Gear Question Yakima Skybox issues

Bought a second hand skybox 16 for $200 from some really great dude on OfferUp. The driver's side opens perfectly but the passenger side is dead and won't open. Vid shows the passengers side of the car

Any idea on a fix or what's wrong with it is appreciated

Also sorry if this isn't the place to post 😭

Had a similar problem with my yakima box. I had 2 issues. The key cylinder has a little bump on it that broke off and that is pretty easy to fix, Amazon has replacement cylinders. The other issue I had was there is a piece that attaches to the rail had a plastic piece that attached to a rail running down. I bought a replacement from ebay that replaced that part with metal. It was quite involved but got it working again.

As yours is spinning I'm guessing the plastic piece attached to the rail is broke

How did you get the latch mechanism to open?

I opened the working side, reached across and you can unscrew the latch (2 screws), you can then twist the rod running the length of the side or you can see if the little cam is still there where the handle was and push up on that to open that side

The part that is likely broken was identified by the commenter. It is essentially a tab that rotates the aluminum rod to release the upper half. If you can rotate with another tool (I used Knipex cobras) then you can remove the whole top and start going after the broken part. If I remember correctly, you will need a rivet gun as you’ll have to drill out some rivets to get the aluminum rod out and then it’s a single screw to remove the broken tab. $70-78 is criminal to charge for a 3D printed part though. I modeled and printed my own when this happened to me. PM me if you want it at cost of printing after confirming it’s the same part. I printed one in PC two years ago and it’s still going strong. I think the original is PA-GF. My original broke when it was sub freezing out.

Open the other side and check the mechanism from the inside.

The inside is an enclosed box that can only be removed when the side that needs to be fixed is open :/
