The letters are backwards, upside down, and/or front to back

Ngl but my brain was just torn in two directions at once looking at that as I immediately recognized the te but then thought I was dealing with Russian letters for one very long second as it did not compute. Wowzers, what a sign.

This post hurts my brain. The photo is of New Zealand and has Māori language.
This sub hurts my hope for humanity because it doesn't allow "foreign words".

it's about the letters being upside down/backwards, nothing about it being in Te Reo

Do they draw the latin alphabet differently over there? If they don't, this isn't a language thing

I think you meant Latin alphabet.
Just another thing for you to be confused over.
Are you from Ohio, or something?

I agree with OP, there are rules to how the letters are shaped in relation to each other as well as directionally left and right. Māori rendered in the Latin alphabet would follow those rules unless it explicitly defines different ones, like with Vietnamese and some accent marks. To my knowledge, it does not. Generally those rules are to reduce confusion and not entirely arbitrary.
So the letter A is mirrored horizontally and makes it look like the text is reversed, while the S is upside down, etc. If it was consistently reversed or upside down, it could be seen as a style choice, but it isn't.
I see this mistake in the hospital - USA :( - I work at, where the "S" in some signs are mounted upside down. It looks just right enough that it is not seen as something that needs to be fixed, but just wrong enough to drive many people - myself included - insane.

Thank god somebody in here is intelligent.
What the hell does this guy think the issue is and why are people upvoting them?

I can only assume it’s people going to the comments first and assuming, because that one had early upvotes, that this is a “foreign word looks like misspelled English” post, without bothering to check the image for themselves.
Having been on subs like r/tragedeigh, I do understand people being reflexively wary of posts containing foreign languages/names… but in this case it really doesn’t take more than half a second to spot what the real problem is

Thankfully it appears to have corrected itself by now, but it was a hell of a Reddit Moment to witness in real time.

If he is like me, he stopped "thinking" at first glance. My first conclusion was: another spelling mistake, because that is common. Then came: No that is a foreign word and OP just missed that. And only then it dawned on me that the typography is all fucked up.
He lost all my sympathy when he hurled an insult at you though. Asshole. I hate that redditor superiority complex. But I imagine that's why many people were upvoting him, they all stopped looking "too early" and jumped to the conclusion.

Are you stupid is basically what that means here, as backwards a place as Ohio is. It's a tiktok brain thing, that I had to look up before too. I've seen it around here and there.
