Self-Promotion My 10 hour Oblivion documentary is nearly ready!

1.4k Upvotes

Just an update on my Oblivion documentary. I've now finished all my interviews!*

(*Unless anyone I hadn't heard back from happens to get in touch over the new few weeks...)

Over the last few months I've been interviewing as many of the game developers that I could track down, to hear them in their own words talk about their individual contributions to the game, as well as sharing some memories/anecdotes, and reflecting on the legacy and success of Oblivion.

I've got roughly 10.5 hours of interview footage, almost all unedited - the only things I'll tend to remove are long pauses for thought, or if we happen to go too off topic.

So now, I'm adding in gameplay footage, to reference what people are talking about, as a visual aid.

Its still a bit too early for me to commit to a firm release date, but I'm hoping to have this finished by early July.

List of interviews:

  • Ken Rolston - Designer
  • Kurt Kuhlmann - Designer
  • Mark Nelson - Designer
  • Bruce Nesmith - Designer
  • Michael Kirkbride - Additional Writing
  • Noah Berry - World Art
  • Joel Burgess - Dungeon Art
  • Todd Broadwater - Additional World Art
  • Jonah Lobe - Character and Creature Art
  • Brendan Anthony - Programmer
  • Matthew Picioccio - Programmer
  • Chris Innanen - Programmer
  • Wes Johnson - Voice Actor
  • Craig Sechler -Voice Actor
  • Elisabeth Noone - Voice Actress
  • Linda Kenyon - Voice Actress
  • Catherine Flye - Voice Actress
  • Bonus interview: Noah Berry + Matthew Picioccio

Ofcourse, I'll be posting here and various other places once the video is live, which will be on my YT channel. Here's a link to my channel, and a video I made late last year on TES III Morrowind in the same kind of scope/scale: https://youtu.be/UdQmg-vJUGE

EDIT: Since posting this I've had one more person get back in touch with me and is up for a call aha!

Self-Promotion Thought I would post my reaction to the Remastered menu here!

As someone who only played Skyrim on a TV as big as my head I decided the first big game I’d play on my computer was Oblivion. Looking at the Oblivion remastered menu was breathtaking to say the least.. caught my reaction on stream and decided to post it as i’m currently streaming it (and really enjoying it!!) so if anyone is interested my twitch is @cartaleon !!

Self-Promotion An immersive HUD for Oblivion is finally here!

Have you been waiting for almost 10 years for a mod like Gopher's Immersive HUD - iHUD for Oblivion? Wait no longer. I can't fully enjoy Skyrim or New Vegas without iHUD, but unfortunately, Gopher never made a version for Oblivion. I searched all over the Nexus for something like it but nope, nothing. How could this gap be left? The people crave IMMERSION, so after a painstaking scripting process we finally have a solution. Immersive View. It basically works the same way iHUD does, albeit probably not put together quiet so well, as Oblivions scripting is extremely finicky, but its 100% functional and ready to add into your mod list!

Self-Promotion Ardenfall, an Elder Scrolls-inspired indie RPG, will support modding at launch!

Post image

Hey! I’m from the Ardenfall development team. It’s been a while since our last update.

Lately we’ve been working on modding support for Ardenfall. Modders will be able to create NPC conversations, quest logic, choices, and branching outcomes from day one of release later this year.

It’s already possible to create custom quests and dialogue. We’re also planning to support importing simple models and textures, which should open the door for custom items, weapons, and maybe some very cursed spells.

It’s still early, but for an Elder Scrolls-inspired RPG, modding felt like something we really wanted to support from the start.

Self-Promotion Ardenfall, an Elder Scrolls-inspired RPG, just hit 100,000 wishlists on Steam

Post image
452 Upvotes

Hi! Ardenfall devs here. This is our Elder Scrolls-like RPG, and we've been sharing updates here from time to time. We’ve just reached 100,000 wishlists on Steam, and we’re incredibly grateful for all the support!!

TES-like a niche kind of game, and a challenging one to make, which is why we’ve been working on it for so long.

Your feedback helped shape both the Steam demo and the current alpha version. Potions that let you move around in fun ways (levitation, speed, etc.), freedom to make your own choices, and multiple endings (including a very violent one) - we knew we had to showcase all of this in the demo because that’s what you guys asked for. Mod support is also one of the most requested features, and we’re planning to make modding tools available from day one.

Reaching 100,000 wishlists makes us feel an even greater sense of responsibility, and we hope we can live up to your expectations when Ardenfall launches in Early Access later this year.

