Is it possible the Microsoft somehow ends up dead as a result of this? Like the "Microslop" era actually kicks off their real decline into irrelevance years down the line?

u/HeadacheBird 21h ago
The problem at this stage is corporate use is still so completely dependent on windows. The personal user doesn't matter as much.
Moving to Linux in a corporate environment is much harder, when businesses will just live with any AI additions

Exactly, we might still have 20 or so years if not more until maybe some companies begin to move towards the penguin.

I am doubtful that any large business will pivot to using Linux outside of IT and Software Engineering. Microsoft has done a very good job of making the windows platform secure, easy to use, retaining familiar UX components for decades, and maintaining legacy software.
Windows also does not play nicely with many standards that Unix or Linux operating systems use, intentionally. Microsoft makes it difficult to make these operating systems talk to each other, ensuring that you use their product over competitors. Things like file permissions, user groups, and file systems are notoriously a pain in the ass to maintain across systems.
There are solutions to each of the problems introduced by switching operating systems, but most of the time its cheapest and easiest to just use the operating system the computer ships with or pay Microsoft the extra $100 for a license. At the end of the day, the best choice of operating system for an organization is the one their employees understand and can use effectively.
This is by no means an endorsement of microsoft or their shitty operating system.

Microsoft has done a very good job of making the windows platform secure
Microslop doesn't know the meaning of the word secure. Never have.
They regularly ignore security researchers, and build atrocious things that never should've existed.
To be very clear, the reason Nightmare Eclipse posted these vulnerabilities publicly is because he tried to report them to Microslop, and they repeatedly ignored him, and then banned him. So he said "fuck it" and posted them publicly to force their hand into fixing the problems. They then threatened to sue and/or prosecute him, because they're a bunch of little bitches who don't understand or give a shit about security. Some of these exploits were already being leveraged by hacker groups as well.
I'm not sure how well you understand the specifics of this article, but it's bad. Like really, really, really fucking bad. They're lucky this was found by a white hat hacker, because it could've been the largest security breach in history.
Anybody competent in security should have legit zero respect for that company at this point.

Either redhat or some similar enterprise distro would have to come out and actually have the backing to create a real support system for it.

So many employees are just stuck on a browser for most of their day anyway. I'm sure most employees wouldn't notice if you switch them out to Linux with a Windows look alike skin.
The real problem is that the IT department needs to upgrade all the processes for managing Linux desktops.

u/Wipfmetz 20h ago
Like in the near future? No, business relies on MS, and that's slow moving. MS is today where IBM was in the 80s.
But mid and distant future? Sure, business can and will likely move on. IBM was in in the 80s where MS is today.
37
u/Lashay_Sombra 18h ago
No chance of Microsoft being dead in our lifetime
Most people don't realise the dominance of MS in business plus the ecosystem of software built around that (both by MS and other companies) pretty much guarantees Microsoft survival no matter how much they screw up
And despite all the news articles and predictions by fan boys (30+ years worth), Linux is not going to replace MS any time soon
15
u/BrokenPickle7 17h ago
As a Linux loving system administrator for a large corporation you are right. Windows server and backend isn't going anywhere. I wish it would disappear, half of my job is fixing shit with the servers that wouldn't be a problem on Linux.

I can't even count how many times windows updates corrupted the config files for a third party software that we use.
I have to deal with this shit daily recently since the workstations go on rotation on when windows fucks it all up again. They don't update around the same time since some of them had to get paused updates at differnt times because updates corrupted printer drivers, which was fun trying to wrap my head around why the drivers aren't working after a set time after reinstalling, or even resetting the pc.
1
u/Mario583a 6h ago
Is it actually fixing shit with the servers or incompetent IT staff?
4
u/BrokenPickle7 6h ago
A bit of both but not so much with the servers, we only let a small handful of people that have access to all servers. What breaks most is usually compatibility with older software or updates that decide to go sideways.

MS has massive amounts of money they can burn for a long time, as long as they keep shareholders happy with the latest buzzwords. They are also very ingrained in the business world, and that won't be ending anytime soon. Although an increasing number of foreign governments, and to a lesser extent businesses, are setting goals of reducing or eliminating dependence on American tech companies. For example, the French government is working on building their own Linux distro for government systems.

Much of and potentially all of Europe is scooting toward Linux.
China? I don't believe that they use Windows either.
There could be a point in time, where Microslop, only has a portion of the United States market, maybe some South American nations and a handful of other very tiny markets around the world.
It could happen over the course of the next five to ten years.

