I work at a grocery store and I see it alot where I'm putting up new tags showing "was 11.99 now 9.99!" But the tag I'm replacing was 7.99. They literally lie about the prices going down to make people think they are getting a good deal

That's not even new. There have been news articles and studies done on pricing scams for at least a decade, especially in the fall/winter because of Black Friday and holiday shopping.

It's foul, but not enough people know or care (or are able to care) to do anything about it.

I used to do the price tags at Home Depot. They would raise the price of stuff for a certain amount of time so they could lower it and we could put a “New Lower Price!” Arrow on it. I saw the patterns over time and it was ridiculous.

Happens a lot on Amazon too with the Prime Day deals. Some are good but there are others where the MSRP goes up in order to show a fake sale.

Atleast now amazon has price history chart

And camelcamelcamel!

In EU now you have to display the lowest price in the past 30days to combat this!

Isn’t that illegal?

Who's going to stop them? The US Federal Trade Commission? I'm sure the check from the Waltons cleared before the election.

Yes. A local grocery store does that for barbecue holiday sales. I remember a few years back baby back ribs were about $2.99/$3.49/lb at normal groceries, not sale price. Come Memorial Day weekend, the other store would advertise “buy 1 get 2 free” (yes, like that) sales, which immediately raised my suspicions. Sure enough, their per package price was labeled at $9.99/lb. And not only that, they charge you for the heaviest one and the two lighter ones are the free ones, so unless you get three exactly the same weight, you’re also losing out money on that. Yet people were stocking up on these, anyway. One time I even found the label hadn’t been properly affixed so you could see the regular $2.99-$3.49/lb price under it! And they’re still pulling this stunt.

Black Friday in a nutshell

It’s a Roll UP now

u/nickolan 7d ago

Yep, just in time for another fake sale like Prime Days.

You basically have to check prices with a tool like PriceLasso or CamelCamelCamel to make sure prices actually dropped.

Do those work for non-American chains?

u/Accomplished_Emu_658 7d ago

The bottom price is probably right, but someone didn’t have the new top sign, and too lazy to remove old one in meantime.

Or its malicious compliance. Told to change bottom price so they did they were never given the sign for top and said oh well.

Our nuttela is currently $4.47 on rollback from $4.97. Looks like once again someone changed it for internet points.

You guys get Nutella peanut butter!

7

u/ClickIta 7d ago

My same reaction. But it seems it is an hybrid between standard Nutella and peanut butter, at is has cocoa as well. Sounds interesting.

u/revdon 7d ago

Sounds like Koogle!

4

u/makingkevinbacon 7d ago

Fr plus the regular stuff is like 8 bucks here I think

3

u/xoxoBug 7d ago

I just watched a documentary on ferrero rocher and they are changing a ton of recipes to “cater to the American palette.” It was pretty wild seeing how they’re buying up all these small companies, saying it was sort of playing the system.

Soon to be called the rollforward cost.

7

u/Maximum_Employer5580 7d ago

all those signs are are for psychology reasons - they know plenty of people will look at it and not think twice about buying it. The few of us that will look and call BS don't matter

5

u/rtkane 7d ago

Rollback to last Tuesday when it was a penny higher in price.

Walmart is filled with employees who took tests that asked them questions like:

If your boss told you to do something would you
A) tell them to fuck off
B) do what they say
C) ignore it for a while
D) find something else to do.

I’ve been in an unemployment shithole for a while so I am speaking from experience. They are not the brightest bunch.

13

u/Rhodin265 7d ago

The real answer is “It depends on what’s being asked”, but they’re probably looking for “B”.  Where’s my paycheck, Waltons?

3

u/Shapesizes 7d ago

TBF pretty much every job is either B, or C followed by B.

“Well, it WAS gonna be $4.97 but diesel prices went up. So this actually did reduce our profit margin. Thus, we are taking credit for saving you money.”

3

u/SignificantLeader 7d ago

Considering inflation it’s a roll back. Lol.

5

u/BrainWav 7d ago

They rolled back too hard and caused an underflow error.

3

u/Forward-Bank8412 7d ago

Now I have the Katamari theme song in my head!

3

u/natiusj 7d ago

If you roll back far enough it flips the odometer

3

u/roblewk 7d ago

It was about to go way up.

3

u/itsTurgid 7d ago

Rolling back to before the cut.

3

u/Livid_Tax_8078 7d ago

I literally have a rollback add right underneath this post

2

u/Kelef50 7d ago

I'm not an expert on pricing or marketing, but I think it must have something to do with the penny being eliminated. 😊

2

u/ProfligateVhorohiiv 7d ago

Because "fuck you", that's why. It's corporate policy to screw the customer.

2

u/iPicBadUsernames 7d ago

We have rollups now

2

u/Ill-Tea9411 7d ago

Those are the demand pricing rollbacks.

2

u/Starchaser_WoF 7d ago

It's still just $5 written in a fancy way

1

u/I-Stan-Alfred-J-Kwak 6d ago

Worse in Finland where we literally don't have an one cent coin unless we get it as change in some other country (not sure if they'd be accepted though), yet everything's still .99€

They might even round up when you pay on card, not sure.

2

u/Just-Try-2533 7d ago

Roll back to the future, Marty!

2

u/Hypothetical_Name 7d ago

Off sale, 1¢ on

1

u/JediMasterKenJen 7d ago

Most likely an error on the part of whomever put up the prices. That or it hasn't been changed over yet depending on the time of day it was taken (more likely if it was at night near closing)

Walmart Roll-Forward

1

u/TrontosaurusRex 7d ago

They rolled back the savings.

1

u/H6RR6RSH6W 7d ago

Dynamic pricing

1

u/Cjdj1985 7d ago

Bring back the old smile rollback man and then maybe shit will make sense

1

u/TanishqHooda 7d ago

Rolled Back To Original Expensive Price 😂

1

u/Natural_Hall9343 7d ago

Roll back to more profit for the company

1

u/CarefulCartoonist352 7d ago

they're not rolling back prices, they're just re-pricing everything higher

1

u/VideoGameControllers 7d ago

Not the first time. I have a picture from close to twenty years ago when they did that while I was working there.

1

u/Unlikely_Flower_138 7d ago

You have to wait for it to roll

1

u/Ja_Shi 7d ago

Least French breakfast.

1

u/kbum48733 6d ago

Our economy is stronger than ever!

1

u/Muted-Pay-9736 6d ago

yep it just be like that yk

1

u/I-Stan-Alfred-J-Kwak 6d ago

Just one cent?

1

u/Sammywanka 6d ago

It’s a small price to pay for more expensive gas

1

u/Life_Possibility_271 5d ago

Walmart used their own trucks. What’s the price of diesel?

1

u/GingerNumber3 5d ago

The ball is rolling UP!

1

u/Zerst__ 5d ago

Occam's razor is someone took them out and flipped the numbers from something like $4.29 to take a quick photo for internet points.

1

u/ECMxxUpToWnDC 4d ago

You're welcome

1

u/Baka619 3d ago

When I worked at Walmart my manager told me Rollback was a strategic marketing term that simply meant the price changed lol. Prices “Rollback” up and “Rollback” down. Horrible marketing practice.

1

u/wbknine 7d ago

Rolling back the rollback

u/RealOGTyrone 7d ago

Who did this? Kill them
