders. AI has been used as a smoke screen by these guys to get as much funding as possible.
That has being the case for the last 2 years. I work in big tech and this has been happening since long ago.
3
u/LugosFergus 3h ago
There was a Bloomberg article about Epic Games having to delay its Disney project. It also mentions that there was a mandate to use AI for coding and art, so Tim's putting a positive spin on it.
My understanding of the project is that it's a bit of a dumpster fire. AI might speed up some aspects, but it can't fix bad project management.
•
u/Legitimate-Store3771 1h ago
People hate it because they don't understand it. It's a productivity multiplier. Used responsibly, games can start to look really fucking cool, and be developed in shorter periods. 99% certain Blizzard has adopted it to meet the release cadence they announced at Blizzcon and given the fact that the community response to the games they've set out to build is largely positive, it's itching to set a precedent in the gaming industry just like all industries.
•
u/Sanguiniusius 30m ago
The problem is its really good at tasks with a verifiably true outcome (like producing a piece of code to pass a unit check) but its really bad at subjective work (like producing a piece of analysis on what feature will bring the most roi)
Yet you have a bunch of bosses telling you to use it for both. Its crazy.
I'll use AI for those verifiable tasks because its really useful there.
I will write my own analysis because: A my writing is more distinct and more likely to stick in someone's head than homogenized llms writing and B my output is better in that subjective space.
People's bosses are putting people off the usage of the tool because they try to force adoption for use cases its bad at and its just frustrating. When and if it gets good at subjective analysis people will naturally pick it up there.
I think this is all driven by over investment in the tools forcing overselling of their functionality to justify the valuations. Itll all come crashing down (it already is tbh with data centre projects starting to fail) LLMs are really useful tools at 'brute forcing' replication- they will survive the adjustment and see long term adoption for this purpose.

1
u/RiboSciaticFlux 2h ago
That's a bit hyperbolic. People talk about hating it but just like social media, nobody wants it to go away and it's not.
1
0
u/williamtkelley 3h ago
Excepting obvious low quality slop AI, I think a lot of people hate AI because it makes them feel important and trendy.
1
u/staplepies 3h ago
Could also be a cultural/hiring thing. Like game devs who like AI come work here, and those that don't you will be ostracized. Like what a lot of companies did in response to wokeness, saying they wouldn't tolerate politics in the workplace. Some hated it, some lived it, but it's guaranteed to increase ideological alignment in your future employee makeup.

Opus 5.5.
I had it make this music video in blender with one prompt. It took it 6 days to do it and render it on a laptop: https://youtu.be/wcsgd0_iYuU?si=1E2LNS-0tCe76q4s
I gave it no direction but the song, and said be creative.
We are getting to the point where if AI is not embedded in everything you’re doing, you have already lost.

You commented in wrong subreddit lol, you will get more level answers in some game dev community, people worship Ai in this subreddit

I am surprised they moved to 100% AI Code though. I do believe many companies are doing 50% or more AI code, but "no human code" is a surprise. More companies might do this with Epic Games mandating it

I fail to see why a human would write a line of code at this point other than just for fun. It’s absolutely unnecessary.

100% AI Code has been standard for over a year now
•
u/VeganBigMac Anti-Hypepost Safetyist 19m ago
100%? Nah. The models weren't there last October. Around that time it was just hitting the point where you could include some sort of agentic work on specific parts of features, but anything larger was more or less useless.
I would say somewhere during spring is where we really started to see the transition to agentic code by default and summertime where manual coding was more or less gone day to day.
Even now I'd say there is still like ~1% I do of hand refactoring where it's just quicker to do the refactoring myself instead of hope the model gets it right.
•
u/geft 1h ago
My company has been doing this, though it's not a mandate. Opus 5.5 codes better than the vast majority of people. I still need to review the code but it can be fully AI generated by just telling Claude what to do or what to fix right in the PR itself. I'm on mobile so it's not as frictionless as backend as I still need to look at the UI and stuff but I don't even need to open the IDE to get things done.

u/Kanute3333 3h ago
They have no choice. You can't stand still while technology moves forward.
5
u/ZealousidealBus9271 3h ago
I definitely though 2026 was the year of 20-40% AI coding, but Epic Games coming out with 100% AI Code is a surprise. Thought this would be 2027
7
u/coatatopotato 2h ago
Over the year, the quality of AI code rose dramatically. Early 2026 feels like a past era.
9
u/Kanute3333 3h ago edited 3h ago
The only right decision. It makes no sense to carry on as before and refuse to embrace AI out of idealism. The quality we've had until now can be produced much faster by far fewer people, so large studios should use their advantage to create things that weren't possible before.
6
u/Chronotheos 3h ago
We’re gonna have so many games to play, we’ll need AI agents to play them for us.