I vaguely remember the state of bavaria very recently had a thing where they wanted a new software solution for something and instead of actually putting it out there and getting offers or whatever, they just tailored the whole thing so that only microsoft could actually fulfill what they were asking
I mean it is the dumbest state in our failing country of corrupt morons, this isn’t the only place where politics is committed to fucking us over by choosing the worst option because they get the greatest kickbacks, but it’s very symbolic on where we’re going over here (headon into a wall, debating on who gets their turn at trying to remove the steering wheel)

No. Microsoft isn't windows. Even without windows it's cloud business would be enormous (although not the largest by any means) it prints money and has a very healthy revenue pipeline.
Windows might drop it's market share over the years and decades but truth be told, it's not the best way to make money these days anyway

maybe not very likely but it definitely can happen. Some EU countries already started migrating their administration's software to Linux and I recently heard the same about China with their own linux distro. And I imagine if the government adopt it, corporate will follow soon.

As long as corporate America (and other countries) exist, they are keeping MS alive mostly since they’re kinda stuck in their ecosystem. Personal use and PC gamers will flock away from MS though in decent numbers in the coming years once SteamOS gets more adapted and grows better, like for me once it gets Nvidia support, I’m fine fully ditching Windows to go on SteamOS and use my MacBook for daily stuff. I work in IT and I personally think MS is too far gone on their plot, Windows for personal use is just in a shit state as 11 is just bloatware with AI and other garbage slowing down performance and they’ll keep corporate users suffering with their expensive subscription models because they know it’s too expensive and time consuming for companies to merge away from the MS ecosystem. I even tell friends and family members if they’re looking for a new computer to give macOS a try if they’re fine learning a new OS for a bit, they’ll be better off hardware reliability wise and dealing with a less shitty OS.

My partner was moaning recently about no knowing how to fix our sons Linux desktop, its Debian with KDE.
In this case his microphone wasn't working on Firefox tutoring session.
I pointed her at the speaker widget in the corner, listing active devices in one tab and applications in anouther.
In doing that she saw he had muted his microphone for Firefox.
Then I showed her System setting where every possible setting lives and it has a search bar if you put 'sound' in filters all the options to every setting relating to 'sound'.
Here a big sidebar option of 'Sound Devices' showed us a much more comprehensive listing of that information, along with theme controls on seperate sidebar options.
Putting 'microphone' filtered the Sound devices tab to only microphone entries and removed the other sidebar options.
Every setting has been rewritten to appear in system settings, using the same UI toolkit, with the same level of labelling.
Last time I used Windows you could still find Windows XP setting menus behind Windows 8 Metro from Windows 11 theming and there is no comparible screen.
If you open the start menu (kickoff) or Krunner tools and put in 'control panel', System settings is the only option returned, same with 'system preferences' and 'control centre'.
Linux is only hard because people decide it is and don't try.
Windows 10 to 11 is a far bigger shift and more complicated than 10 to KDE 6.x

No ads, no bloat, no telemetry, basically no viruses, faster, less space use, more stable, free, customizable, lets the user be in control.
Downsides are mainly software compatibility but thats either solved with open source alternatives, web based software or emulation like wine. Gaming has been pretty much solved with steam proton.

Just need reengineering of Windows Calls, so that ANY Windows App will seamlessly and flawlessly operate on Linux.
FAR better than the best branches of WINE currently allow.
2
u/the_bananalord 12h ago
"just" is doing some tremendously heavy lifting in this sentence
2
u/Strange-Scarcity 12h ago
WINE is already a pretty good re-engineering of many Windows libraries, and calls. It's gotten better and better in recent years too.
It would be great to have the entire Windows "secrets" broken and sussed out so that any Windows application can JUST be installed by clicking on the executable and there's no problem or even minor work needed to be done to configure anything for the application to "just work".
2
u/the_bananalord 12h ago
A problem so simple and legally straightforward that we've been solving it for 30 years
1
u/Strange-Scarcity 12h ago
Not perfectly.