Self-Promotion I’m interviewing as many of the game devs of Oblivion that I can, for one big “mega documentary”

Post image

My Oblivion “documentary” is on the homeward stretch. I’ve got 3 interviews this coming week, and waiting to schedule in one more interview and then I’m pretty much finished conducting interviews.

Earlier this week I interviewed Noah Berry, who was the “Lead World Environmental Artist” and we ended up recording 1.5 hours, and pretty much all of it is just talking about the landscape and nature of Cyrodil.

I’m currently at about 9.5 hours of interviews all in.

I’m hesitant to commit to an actual release yet, but I’m hoping for end of June / early July.

Self-Promotion Oblivion (2006) YouTube project.

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

Long ago, I had the idea of creating a character outside the main story of Oblivion while still being connected to the world of The Elder Scrolls. That idea eventually became Jeffrey the Guard.

At first, I thought making three or four videos would be easy, but I’ve now been working on this project for more than seven months. Lately, I’ve been feeling close to quitting, mainly because I haven’t reached my “target audience” yet, and it sometimes feels this project is more for me than for other people.

I made my first and only video on an old PC with no experience making this kind of content. I’ve been thinking about doing a 4K “remake,” but I’m worried that if people don’t like it, I’ll just go deeper into the spiral.

The idea is to use existing Oblivion characters to introduce Jeffrey, and later develop my own The Elder Scrolls stories and characters.

If you have seven or eight minutes and love this beautiful game, I’d really appreciate it if you could watch it and share your opinion. Any feedback would mean a lot to this frustrated Imperial Guard 🙃

I’d rather not drop links here, if you want to check it out, you can search @JeffreytheGuard on YouTube and it should pop up.

Thanks for reading and long live the Emperor!

Self-Promotion TESGuessr is now the Tamriel GeoGuessr game: Oblivion is here

TESGuessr, formerly known as the Morrowind GeoGuessr game, just got its biggest update yet.

Introducing: Cyrodiil. 23,000 panoramas covering every road, every city, and large parts of the wilderness of the Imperial heartland, just like you're navigating on Google Street View. From the Gold Coast, to the Jerall Mountains, every district of the Imperial City, all of Kvatch, and every other walled city in the beautiful province, fully mapped and fully walkable, street by street. Pick Morrowind or Oblivion from the home screen and be dropped into these wonderful worlds like never before. Play the regular gamemode, or take on Cyrodiil's ranked daily challenge: 5 spots, a minute each, no moving, once a day.

On top of all of that, the Wanted gamemode is on its way for Oblivion. Over a thousand named NPCs are being captured by our professional NPC photographer and it will be your job to name who they are. 5 daily NPC portraits, 3 attempts each. COMING SOON!!!!

All shots use original 2006 game's own world and textures, not the UE5 remaster.

And for those Morrowind fans who are starting to feel left out, don't worry: Cyrodiil is coming to your mode too.

Project Tamriel's Project Cyrodiil is now also an available option in the game settings menu. Nearly 2,800 brand new spots for you to discover all over the Gold Coast and Stirk.

There's so much for you to get lost in with this update; play for 5 minutes and I'm sure you'll become an Adoring Fan.

And if you do get bored, for whatever reason, then be sure to unwind in the Arena, where Morrowind NPCs duke it out 24/7 (unless the Arena is closed which can happen sometimes). They even have a very rare chance to fight in the Imperial City Arena, so be sure to check it out.

Play at https://tesguessr.com/#oblivion: free, no ads, no account.

You might be aware that I’m currently working on a “documentary” about Oblivion. I’m interviewing as many of the original game developers that I can track down, to hear them talk, in their own words, about their individual contributions to the game, share some memories and reflect on the legacy and success of the game.

I’m currently at about 8 hours of interview content, with two or three more interviews scheduled in. No eta yet, but hopefully by summer.

Enjoy these pics of Mark Nelson talking about painting THAT painting, and Craig Sechler, who was the voice actor for the Adoring Fan, and also sang this classic song.

One Adoring Fan is a gift... so for my Fallout for Hope charity stream (benefiting the Alzheimer's Association), I decided he needed a fan club. A boy band, maybe..?

So I put on a wig, made a makeshift torch out of construction paper and a flashlight, and turned my Oblivion Remastered playthrough into a wholesome, chaotic event.

It was SO much fun, and I had to share some of the photos with this community. 💛

Self-Promotion The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - An Oral History from the Game Developers

Thumbnail youtu.be
61 Upvotes

2026 marked the 20th anniversary of TES IV: Oblivion and I wanted to celebrat that by making this "documentary"

11 hours of interviews with as many of the game developers that I could track down. As with my 8 hours long Morrowind documentary from last year, its a chance for the devs to talk about their individual contributions to the game, share some memories/anecdotes and reflect on the success and legacy of Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls series.

