Troubleshooting SD Card burnt up, fault of the card or the raspberry pi board?

Hey guys, so my niece was playing the raspberry pi while I was away and she said she smelled something burning. They shut the system off, and upon closer inspection it looks like the sd card has a burn spot on it.

Is there any way to know if this was a faulty sd card, and I can just replace it? Or could it be the raspberry pi itself and it will just burn up the next card I put in there.

Also, is there any chance I can save the data off this card? Going through the process of setting everything up again will be a bit of a headache that I don’t really have the time for. When I get back to my computer I’m gonna check to see if I made a backup, but I can’t remember at the moment.

Thank you!

Troubleshooting Firmware Upgrade from 2020-03-19 to 2026-01-09

How risky is that upgrade? 6 Years of firmware upgrades sound like a lot:

https://github.com/raspberrypi/rpi-eeprom/blob/master/firmware-2711/release-notes.md

Is this "safe" or shouldnt I risk it right in front of my vacation?

(i am not sure if this flair fits)

Troubleshooting weird blob on Raspberry Pi RAM chip.. anyone seen this before?

Just noticed this weird raised blob on the RAM chip of my Raspberry Pi 4. Looks like a tiny melted plastic/resin drop or some kind of blister. No idea how long it’s been there.

Pi still works perfectly fine though. Boots, runs stable, no crashes, no overheating. It sometimes runs 24/7 for projects, but temps look normal.

Anyone seen this before? Harmless weirdness or should I be worried?

Troubleshooting Raspberry Pi outdoors in freezing temperatures — how should I protect it?

Hi everyone,

I know this might sound a bit unusual, but I need to keep a Raspberry Pi 4 running outdoors, where winter temperatures can drop to around -8°C (17.6°F).

The Pi will be inside a plastic IP55 enclosure, approximately 240 × 80 × 40 mm. It has a metal heatsink case.

At the moment, with an ambient temperature of around 15°C, the Raspberry Pi stays at about 30.5°C while idle, so it generates a decent amount of heat. If necessary, I can also run a process that increases the CPU load and therefore the temperature.

My main concern isn't really the cold itself, but condensation and humidity, especially when the enclosure cools down.

The Raspberry Pi will be powered on and online continuously, except in the event of power outages, which are very short and rare where I live.

So far, I have done the following:

  • sealed the enclosure as much as possible;
  • applied silicone around the screw holes and cable glands used to bring the cables inside;
  • placed silica gel inside the enclosure;
  • installed a temperature and humidity sensor inside the enclosure to monitor the conditions.

Do you think what I've done is sufficient, or is there anything else I should do to prevent condensation and corrosion in the long term?

As I mentioned, I know this probably isn't the ideal setup, but unfortunately I don't have any other option than keeping the Pi outdoors.

Thanks!

Troubleshooting soldered headers onto my raspberry pi pico w and it doesn't turn on

I didn't test it before soldering so it could've always been broken. I plugged it into my laptop with two different cables that I know transfer data. The indicator light didn't turn on nor when I held bootsel did it show up as a drive. This was my first attempt at soldering so there's a good chance I messed something up.

Troubleshooting Leaving a pi on overnight and all day

Would it be fine to leave a raspberry pi 3B+ on practically 24/7. It will just be on overnight and when I’m home during the day. It’s just running pi-hole but it’s the gui os version.

so pretty much im attmepting to breadboard a rasberry pi and somehow got the case stuck in the actual pi it'self and now i can't get it out. ive tried to gently nudge it out but it's stuck in there pretty good. was trying to put on a case and only to find out that the breadboarding process needs the rasberry pi to be caseless. i feel like a damn idiot. mind you im new to eletronics and still learning.

Troubleshooting Is my soldering sufficient?

New to rpi here - I’m working on connecting an e-ink display and having significant trouble with it. Multiple rounds with the display documentation as well as chat gpt has me wondering if the problem is with my soldering, which I’ve never done before.

I watched a quick video to put the above together. I don’t need it to be perfect, I just need it to work. Does it look like my soldering might be a problem?

Have I researched? I cannot tell you how many times I've tried finding the fix for this problem, or how to choose a specific kernel.

Am I doing something wrong? Probably.

Troubleshooting Raspberry Pi 4 Kit Help

I purchased a Raspberry Pi kit and I have it working and it's the coolest thing ever.

