Overview on a new friend - thank you u/Drakmanka

To answer your primary question: Yes, rats are very social animals. While they technically can be kept solo, they do not do as well emotionally when kept alone. They will get very lonely when you are away; this is stressful for them and ultimately will shorten your little baby's lifespan.

Here's a few other tips and tidbits that people new to pet rats often appreciate. Warning, long-winded post, but it's all good stuff!

List:

  1. Rats love to chew. If you haven't already, get her some wooden and/or cardboard things to chew on. She will trash them; that's just part of having a pet rat.
  2. Rats' feet are very delicate and sensitive. If her cage has wire ramps or platforms, either replace them or cover them with fabric (yes, she will chew on that fabric) to protect her feet. The wire mesh will irritate her delicate little feet and she can get a nasty infection called Bumblefoot that is very painful and difficult to cure.
  3. Rats aren't just omnivorous, they are the definite article of an omnivore! I like to say of rats: "Anything you can eat, we can eat better! We can eat anything better than you!" That said, they need a balanced diet. The Oxbow brand rat food is the absolute best packaged rat food available. For a rat as young as your girl, I recommend starting with their "mouse and young rat" diet and then switching her to the adult formula after a month or so. But! Supplement her diet with other foods: seeds, nuts, vegetables (but I recommend avoiding nightshades like tomatoes and bell pepers; there's been some research that suggests they may not be very good for a rat's long-term health if they eat too much of them), yogurt (it makes a great treat for training, too!), meat, and, sparingly, sweets can also be given. While your baby girl is growing, letting her eat all she wants is best. But most rats tend to start to become... ahem... round if allowed to eat all they want once they're done growing. There's a lot of differing advice on how to limit a rat's food intake to keep them from getting too plump, and I recommend you try different methods until you find one that works for your girl.
  4. Rats have very delicate respiratory systems. Respiratory infections are the single most common health problem in rats, and especially since your girl came from a feeder bin from a pet store and you don't know what conditions she was kept in before the pet store got her and from them to you, it's something you should be on the lookout for. Excessive sneezing, wheezing, a red discharge from her nose, mouth, or eyes, and lethargy are all symptoms of a respiratory infection. You can take her to a veterinarian who can get her antibiotics that will clear it up, but be warned that once a rat gets an infection their risk of later infection is forever raised. Keeping her cage clean is the #1 way to prevent this, however! Also, keeping her in a true cage and not an aquarium will help too as she will get more air movement. Some pet stores sell aquariums as "rat habitats" with a mesh lid but they really aren't ideal unfortunately.
  5. She will pee on everything you let her touch, including you. While some rats are more apt to whizz all over you than others, all rats will leave periodic drops of urine as they go about their business as a scent marking method. It's also a rat's way of "claiming" a person, sort of like a cat rubbing against you (except it's pee instead of soft fluff).
  6. Girl rats generally tend to be very energetic and bouncy, especially when young. Keep a close eye on her and don't let her out of your sight or she will get up to mischief. This applies for boys, too, but girls happen to be the more energetic of the two sexes.
  7. Rats are pocket-puppies! Your girl might be a little skittish at first because she's new to you and didn't come from the best circumstances to start with. But if you're patient, kind, and speak with a gentle tone to her, in time she will become your own little pocket-puppy who will rush to the front of the cage to greet you (and ask for snacks) each day!

I could go on but I don't want to overwhelm you too much. If you have more questions or would like to chat with people, I recommend you check out r/RATS as it's a more active subreddit than this one.

Welcome to the wonderful world of rats!

These babies are 7 weeks old today! (Not their cage in first pic, this is what I brought them home in)

The greyish/tan one has some freckle spots on his back and is much more brave and has already started climbing all over me. The black one has a small splotch on his back and is a little skittish but trying his best to be brave and follows his brother. He seems to be the dominant one and initiates play fights a lot.

They will be integrating with their older brother named Gollum after Gollum is neutered.