As always, I've tried to make this as comprehensive and authetic as I possibly could. Its by no means a complete/exhaustive look at the game - many elements of the game aren't covered simply because th people responsible weren't available for interview. Hopefully one day we can hear their stories.

For now, this is the best I can do. Hopefully people will enjoy it and get something out of it. It was super fun to do, and a big thank you to everyone I interviewed for taking time out of their day to talk to me.

Self-Promotion I Created A 3D Interactive Oblivion Map, Including The Shivering Isles

With Oblivion Remastered and Skyblivion coming soon, I decided to throw together a 3D map.

The map is fully 3D, showing the terrain and low detail cities from the game. Includes camps, shrines, ruins, skill books, NPCs, Oblivion Gates, and more. If there are any important locations you feel like should be added, be sure to let me know!

Self-Promotion OBVR — native VR for the original Oblivion (2006). Looking for beta testers.

https://github.com/Naragorn/OBVR

This is not the Remastered edition and not a mod for it. It's an OBSE plugin for the original 2006 game that puts real VR into the game's rendering. The idea for now is: Oblivion stays Oblivion — no gameplay replacement, no reimagined combat. Same game, just in a headset.

Why 2006 and not Remastered? Well... It's just my fav game of all time and also... mods... beautiful mods that Remastered doesn't have.

OBVR has been developed and tested by exactly one person on exactly one headset. That's the reason for this post.

What works

- Real stereo 3D. The world is rendered twice per frame, once per eye. Not one image shown to both eyes (like Luke Ross mods). (If you like AER you can enable that though...)

- Hyper Stereo build in (similar to PrimaShocks 3D Boost mod but built in not modded and without the visual artifacts)

- 6DoF head tracking. Look around, lean, duck, stand up. The vanilla camera is multiplied by the HMD rotation rather than replaced.

- Native headset resolution and FOV. The game renders into eye-sized targets and the frustum is taken from the headset, so you don't get a 16:9 monitor image cropped into your face.

- HUD and menus in the headset, either on a cinema screen or floating in the world.

- Its own settings menu inside VR — ~50 settings, arrow keys, changes persist to the INI. No taking the headset off to edit a file. Not all settings work atm.

- Vertical look moved off the mouse onto your head, which is the single biggest comfort win.

- Gaze-based aiming. Arrows and spells go where you look, not where the mouse points, while your walking direction stays under mouse/gamepad control. The bow visually follows your gaze while you draw (Luke Ross style VR).

- Crosshair at the right depth, so it fuses into one instead of doubling.

- Dialogue zoom removed, persuasion minigame works, works with and without the 4GB patch, works under Mod Organizer 2.

What does NOT work YET — please read this before installing

- No motion controllers. No hand tracking. No room-scale movement. You play with mouse + keyboard or a gamepad, seated or standing in place. This is a "the game is in VR" mod, not a "reach out and grab things" mod YET. If that's what you want NOW, this isn't it FOR NOW. POSSIBLY LATER THOUGH.

- A known hang. Occasionally freezes the game. It has happened three times, it's not reproducible on demand, and the cause isn't found yet. Diagnostics are built in and this is one of the things I most want testers for.

- No D3D9 device-loss handling. Alt-tabbing or changing resolution may take the game down. Untested territory.

- Rare NPC glitches — an NPC snapping away during cutscene dialogue, and very rarely all NPCs collapsing into a pile. Cosmetic, rare, unfixed.

- SteamVR/OpenVR only. No OpenXR yet (Oblivion is 32-bit, which rules out most OpenXR runtimes).

- Windows only for now. Linux is the eventual goal.

- Tested on one headset (Pimax Dream Air) and one GPU (RTX 4090). Everything about how it behaves on anything else is genuinely unknown. That is the main thing I'm asking for.

Requirements

- The original Oblivion, 1.2.0.416 (Steam/GOG version, not Remastered)

- xOBSE 22.13

- DXVK

- SteamVR running

What I'm asking for

Mostly: does it start, and what does it look like on hardware that isn't mine? Specifically —

  1. Does it launch and reach the headset at all on your HMD?
  2. Is the scale right? Do people look human-sized?
  3. Comfort — anything that makes you queasy, and what you were doing at the time.
  4. If it hangs or crashes, OBVR.log and OBVR.log.prev next to Oblivion.exe. The .prev survives a restart and is usually the useful one.

Frame rate reports are welcome but expect a small hit: the world is rendered twice at full headset resolution.

Happy to answer anything.

And yes eventually I want to make this not just a VR mod but a VR port with swords, shields, bows, magic and grabbing stuff all in VR.