I have run into two issues, which I don't know if they are related. I have no clue and genuinely want to learn what to do.

1) First issue is that the fan will not work from the kit. I have tried EVERY troubleshooting to no avail. I have sent in an email to see if I can get a replacement fan.

When I first got everything together and powered it up the fan turned of for a split second and hasn't turned on since.

The heat syncs are on the parts they are designated to. Thankfully is very cool at night so I have it in the window with a cool breeze to keep the processor cool.

2) Second issue is that when trying to update I get the following message:

"error installing packages - error while installing package: installed raspi-firmware package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status"

I will attach photos. Please let me know if you can help. I love this little thing!

Troubleshooting 3.5" LCD white screen issue

Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W + 3.5" SPI LCD (ILI9486/XPT2046) showing white screen for over a year. Running out of ideas.

I've been troubleshooting a 3.5" 480x320 SPI LCD on a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W for about a year and would appreciate any ideas.

Display:

- 3.5" Raspberry Pi display

- 480x320 resolution

- XPT2046 touch controller

- ILI9486 framebuffer detected by Linux

OS:

- Recalbox

What works:

- HDMI output works

- SSH works when the Pi boots

- Linux detects the display:

- "graphics fb1: fb_ili9486 frame buffer, 480x320"

- "/dev/fb0" and "/dev/fb1" exist

- Touch controller is detected

Problem:

- LCD usually shows a solid white screen

- Sometimes behavior changes depending on angle/pressure

- Pressing on the LCD can change brightness

- Wiggling the display can make the screen change state

- The display/header connection feels mechanically unstable

Other observations:

- The GPIO header soldering is not great and the black plastic spacer on the header was damaged when I first assembled it.

- Recalbox sometimes seems unhappy when HDMI is disconnected.

- I've tried multiple overlays including:

- waveshare35a

- waveshare35b

- waveshare35b-v2

- waveshare35c

Question:

Given that the kernel is detecting the ILI9486 and creating "/dev/fb1", does this sound like a hardware connection issue (GPIO header/soldering/display connector), or is there something else I should investigate before completely redoing the header?

I can provide photos of the Pi, soldering, LCD board, and boot logs if needed.

Troubleshooting Can’t fit pi into case

Hey everyone I just got the HighPi Pro 5S Case for Raspberry Pi 5 but it won’t fit. I think it might be due to the threads that stick out past the fan push pins as you can see in the diagram. Does anyone know if so can fit this setup?

Thanks

Update: I had to flip the standoff around so that I could put the screws in from the bottom. I guess I’m a little dumb for that but I appreciate everyone’s help!

Troubleshooting My Pi Zero 2W doesn't connect to the WiFi. Help!

I'm going for a headless setup. The following are the steps I've taken so far:

  1. Flashed a brand new 64 GB SD card with Raspberry Pi OS Lite (32-bit)
  2. Inserted it into the pi
  3. Powered it with my laptop's USB port as well as a 5V/2A adapter and waited until the green LED stays on constantly (It sometimes stays on and randomly blinks as if power is an issue (which isn't), but after 3-4 mins, it stays on)
  4. Installed Fing network scanner and scanned for the devices where the pi didn't show up (Screenshot attached); I can't log into my wifi router's official page as my brother reset the pass and forgot it 🤡
  5. Reflashed and repeated.
  6. (EDIT) I've already customized the imager with details of my WiFi and also tried putting in the details manually via a wpa_supplicant.conf file and an empty extension-less ssh file in the boot directory of SD card AFTER flashing. Still no help.
  7. (EDIT) I'm connecting to a 2.4ghz network only.

I'm new to all this but open to learning, so any advice is welcome, thank you!

Troubleshooting USB C came off of a 4B board. Judging by those leads on the right there's no way a replacement is going to touch all the contacts. Is there any reliable way of powering the Pi without the USB C port? After this the micro USB cable broke from the power cord and was stuck in the Zero Pi. What a day.

Troubleshooting cyberdeck with pi 3 a+

hey i need help. i desperately want to make a cyberdeck with retropie as my operating system. i got a pi 3a+ and a touch display 2. i couldn’t get my raspberry pi to turn on the touch display 2 even while fixing the config.text like many say to do online. i tried to get it to connect via hdmi to my tv and that didnt work either even after i added lines to the config.text (after re-flashing the sd card with retropie). i have a 4gb sd card for now and a usb wireless keyboard. should i just try with regular pi os? i dont know what to do to get it to connect to a display. i could also return the 3 a+ and get model b+ instead. let me know.