Which distros are you guys using?
18
u/afiefh 21h ago
Been on Linux since mid 2000s (Windows Vista). Here's the reality: grab any big distro like Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint, Arch...etc and you'll be happy. For someone new to Linux it's much more important to figure out which Desktop environment (gnome, KDE plasma, cosmic...etc) works best for you than to quibble over the minute differences between distros.
Once you're comfortable with Linux and know what the different pieces are, and which pieces don't work for you, that's the time to go crazy and figure out if you want an immutable distro, or a different package manager, or rolling release/stable...
Don't let picking the perfect distro prevent you from the obvious improvement. Just grab one you like, dual boot it, and see what works.
4
u/the_web_dev 16h ago
It's dishonest telling a non-technical user they'll be happy on linux without also saying they may have to be comfortable with a level of debugging that doesn't happen on windows.
Especially if they're running older hardware, or doing anything like mods over proton etc.
1
u/stuzor66 13h ago
Usually the issues come with newer hardware where the drivers and patches haven't been added to the main kernel. Older hardware (unless so old it's been dropped) is usually well supported.
1
u/the_web_dev 12h ago
Even you had to add the word "Usually" because you know all kinds of weird shit can happen at the same time.
Two things can be true at the same time. We can praise linux and OSS developers for the amazing and selfless work they do, and we can point out that there are issues that cause even average users to drop into the command line, or look for help on forums, that they would not have had to do on Windows.
Its exactly this "never criticize linux and market it as a drop-in windows replacement" attitude that prevents a large number of issues to go under validated to the ultimate detriment of the platform.
1
u/stuzor66 12h ago
I don't speak in absolutes as a general rule of thumb. I was just correcting your statement about older hardware.
Not sure this comment is geared towards me but you sure do seem triggered. Run whatever OS you want. I mean it's a choice of operating system after all. There is much more important things in the world to be getting mad over than this.

I use Mint with Cinnamon as my daily driver, and is the distro I would recommend to any Nvidia user with a pre-Turing GPU (e.g. GTX 1080 or earlier, Quadro P-series or earlier) as using those GPUs with any Arch distro is a nightmare these days.

If none of your games have anti cheats, Bazzite is excellent with my Nvidia cards (3060 12go and 2 old laptops with 1050 and 1080). I replaced windows with Bazzite on my laptops and dualboot Bazzite and W11 on my main computer. Steam games work out of the box, dvd games or pirated ones need to be installed with Lutris which is finicky but doable.

u/PsyTripper i7 14700K | ROG RTX4080 OC | 64GB DDR5 6400Mhz 20h ago
- If you don't use anticheat
- How is it running the new cards? 5080
- dual boot
- I don't pirate, but there is more out there than Steam (I specified this in my post).
- Install with Lutris, Finicky but doable.
That is not what I call hassle free. Because on windows, I press install and then play the game. And until there is a linux that is exactly that, I will be on W10 and probably W11 when forced.
I only use my PC for gaming.I also really don't understand Dual Boot, You still use W11... Just less...
3
u/CatatonicMan CachyOS 16h ago
For various reasons, some programs just don't work on Linux even with Wine/Proton. Thus, a dual-boot Windows partition might be necessary specifically to run those programs.
For new Linux users, there's also the peace of mind knowing that ye olde comfortable Windows install is just a reboot away.
1
u/aeline136 20h ago
For the newer cards I'm not really sure but when you download Bazzite you have to select which card you have so I assume they are supported as well.
For the dual boot it's only interesting if you have one or two programs that really need windows but you don't use often.
I use Bazzite a lot because there are a lot of tools and small apps that are super easy to install and have no annoying features (ads, bloat etc).

There are no alternatives available to corporate, which is the customer base Microsoft care about.
Microsoft doesn’t care if gamers use Windows (which they didn’t pay for) or not.
But if corps start switching to Linux or macos en masse it will light a fire under Microsoft’s ass.

I'm wondering: At this point AI should still be a heavy cost for Microsoft, whatever provider they use. It's one thing to sell AI capacity in its cloud offerings. That's selling shovels to opportunists that will generally almost all fail in their endeavours, yet Microsoft gets revenue now. It's another thing to cram it into anything in the Windows and (what I still call) Office experience, that users don't want and is sloppily integrated anyway. Sure, you pay extra for AI in Office (yet many don't know there's an alternative), and you can get a Copilot subscription for corporate use, so in my laymanny opinion Microsoft should focus entirely on the business (including code) side of things and sell optional subscriptions of well-integrated AI assistants for its tools that really help users and not force feed AI. Well, unless of course it somehow is all a data gathering, advertising and surveillance scheme somehow.

I then asked copilot how to access word online..followed the instructions. and yet ANOTHER copilot chat window opened. Even copilot seemed nonplussed by this!
In the end I manage to get word online running, but only bu using the copilot chat. something I never wanted in the first place.

Changed to Linux (Mint) this year because Microslop just can't get their shit together.
It hasn't been a perfectly smooth transition, but by God is updating stuff easy.
The update manager is so much nicer than the Microslop version, and you don't need to restart your PC every 5 minutes and watch the installing updates screen when (re)booting.

they'll never fix it as long as people stick to using it (while hoping that it'll get fixed).
just switch to linux already lol

Mint is great if you don't have the luxury of spending a ton of time up front on a huge learning curve. It works out of the box and can be set up so the GUI is very similar to Windows so your workflow isn't disrupted as much. That does mean that in order to do anything deeper than web browsing and office work, you do need to research that on your own time though. Fortunately, it's based on Ubuntu, which is one of the more beginner-friendly distros (but with some questionable proprietary elements so it's not usually recommended), so there's lots of support.

