Note: Not sure how much putting it here is gonna help cause I feel this is where a lot of the Newark and NB people talk, I'm talking about Camden but r/rutgerscamden seems kinda dead, any advice welcome though
So I am currently a student at Rowan University, living with my parents trying to move into an apartment with my coworker and transfer as a commuter to another school. I’m starting my research now and trying to gage what may be the best option of the schools I’m looking at being Rutgers Camden, TCNJ and Rider (though I’m not 100% opposed to staying at Rowan if that ends up being a better fit). My idea outside of just looking around on uni websites was to make a list of things I don’t like about Rowan and go on the school subreddits and see how it compares to experiences of people at these schools. Some of my issues include the following:
Proximity
By this I mean it’s way too close to where I was raised. Obviously that includes my parents who I still live with but more influentially, people I went to high school with. I personally went to school in Cumberland County and I didn’t really have a great experience, so when I graduated I wanted to leave almost all those people behind. But everyday I’m on campus I see at least one person from high school, and honestly it’s kinda demoralizing and makes me feel like I’m not making progress to carve out a life that I want for myself.
Parking
I still plan on commuting to school as mentioned (on campus housing is waaaay too expensive and I don’t got financial aid like that) and I’m not sure if you’ve talked to any Rowan commuters but the parking is genuinely horrible. You have to be there super early or super late to get any somewhat decent parking. It might be one of the biggest shit shows I’ve ever seen and if I can go into a better situation, that’s super appealing.
Nothing To Do
To be fair maybe I don’t involve myself with on campus activities enough but there really isn’t a whole lot to do here, especially when I’m working weekends so it’s kinda hard to go to parties and stuff like that. I find myself in the same few places while on campus mainly just working on more school work. It’s also not even like Glassboro os neighboring cities have a lot to do either, it’s a very family centric atmosphere if you know what I mean (that’s how I feel about all of South Jersey but) and not a lot to do for my age group, compared to other places that may have more campus activities or big cities nearby.
Issues with Staff
Maybe it’s just me, maybe it’s just college, but I have not had a lot of good experiences with Rowan Staff. There’s been a few cool professors here and there but for the most part I feel they don’t really do anything. My academic advisor just kinda repeats the stuff on the website that I’ve already looked at when I ask them about stuff. I feel there’s a general amount of unresponsiveness from a lot of staff, even up to me failing a class due to dealing with outside mental health issues, trying to email the professor to see if I could get an extension on some of the work to not fail, and noting I could provide documentation of my issues, and getting completely ignored and failing the class. Maybe that’s just the way college goes, and my other friends at other unis have complained about similar problems but I don’t wanna believe that’s the case.
Overall I’m just not to fond of being at rowan, when I applied to schools during my senior year of HS it wasn’t even on my original list of apps, and now that I’m trying to get my shit together and move to doing things I actually wanna do with my life, if a transfer is on the table, I would like to explore it. Any feedback is welcome, maybe I’m not considering some factors, just drop your honest raw thoughts, ty.