HELP NEEDED πŸ€πŸ˜© First Night Did Not Go As Planned

I made another post about my cage setup before getting my 2 GIRLS, and someone made a comment about the bar width, but I was like its okay were gonna make modifications. BUT we were planning on making the modifications AFTER they came home.... completely forgot we were originally planning on getting adult boys, but we have wound up with around 6 month old GIRLS. Tina immediately slipped through the cage lmao. So it was kind of a disaster as I held Tina while my partner put the hardware cloth on. We made it through the night, though we both woke up frequently, I kept waking up terrified she had gotten out.

Anyways, our biggest issue (?) now is that we may have given the girls too much bedding too soon. We did the cement mixing bin method, and filled her up fully. Louise immediately borrowed, and once Tina was contained, she helped Louise with making entrances and hung out with her but comes out every so often and just chills and explores. Louise has come out maybe 3 times that we know of.

Im just wondering how this is going to effect our bonding. We specifically chose not to over crowd the cage to prevent them hiding and being difficult to get out while we practiced handling and bonded... now that they have created tunnels in their bedding, I definitely would not want to destroy them to get them out. :( Should we just give them a few days of zero handling? We are wanting to do the patience method for a few days before doing the confidence method. But im wondering if I should do patience for longer because of how crazy the first night went for Tina and because of how much Louise wants to hide. At the same time, I wonder if doing nothing and waiting will just do nothing? I just want to do whatever will benefit them and our relationship. I want them to know its safe to explore and rest absolutely anywhere. They seem to have eaten their pellets overnight, so I am happy about that. Tina also drank lots of water.

Louise: cream

Tina: Grey

HELP NEEDED πŸ€πŸ˜© Bottle or bawl?

Hi, so is a bottle or a bowl better when it comes to water. Currently, I have 2 bottles in with them but I feel like every time I turn around, I have to refill it. whenever I ask my roommate, she said the same thing that she's constantly refilling it. I know it does leak a little bit, but I don't feel like it leaks enough for it to warrant being gone that fast. I just want to make sure they are getting enough water. What can I do?

HELP NEEDED πŸ€πŸ˜© Help needed

Hey guys, I’ve been thinking about adopting a few rats in a few months and needed help with the cage. Any cages I find that are marketed for rats/rabbits/mice are all really small and not tall and any on my Amazon are all over 400€. I was wondering if a parrot cage would be acceptable as they’re big and tall and a more comfortable price. Would they be okay? Especially that I can add floors and obviously many climbing things and toys? Thank you for your help 😊

Editing to clarify:

Im getting my 1st pair of girl rats soon, definitely going to be adding more girls to the mix once were settled, and we have the top cage attachment just waiting on adding more cage space to not overwhelm them because theyre going to be nervous. Super excited, definitely need to see how rats actually maneuver and climb in order to configure the accessories optimally, so please don't make fun if some of the placement doesnt make sense lol. plus we're going to be buying many more things- we're gonna be CROWDING this thing so worry not about the low accessory amount!! Let me know what you think, and if theres any must haves I can't forget while im shopping!

Is my daughter’s rat pregnant?

I adopted two female rats for my daughter, We adopted them on the 29th of September, the past few days though one of the girls has gotten really cranky and actually bit my daughter to the point she drew blood, she is actually one of the sweetest girls so I was so surprised I almost didn’t not believe my daughter, I then tested it myself and sure enough she is cranky, I’ve also noticed she seems a bit more hungry and active, this is our first time owning rats so I’m not sure what I’m looking for and I also had no intention of babies… They were adopted out of a petstore that had poor conditions each cage had at least 30 rats we ended up adopting the two girls he assured us they have never been with a male. Tbh I thought she was just fat but with the recent behavior in just her I’m wondering if it could be something more & don’t mind the pictures with her recent behavior I’m honestly a bit scared to handle her so I took the best pictures I could without disturbing her to much … thank you in advance for any advice or opinions! Again please be respectful we adopted them out of a bad situation and this is our first time owning them.

HELP NEEDED πŸ€πŸ˜© My rats forgot each other after a few hours.

I had to separate one rat for a few hours (about 8–10), and now one rat is hissing at him and taking up an attacking stance sideways. And the second rat (with which they were close) even bit him a little on the shoulder because they couldn’t share the food, even though he used to be completely passive and didn’t have any food‑related conflicts with him before. Please help. What should I do now? I’m afraid that the longer he’s in isolation, the more they’ll forget about him.