Switched 58 days ago and will not go back. Other than gaming, I just watch YouTube so, I can do that on anything.

How's the gaming going? This has been my main concern specifically. Also, what distro are you using?

I’m running CachyOS. Gaming has been pretty painless. Only game that I was running that gave me issues was The First Descendant but, was able to figure it out. I use the Cachy Proton and games have run well. I have a 5060 in my new build and loving it even though of course, my 3080 is better. Sucks not being able to run Warzone with my little brother and buddy but, whatever. Halo MCC runs campaign but, I always get kicked as soon as the game starts and have not found a fix. Just installed Halo Project Reclaimer and runs like a dream though so, I’ll get my fix there.

The event was about the new architecture for chips with unified memory. It's done for local agents. Idk why people had other expectations.

Microsoft don't give a fuck about what we ask tho. They can shove anything down our throats because they know pretty well we're doomed using their OS.

u/CASpider Linux 17h ago
You don't have to take what Microslop shovels at you. There is another path...

u/JesusDestroyedButt 16h ago
I dual boot Linux but can't leave Windows behind. And trust me, I'd love to.

Okay hands up who believes any of these public PR stage talks after decades of open miced up lies?

What they have done to the Office package in the last 24 months will be studied at Grad-level for decades.
Catastrophic destruction of a once useful set of tools that many industries rely on. Slap it all online, make it largely incompatible with SharePoint, bang AI slop all over it, and charge a inflate the monthly fee for the privilege. Tossers.

my mind keeps seeing anything related copilot or ai as handicapped, like having the crapilot key handicaps you from using word delete easily and other rctrl uses, having the copilot running handicaps your ram and cpu giving you less performance, and waste of internet with updates installing more slog

u/BubbleButtOdiyan 16h ago
Why not debloat and remap the key? I debloated 5 years ago and stuff still hasn't returned
2
u/Impossible_Aioli3693 16h ago
remapping with powertoys is bandaid on the artificial issue caused by the idiots at microslop

Lets get to 30% Linux. Microslop is the worst choice imo. I’ve been on mac and linux at home and it couldn’t be more pleasant.

At this point , I won't be surprised if we will be launching an desktop OS through a web browser on a android tablet come next year considering how fast we are getting this done by AI coding . ( GTA 5 on a web browser for instance )

I’m a tech writer by trade and watching this was absolutely painful. Usually with events like this I have to watch them to prepare for whatever product is coming down the pipeline and translate the speak into something that the normal person would understand.
That being said, this felt like Microsoft attempting to be Apple. They had a bunch of information front loaded that literally burned folks out so quickly that I watched viewership decline in real time by the thousands.
After around 20 minutes of nonsense there was the reveal of the Surface Laptop Ultra and that was all of ten minutes. Then a fireside chat with a bunch of the shovel salesman going on about how the product and tech is wonderful.
Who was this event even for in the first place? It’s a consumer focused item and then they tailored the entire presentation to the biggest tech grift of all time! Abysmal presentation.

You all are so cute and innocent. You really think that M$ simply not talking about LLMs means they're going to shove less LLMs in your face.

Using your infuence to project interest to try to eatablish an appetite to the broader audience. Repitition is enough to convince the simple minded that it's good.

I have never had a worse Windows experience than now. It's not just Windows either. It's other Microsoft software. Outlook has been wildly bad on many occasions to the point of literally not functioning. There have been several occasions where I had to go to Classic just to, you know, write an email because I actually couldn't do that for like a month on one release because the half screen for the new email was permanently minimized and could not be unminimized. Restarting the program, restarting the PC, didn't matter. That error last for weeks, literally couldn't perform half the function of a email program, lol.
I've used Outlook for 15 years. I have never seen such garbage come out of Microsoft before this last year. Holy hell, they're spewing out some real trash.

I feel the 90s through the end of the 2000s were the glory days to be working at Microsoft. Now, it would kind of suck since they are focused on nothing other than AI. I suppose pay and stock would be good.

They just can't help themselves. They invested so much in ai that they need to try to pave something with it. It's absurd.

"So we know AI hasn't been great for anyone and we know that the public objectively hates AI. But also that AI has made everyone's lives worse with increased hardware prices for PC, console, phones alike but also data centers makes peoples lives worse with severe noise, water usage and pollution but also increased power bills ( that Microsoft and other AI companies don't pay) But also we promised we'd do things to make our OS better. . .
Anyway AI will make your life better and - why are you booing? AI is good for you! Listen, turn on subtitles so you can hear us over the data center 3 towns over!
