Anyone currently in Baja or there recently who can provide a current view from the ground? I was down a couple of years ago and have friends who were down about 3 weeks ago. Things are usually very chill. I am thinking about making a run.
I’m in Baja now and I’ve had zero issues. I will say that the beaches are far more empty than in prior years. It seems like a lot of people have decided against coming this year.
I keep my ear to the ground on Baja conditions because I'm planning a run later this year. The intel hasn't changed much: the biggest threat isn't the cartels, it's the cows on the highway at night.
As long as you follow the golden rule—park the rig before the sun goes down—you're good. That 100 Series is built for those washboards, so you'll be riding in comfort while everyone else is rattling their fillings out.
😂 yeah…I broke the spoiler a few months ago. I lost my balance on the rear bumper and grabbed the first thing I could. Spoiler came right off in my hand. 😂 In the pics tho it was actually strapped to the rear hatch so no weight on the spoiler. Thanks for the compliment. Land Cruisers have a great aesthetic!
You are going to have a great time! First pic is my palapa in Bahia de Los Angeles. That just reminded me that my first night down there I heard the couples next to me having sex. People were having a great time! 😂😂😂
You can pretty much camp anywhere. But I think there is value camping in designated spots or near other people…if you are alone. Basically a safety in numbers thing. I don’t think people would NECESSARILY target someone…like I’m not fearful. But there’s also no need to take unnecessary risks especially when some of the places you can access are very isolated
Do it! It’s a great experience! I learned very quickly that the people tend to be friendly and are welcoming of visitors and travelers. And the landscape is absolutely beautiful! The guy in the palapa next to me put his fishing line in the water and 15 minutes later pulled out a big ass fish. The next day he was feeding me the best tasting ceviche I’ve ever had! He was down from Ensenada on vacation with his girlfriend. The people who live there really want you to (respectfully) enjoy yourself
Thanks for the info!! I’m definitely gonna make it happen. Anything you can tell me I need to know would be awesome. Fairly sure my 4R is up to the task what about gear or nuances?
Make sure you get the FMM, Mexican auto insurance and a copy of vehicle title. Taking a vehicle that is being financed (you are still making payments to the bank) requires more paperwork. Like permission from the lending institution. Check out Baja Bound online. I’ve not heard of anyone having an issue with this. Was talking to a friend last week who goes down frequently and laughing about how seemingly lax the Mexican border officials are. However, I do know someone who was denied entry to Guatemala because of this. I don’t think any extra or specific gear is required. Recovery gear is always good to have…straps and maybe boards. Pretty sure you are required to have the safety triangle things in the event you have a mechanical issue and are parked on the side of the road. Stay within your driving comfort zone. Don’t drive at night…animals on the road. I wouldn’t camp solo where there are no other people around. Generally speaking it’s safe but things can happen anywhere. Other than that I think your best travel companions are respect for the people and country, being aware of where you are and what’s going on around you (which I recommend regardless of which country you are in), and a positive disposition. Baja is an adventure tourist destination
Love Baja. I miss the yearly road trips and then weeks of dual sport riding and camping on deserted beaches as well as beautiful little towns with great coffee and a view. Sadly I’m not risking crossing the border - even with my Nexus card. One day I hope to return, though.
I noticed you don't show your license plate. Any tips on traveling with own vehicle in Mexico? Can we obtain temp tags before arrival so we can blend in?
If you're in Baja only it is super chill. tons of US and canadian plates, and european ones even. If you're going to the mainland remember to get Mexico specific car insurance. international plates are fine. I've driven through several times and had no issues, avoid driving at night and make sure to find secure parking. If you want to blend in just fly in and rent a car - but blending in is more than just about plates.
I’ll pretty much second this except want to add that you will need the Mexican insurance regardless of how far into Mexico you go…the insurance is a requirement. As is a document called the FMM. Also, a copy of your vehicle title or if your vehicle is being financed you are supposed to get a letter of permission from the lender. Check out Baja Bound online
…they have the information you need
