Firefighters with paramedic certifications make well over 100k in most US metros without a college degree. That said, the training pipeline is physically and intellectually demanding but can be done right out of high school within 3 years with far less cost than a college degree. The lifestyle is also hard, but you get extremely good benefits as well as first responder discounts to a ton of businesses.
26
u/Just_here2020 4h ago
Youād think firefighting would pay a lot more since youāre running into a fire
28
u/Fidel_Cashflows 4h ago
I say 100k, but it's closer to 200k with 7-10 years of experience. Incredibly dangerous and therefore one of the best uses of tax dollars, but name another job where you can make that much at 30y/o without a degree with purely shift-based work.

u/gawrgouda 3h ago

True, but oil jobs are traveling far away to sacrifice your body and lungs in service of oil companies instead of saving local people's lives.

4
u/dont_tread_on_M dumbass 1h ago
Not just that! In fact, firefighters don't run as often into fires as people think, thanks to fire alarms and better fire prevention measures.
In most places these days, professional firefighters are as much paramedics as firefighters, which makes the job even more demanding.

I have a brother who's a firefighter and it's not like there's a lack of applicants. It's incredibly competitive and pays really well. He makes 6 figures.
2
u/alghiorso 8m ago
Firefighting in California is so competitive that I had a friend who worked wild fires for 10+ years, did all sorts of volunteer stuf, worked as an EMT for years, got all the certifications and such he could find and finally after like 15 years he got a full time position. It's a very sought after job that's highly competitive in California at least
-14

I wanted to be a fire medic, starting pay in my area was $22/hr. Starting pay for cops? $39/hr
I became a cop
I got my EMR certification anyways which is cool
For comparison, you can graduate highschool and start at a manufacturing plant with no experience making $25/hr. Fire/medics have to complete 2 years of schooling, costing about $12k.
The lads I know that are fire medics can do it because their wives make a bundle of a cash

1
u/Fidel_Cashflows 4h ago
Where the fuck do you live? Starting salaries for people with fire/paramedic licenses in big metros are 80-120k and go up from there with experience. Even basic EMT's make more than $22/hr
3
u/ammonthenephite 4h ago
Like nursing and other jobs, some places pay really well, others don't pay for shit. Back when I did firefighting seattle started at 90k a year, while smaller cities in Idaho that came to try and recruit us out of fire school were only offering 12 dollars an hour. It's insane how much it can vary.
1
u/Fidel_Cashflows 3h ago
I mean, yeah. Small cities in Idaho have maybe 1-2 calls a shift at the worst. You're just getting paid to sit on standby most of the time and the salary reflects that. I got my EMT license within a month during a summer while doing my pre-med degree in Atlanta and immediately got offered $30/hr for part-time night shifts. Those shifts were intense, but that hourly pay with a 1 month pipeline and 4k tuition was a fantastic return on value.

u/AutoModerator 4h ago
Dick sucking has made me paranoid
I had this plan to give head to a man and receive head from a woman to test if I was gay, but itās backfired and now I become borderline schizo whenever I go outside. I offered to suck this dude off on Grindr who lives very close by (I ended up pussying out) and I accidentally gave him some details that very easily allows him to spot me out in a crowd. I have no idea what he looks like and whenever I see a somewhat in shape guy walking by I immediately accuse him of being the dude I was gonna blow.
I went to the store today to pick up some zucchini for a barbecue and every time a car drove by I stared into the windshield to see if I was about to be recognised. Whenever I make eye contact with a dude I microanalysis his facial expressions to see if he suspects me or not. I am deeply afraid that he is my neighbour and I will need to move if my identity is blown. Itās a lot like the last scene in sopranos where everyone who walked into the diner could be there to wack Tony.

And don't forget that about 68% are volunteer firefighters in the US and don't get paid to do the work

u/Vast_Interaction_537 16m ago
And the US uses prison crews for firefighting as well, basically slave labor with no pathway to a job after release
17
u/petitejesuis 2h ago
The real issue is that fire departments are old boys clubs. My brother is a fireman and even though he had connections it took him 4 years to get hired. I know a family, dad is a fireman, all 3 the sons are firemen, and I'm sure their sons will be. So yeah, there are a lot of white men firefighting