Troubleshooting Cockpit on Raspberry Pi OS arm64 – Repository / Package Issue

Have an RPi running Raspberry Pi OS / Debian Bullseye with an arm64 architecture.

Wanted to install cockpit which was not available from the configured RPi repos as an installable native arm64 package, so, I had the Debian Bullseye arm64 archive temporarily added in order to install Cockpit.

This leads to a "Repository Mixing" which kind of feels wrong

Adding the Debian arm64 repository allowed Cockpit to be installed, but created a mixed package environment, potentially problematic because some Debian packages can be selected/installed. (even prio an pinning cannot not fully handle it)

Apache got broken, due to an unsatisfied dependency because the Debian apache2 package requires an exactly matching apache2-data version. Luckily I was able to recover Apache from the debian repos now, but again... this feels wrong.

My Current Repository Strategy is to enable the Debian repos only temporarily when a package
related to Cockpit requires it.

-----------------------------------------------

My main issue is therefore:

I want to have Cockpit on my Rpi, but the packages are apparently not available from the standard Raspberry Pi repositories for the native arm64 installation, so I was forced (?) to obtain it from Debian leading to the mix repositories.

A native, Raspberry Pi OS-compatible arm64 Cockpit package/repository would avoid the need for this repository mixing. - Is there one?

I also wonder:

- How do others run/install cockpit on RPi?

- Is there really no native method to install cockpit in the RPi?

- has anyone installed cockpit on the most recent (Trixie) Raspi OS?

I must be missing something...

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in adcance.

EDIT: Thanks for all the feedback. I will plan on reinstalling the little one. Is about time.

Lesson learned: "Never touch a running system", unless you want to find out it's time for an upgrade.

Troubleshooting How to turn off initial boot firmware check of all the gpios?

Hey folks, I have a board built on top of the rpi5, and I am using the gpio pins for the i2c bus communication and power supply.
There is a supply from the csi port as well.

My observation has been while the rpi boots up, all the gpio pins are set to high once and then again at low.
This initial check is causing issue with my ICs which are attached to the gpio, this also snatches away the control from my driver code.

Is there any way to disable this initial boot level check for the gpio pins? Where can i look up more about this?
Any help would be much appreciated, it has taken awhile to arrive at this observation after alot of debugging.
Thank you.

Like I said, absolute newb here! Recently bought a raspberry pi 3 model a+ and a pibow case to go on it.

Thing is, this little thing is stopping it from fitting properly, and all the photos of the Pi3 I can find show 2 little capacitors in its place, instead of the R47 thing? Have I bought a fake? Or is something else going on!

Troubleshooting BeeWriteBack Keyboard mapping

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hopefully this is an okay sub for this question. I followed this project for something called Bee Write Back. It's a little handheld terminal that is powered off a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W. Above is a picture of the keyboard that I put together during the project. I use a Dvorak keyboard (so I apologize if this monstrosity of a keyboard triggers anyone :P) as seen in the image. I used the default US dvorak keyboard layout when setting up raspberry pi OS and it actually did a great job with the defaults but there are a few things I'd like to remap. All the letter keys are perfect. The space, shift, backspace, enter and ESC key all seem to be fine. The rest are a little off. The CTRL is actually Caps lock, ALT is CTRL, LWIN is DEL, haven't figured out what the actual delete is and the direction keys are off. Instead of LDUR like in the picture it's ULDR.

A lot of these I can fix by moving the keys around but I had three questions.

1.) is there an easy way to test the keys where I can push it and see what is actually being detected? the letters were easy with a simple text editor but some of the ctrl/alt/fn/win keys aren't as easy to see

2.) once I know what keys are doing what, is it easy to manually remap them to what I want them to do instead? I'm okay with not doing LDUR like in the picture and doing a more Rogue-like layout like LUDR but the ULDR seems awkward.

3.) the most obvious thing is that i'm missing all the numbers. This is probably the biggest one but is there a way where I can use (once I find them) a ctrl/alt/fn/win key to turn the top row into numbers?

This has been a fun project so far so I'm thankful for anyone/everyone who can help me get to my goal. Thanks!
