Announcement A Quick Word on Memorial Posts
Greetings humans and ratties!
The mod team has received some feedback on some posts recently, and we wanted to pass along some guidance so everyone can enjoy our wonderful subreddit.
Some of us love to see memorial posts, and celebrate the life of our loved ones who have passed on to the great blanket fort in the sky. It's a natural part of grieving, and can help us process the loss of a loved one.
For some, however, it may be triggering to see these kinds of posts, and they may not be ready to see something like that. That's okay, we all process grief differently.
After some deliberation and suggestion, we have decided to ask that all memorial posts have the "In Loving Memory" flair. This ensures that those who are not ready for these kinds of posts can skip them if needed. Again, this is not to discourage memorial posts. Please continue to make these posts to celebrate the life of your loved one.
Thank you!
-Mod Team
TL;DR: Please use "In Loving Memory" flair on memorial posts; memorial posts are still encouraged.

Questions First heat (and only)
My little Jimmie is having her first heat. She isn’t a fan on the doggie diaper. One of the reasons is I believe that my husband got the wrong size. But have any owners had any success with trying to keep little dots of blood off of everything?

6mo old rattie keeps cutting his paws
My 6 mo old rat terrier keeps cutting his paw pads down on walks outside. It happens on several of the pads. Took him to vet and they gave a cone/cream for it, suggested wearing booties for walks, and that was all. Should I be more concerned that this keeps happening? For context we live in NYC so walks consist of pavement only, and I’ve been watching where he walks to make sure he doesn’t step on glass.

So fast!
Is there anything these dogs cannot do? Any sport i throw him at he charges full speed into it.
Walking away from our first ever Sprinters trial with 233 points earning his novice title and well on the way to his next!
It was cold, snowing, wet and windy but he was in the top 3 dogs for speed running 100 yards in 9 seconds!

Am I a rat? Just adopted her and are working on a slow introduction with a cat. She’s clearly a mix of sorts but do we think she’s mixed with a rat terrier or a Jack Russel? Hoping she is more rat terrier because they are easier in general to introduce 😅
So far it has only been a day but she has been very good and slept all night. On our walks she hasn’t seen any squirrels or anything but saw some deer that were hanging out in a park. She sort of fixated, growled a bit but didn’t lunge or anything. She has growled lightly at people when we walked by them in a hallway but was sweet and moved on right after. What do you all think? TIA!
She is about 6 months and 18 pounds. If it’s not possible to tell, I understand!

Basking in the Sun ☀️ Just Saying Hello!
Hello, I am a double Rattie owner. Dazzler (Tri-Color) is 10 and Colossus (Chocolate and White) is 6. I have had both since they were puppies. I loved Dazzler so much that when I decided to get her a sibling I knew I wanted another Rattie. They are both such sweet babies. My partner and I have a void kitty too and she is the family baby so she gets a lot of reddit post attention from me. So I figured these two derps needed some love.

Questions Are you smarter than a rat terrier? 😂 [Intelligence Question!]
Of all dog breeds I've owned, my rat terrier/dachshund mix is, BY FAR, the most intelligent dog I have ever had. Before I count the ways, I want to know: How smart is your rat terrier/rat-mix? What were the CLEAR signs that they were a smart cookie? Here are mine:
- She BLEW past every other dog in puppy class - was on "roll over" when other puppies her age were trying to figure out "sit"
- She's learned the name of over 30 different toys (lambchop, llama, mini-mandrake, fat dragon, fat birbby, hedwig, candy corn. If I ask where one of them is, she will actively search the house to find it!
- She loves carrying her leash (and is VERY proud of it)
- She knows the sound of my car pulling up (and starts howling/crying)
- We rescued a dog 4 weeks ago. She's already learned her name!

Cat tree. For dogs?
Has anyone heard of something like that for dogs. My smaller dog likes to climb. I have seen her in a tree that was leaning over on its side. She’s nimble and light. I also find her on my bedside table with her whole head in my drink(usually water).
Also if I had cats I would have cat condos and wall shelves/bridges everywhere. Ya.. I want a cat. And we had an old one before.. maybe one day. But Cleo(black/white) is kind of a bitch. 😆

Looking to Adopt
Hi! I found a sweet girl to adopt. She’s approximately a year old. I have 3 other dogs and 2 kids— 9 and 16.
Would this little girl be a good addition to the family? I’ve read so many conflicting things regarding kids.

Getting a cat
Hello! Sooner or later I will be getting a cat but my main problem is with my 5 year old rattle, I don’t want him to hurt her or anything like that, he loves chasing squirrels and bunnies but the thing is I’ve never really seen him with a cat, he saw one once and he was only curious about it, didn’t bark didn’t run up to it just wanted to slowly approach but the cat did end up running away. I am wondering if I could have some tips on properly having a cat and a rattie living together. I’ve been wanting a cat for so long!

Our new Jack-Rat Willow!
I didn't know about rat terriers until we got Willow about a month ago and I have now developed an obsession for them lol. Meet our 1 year old baby Willow.
She's supposedly a rat terrier / jack Russel mix but looks more like a rat terrier TBH