Civil service job and not looked down upon, the way police are.
Go get your 20 years in and wind up with your pension to retire.
Nowhere near as dangerous either. Go dealing with fires vs dealing with a criminal breaking the law.
Not sure id say it's as much "old boys club" as it is for people when they are done with military service. Got a family member who applied before. Aced it and still would up 50+ on the list, due to bonus factors like military service, EMT certification or being a minority.
Since 9/11 they've basically prioritized service members.
21
u/Might__E 4h ago
nobody's mentioned the slave firefighters that prisons rent out and pay them like $1/day to tackle fires without proper equipment and risk their lives to profit the prison that owns them
68
u/prospybintrappin 5h ago
How could you possibly interpret this to be complaining that white people become firefighters when it's obviously obviously about urging other groups to become firefighters. Do you think there's people out there who think white guys should stop applying to be firefighters?
58
u/ThreeSticks_ 5h ago
Itās quite literally not urging minorities to become firefighters. Itās doing the opposite - urging fire departments to seek more diversity. Read the shi: https://hbr.org/2018/12/making-u-s-fire-departments-more-diverse-and-inclusive?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=hbr
33
u/GandalfTheGay_69 4h ago
This is exactly the problem with a lot of diversity programs. They demand equal outcome instead of equal opportunity. If the applicants are mostly white then it's only logical that the workforce is mostly white. A diversity program should be about removing biases during the hiring process but since that is too hard to judge objectively they skip this whole process and go straight to just demanding diversity targets, which is ridiculous.
12
u/FlutterKree 2h ago
Have you ever asked why it's mostly <race> applicants?
The purpose of a diversity program is to actually ask those questions. To potentially remove non qualifying barriers (grants to people for training/school, etc.). They can boost diversity even if it is mostly white people applying. And without compromising on the qualifications.
2
u/Cobracrystal 1h ago
it would be great if they asked those questions. they usually dont. instead they end up setting quotas.
1
4
2
u/Boysenberrysnboys 2h ago
Yeah I agree, it's not a very generous reading to assume this article is blaming minorities for not being represented when that's never been an effective way for diversifying institutions.

2
u/P4ndak1ller Literally 1984 š” 4h ago
I know what youāre saying; but unironically yes. A lot of tradies and aggies are pulling the ladder up behind them in terms of passing on knowledge and skills. Theyād rather hold on to their job for as long as they can, than teach someone how to do it as well as them and risk being replaced.
3
u/notaredditeryet 4h ago
Not sure about the tradies and I agree that people donāt have patience for beginners, but to say cattle ranchers are afraid of getting replaced makes no sense. Itās not like the young ranch hands are gonna hostile takeover the old ranchers land and cattle. Many are self-employed. Theres no evil boss to throw out the old expensive labor for young cheap labor.
2
u/SpaceBug176 5h ago
Why would they be urging other groups to be firefighters?? Why the hell do we need to diverse every group!?
2
u/imnotaneggman 2h ago
If there's 100 white guys applying to be firefighters, and the department hires the 5 best ones, then they're the top 5% of their group. if there's 200 people in general applying, regardless of race/gender, and the department still hires the 5 best ones, then they're the top 2.5%. Twice the statistical quality of candidates, and all they needed to do was to start trying to attract more people.
5
u/DudeWithParrot 5h ago
I think the comment implies that other groups should do their part and become firefighters. Not that the group should be diverse
5
u/SpaceBug176 5h ago
Isn't the reason white people make up most of firefighters because majority of the people are white?
As for why they're male, well, I guess women just think they're not strong or just don't wanna do it.
6
u/DudeWithParrot 5h ago
US white population is 60% to 72%. So I guess it depends what the article on the image means by overwhelming.
0
u/OxygenAddict 1h ago
Well if someone read the fucking article referenced in the tweet they would know that coming from diverse backgrounds helps you understand the needs of people from diverse backgrounds, for example in EMERGENCY SITUATIONS LIKE, SAY, A FIRE. They tell the story of a female firefighter who urged her crew to change the protocols when dealing with little children, for example.
3
u/SpaceBug176 45m ago
Yeah lets not update the procotols from the start but instead hope we get lucky enough for the team we sent to have someone that can understand the needs of people we find in the scene AND be good at thinking of new plans under stress
Yes, I know they trained to be good at thinking under stress, but then why don't they just train them for these situations as well?

The people in charge don't have professional standards, the government and cops and feds and fire fighter chiefs are mostly horrible people that only care about themselves, some are bound to be racist.

The article goes into other aspects of firefighting like the fact most arent just pulling people out of homes. Emergency medical care, talking down traumatized victims etc so there are jobs like that in firehouses that could be filled.
The jobs highly paid and has great benefits and maybe its different where you live but here its a bunch of boomer maga good old boys club making decisions. So I could see the problems.