u/M4roon 3h ago
mhmm.. NTE released with AI art (and probably more under the hood) and tried denying it at first. Then Amiino just put out a game + art chalk full of AI and just kinda rolled with it. Now EPIC is proudly going full bore into it.
Game dev is definitely about to enter full AI mode, and it's happening in real time basically. The switch from outright denial to proud acceptance happened in a few months. ^

u/VR_Raccoonteur 2h ago
This is likely why they've said they're retiring blueprints despite all the complaints about it. It's not as easy to have an AI create blueprints as it is to just have it write C++ code.
•
u/edgroovergames 1h ago
This is probably true, but also a lot of studios don't like blueprints because they're impossible to merge / resolve conflicts. The larger a team gets, the more likely to have multiple people needing to change the same file. Also, projects also often have several development branches active at once. Maybe a live branch, where bug fixes are made and patched out to the live game. Then a free content update branch where new content is being developed. Then a paid content update branch where a larger expansion of the game is being worked on. It can be a real nightmare with projects like this to have assets that will change over time but that can't be reliably merged.
•
u/Paragonswift 55m ago
Of course he says that the goal isn’t fewer people, even though it is. If he said what he actually thinks a lot of people would quit before he had time to replace them.
•
5
u/DoubleGG123 3h ago
I get some of the hate that people have for Tim Sweeney and Epic in general, but this is completely logical given what is happening and what is going to happen. Most game companies will either have to adapt or be overtaken by those that do. And the problem is not just other game developers in big studios. At some point, AI will be so good that even small teams and indie developers will start to compete with the big leagues, being able to make AAA games quickly and easily. Either fail to adapt and keep being anti-AI or be overtaken by those who realize what's coming.
1
u/NikopikVR 3h ago
Ok but why anybody will use Unreal with AI when you can use Godot with AI?
What's the added value of Unreal when AI make it as simple to use a Open source engine and create plugins for it in a matter of minutes?
•
u/dionysus_project 1h ago
Animations, niagara, volumetrics, lighting, material properties, blueprints. Epic royalty fees are very fair and transparent, all things considered.

Tim already knows AAA is dead soon. GTA 6 may be the last AAA game ever released. I highly doubt we will ever see any other Skyrim 2 or RDR3 or anything that isn't in the pipeline already.

Why wouldn't we see skyrim 2? isnt the fact it's buildable in a few months with a few guys make it compelling to do?

Unfortunately with how easy it is to pirate software and games right now it's hard to say.
Edit: downvote if you want, but this is a conversation taking place in companies right now

There's nothing about AI coding that makes AAA games less likely.

I see a world in which the mainstream opinion on newly released AAA games is "why would I play that when I can make a shitty imitation in claude?" - not just that, but also pretty good imitations by small teams with AI. Therefore making the $100+ price tags + microtransactions they're asking for unsustainable, therefore making huge AAA productions less viable. All just conjecture though.

At a certain point, once everyone is using AI at the same level, then there won't be any imbalances like this.
1000 developers + AI will be able to create something significantly better (and faster) than 5 people + the same AI.

Depends on what’s possible. Even before AI someone like Notch was able to make Minecraft which no AAA company had anything like at the time

The studios are cooked maybe, but AAA scene will flourish since it will be far more accessible to small teams.

AI isn’t good enough to fully make AAA games from scratch yet. give it another 5 to 10 years.
right now it’s only capable of making N64 level stuff, and that’s only with the expensive frontier models. while impressive, it doesn’t compare to stuff like gta 6.
if anything AI will threaten indie games and AA games before harming the big boys.

could take less depending on how fast progress moves. im just going off of current projections.

I don't know shit about the industry, but I watched all the Double Fine docs, and almost none of them were actually sitting down developing and doing C++ code in their game engine. Its all about ideas and art. You don't need to load a game with millions of lines of code for features, you have to make a fun game that looks cool.

A lot of people, especially corporate raiders/ vulture capitalists, are using AI to clear house of underlying cost. This means the same product, the same outcome, at a lower cost. this is good for gdp and "growth" on a line, but really just means stripping the meat out of a company and hoping it stays afloat.
What Tim is saying here is that bringing AI in will allow the company to produce more and at a higher capacity, because the same amount of people will be putting out 1.5x the output.
thats the marketing part of what hes saying, but in reality hes just spinning the move of Epic using AI in everything as a good thing for everyone instead of just for shareholders.

We … will see every time I see actual data on this not a sales pitch by OpenAi, the productivity gains (especially on established projects) seem to be in the range of 10-25 percent less for senior engineers, more for junior engineers. So yea, its here to stay and it will change how SWEs are working, but …

If he’s actually going to use AI as a force multiplier then he’s just acknowledging reality. People are getting tired of huge releases that take the better part of a decade to develop and mostly end up underwhelming anyway. AAA needs to get back to short development cycles and creative experimentation.

“Do more with the same people” is the dream. “Do the same with fewer people” is the usual reality. Genuinely curious which one Epic ends up being.

full on AI unleashed on AAA video game studios might produce some insane stuff. Too bad GTA6 couldnt benefit much from AI.

u/reasonmonkey 3h ago
Correct. This is the correct idea: do more stuff that was impossible to do before.
The "do the same with less people" folks lack imagination.
